3 Product Portfolio DELRIN acetal resins are made by the polymerisation of formaldehyde. They have built up a worldwide reputation for reliability in all types of engineering components over more than 30 years since DuPont discovered and introduced DELRIN. They are used in the automotive, appliance, sports, industrial engineering, electronics and consumer goods industries. The chemical composition and highly crystalline structure of DELRIN acetal offer a unique combination of properties not available with metal or other plastics. DELRIN characteristics include: High tensile strength, impact resistance and stiffness; Outstanding fatigue resistance, unmatched by other plastics; Excellent resistance to moisture, gasoline, lubricants, solvents and many other neutral chemicals; Excellent dimensional stability; Good electrical insulating characteristics; Creep resistance; Low friction; Wide end-use temperature range, down to very low temperatures. We do not recommend using DELRIN in strong acids or bases outside the range of ph 4 to 9, or under constant exposure to pressurised hot water or vapour. DELRIN should also not be used in medical applications involving permanent implantation in the human body. The data in the attached tables represent an important basis for material selection for engineering applications. They can, however, not replace tests with the final part. Your DuPont representative is ready to give you more detailed design support if required. DELRIN P DELRIN P resins were introduced in 1992 to offer an advanced generation of easy processing resins. They are formulated to increase the processing window of acetals in demanding and critical hardware environments (e.g. hot runner tools) and to offer outstanding thermal stability in injection operations. The stabilizer concept of DELRIN P was developed to obtain the best balance of thermal and oxidative stability, good flow properties, thermal stability of coloured resins and chemical resistance. More importantly, it maintains the classic advantage of acetal over copolymer in physical properties. Therefore, DELRIN P offers more freedom in application engineering and a wider operating window in injection. Due to the excellent thermal stability of DELRIN P, the key advantages for the moulder are deposit free, higher stability of coloured products, as well as more regrind passes. 1

4 DELRIN ELEVEN The family of DELRIN ELEVEN Series has been developed as an extension to the range of DELRIN P resins. These new formulations include the same proprietary thermal stabilizers as the DELRIN P resins. Therefore the outstanding ease of processing of DELRIN P is maintained with the new DELRIN ELEVEN Series. In what way is the new ELEVEN Series different from current DELRIN resins? There are several important improvements: Firstly, they are more crystalline than other DELRIN grades, so there is less warpage and greater out-of-the-mould dimensional stability. Secondly, the problem of hidden voids has been virtually eliminated, so you can design parts with just the thickness needed for the function, without overcompensating for possible weak spots. Thirdly, the DELRIN ELEVEN Series are even more stable in the presence of hydrocarbons, able to withstand prolonged immersion in fuels and oils, making them ideal for automotive and other fuel system applications. Swelling of DELRIN ELEVEN in fuel Injection-moulded samples of different acetal resins were immersed in fuel CM-15 (15% methanol + 85% fuel C, where fuel C is 50% toluene + 50% iso-octane) for 500 hours at 60 C. The length, weight and tensile properties of the samples, as measured before and after immersion, are shown in Fig. 1. In all cases, some fuel molecules are absorbed in the sample and act as a plasticiser: the stress at yield is slightly reduced and the elongation at yield is approximately doubled. Parts made of DELRIN 511P, after immersion, remain stronger than the copolymer parts are before immersion. 4,0 weight length 75 Effect of immersion on yield point 3,5 DELRIN 511P 3,0 2, Other acetals 2,0 Change of weight or length (%) 1,5 1,0 0,5 0,0 DELRIN 511P other acetals Stress at yield (MPa) Strain at yield (%) Fig. 1 Change of weight (blue bar) and dimension (yellow bar), and change of yield point upon immersion in fuel CM-15, 500 h at 60 C; fuel absorbed in the sample acts as a plasticizer 2

5 Colours Fully compounded custom colours are available for most of the DELRIN products at a minimum order quantity of 1000 kg. All coloured DELRIN resins are free of heavy metals. Compared with masterbatch colouring, fully compounded colours give the best possible overall offering of coloured resin due to careful pigment selection. Accurate metering and uniform pigment dispersion during the production process guarantee consistent colour quality and optimal physical properties of the moulded part, thus avoiding colour variations and part failures which may occur with the use of masterbatches. Mould temperatures of 80 to 100 C are required for adequate and even crystallisation and best long term part performance. In specific cases, even higher mould temperatures may be required. Please contact your local DuPont representative for further and more detailed information. Packaging DELRIN is packaged in strong, environmentally friendly polyethylene 25 kg bags or 1000 kg octatainers. As a consequence of its enhanced stability, DELRIN P has a better colourability and allows for the use of a wider range of pigments. Coloured resins may show slightly different properties compared to natural resins, especially for crystallinity and shrinkage. In some cases, such effects can be minimised by appropriate pigment selection. Processing DELRIN can be processed in standard injection or extrusion processes. Depending on machine design and resin type, blow is also possible. For injection of DELRIN, we recommend high compression screws in order to achieve the best possible melt homogeneity. The key parameters for precision are: melt temperature; injection pressure; hold pressure time; mould temperature. Barrel temperatures should be selected to achieve a melt temperature of 210 to 220 C. The nozzle temperature and the hot runner temperature should be set at maximum 190 C. The additive package of DELRIN P reduces shear sensitivity and allows for fast injection speeds. It is recommended to avoid pressure peaks at the end of the injection phase. Depending on the particular grade and mould design, hold pressures of 70 to 100 MPa (specific) should be selected. To achieve optimal mechanical properties and dimensional stability of the finished parts, hold pressure time should be 8 s per mm wall thickness. This is applicable at thicknesses of approximately 1 to 3 mm. Compositions DELRIN, DELRIN P and DELRIN ELEVEN Series are available in high, medium, low and very low viscosity with 100 being the most viscous and 1700P the most fluid. DELRIN is also available in a range of other compositions offering properties to meet the requirements for many specific end-use applications. 3
