2 FILM EXTRUSION MATERIALS Linear Low-Density Polyethylene DFDC-7087 Natural 7 DESCRIPTION DFDC-7087 Natural 7 is a slip, antiblock and antioxidant modified, low melt index, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) resin for tubular blown film extrusion. It is produced using Union Carbide s UNIPOL PE Process and is supplied in pelleted form. Films extruded from DFDC-7087 Natural 7 have good toughness, high tensile strength and elongation, and outstanding puncture strength. The product offers excellent drawdown capability. APPLICATIONS DFDC-7087 Natural 7 is recommended for the manufacture of thin gauge liner film, garment bag and other industrial and consumer packaging applications requiring toughness and puncture resistance. 3 TEST METHODS Designated tests are made in accordance with ASTM Standard Testing Methods. These are available from the American Society for Testing and Materials, Philadelphia, PA upon request. EXTRUSION CONDITIONS DFDC-7087 Natural 7 is readily extrudable by conventional film extrusion equipment, with only minor machine modifications necessary for optimum use. A good balance of film properties is achieved at blow-up ratios of between 2:1 and 3:1. The product can be readily drawn down to gauges of less than 1 mil (25 microns). Suggested melt extrusion temperature range is F ( C). STORAGE AND HANDLING DFDC-7087 Natural 7 is supplied in pelleted form. This material may be readily conveyed and bulk-fed through equipment designed for conventional pelleted polyethylene resin, provided appropriate equipment modifications are made to prevent accumulation of the fines and dust particles that are contained in all polyethylene resins. These fines and dust particles can, under certain conditions, pose an explosion hazard. We recommend that the conveying system used be: (1) equipped with filters of adequate size, (2) operated and maintained in such a manner to ensure that no leaks develop, and (3) grounded adequately. We further recommend that good housekeeping be practiced throughout your facility. AVAILABILITY DFDC-7087 Natural 7 is available in bulk hopper cars, bulk hopper trucks, and bulk cartons. The product type and lot number are clearly marked on each container. Contact the Union Carbide sales office nearest you for availability in your area. FDA STATUS The resin content of Union Carbide DFDC-7087 Natural 7 polyethylene complies with Food Additive Regulation 21 CFR for Olefin Polymers par(c) 3.2a. The additives present are sanctioned by appropriate Food Additive Regulations. Please note that the FDA clearance for an additive present in this product requires that the polyethylene be used in film form only for food contact applications. It follows that DFDC-7087 Natural 7 may be used legally in all film-form food packaging applications, including holding food during cooking. 2 of 4
