Agenda What is Magnesium Chloride and how is it produced? What is Dust Control? What is Gravel Stabilization? Why use DustGard Magnesium Chloride?

After Dust Control Application

What is DustGard Magnesium Chloride and How is it Produced?

Magnesium Chloride Magnesium Chloride is a molecule that is formed when 2 chloride ions bond to a magnesium ion creating a molecule with a +2 positive charge.

Magnesium Chloride The magnesium chloride used in DustGard is a naturally occurring chemical formed in the waters of Utah s Great Salt Lake

Magnesium Chloride Water is pumped from the Great Salt Lake into holding ponds where it is evaporated by solar power. Once the water reaches a certain density the sodium chloride/salt falls out. The liquid is pumped to a different pond and left to evaporate. Up to 100,000 gallons are evaporated per day in the summer.

Magnesium Chloride The liquid is left to evaporate once again until North American Salt is able to harvest Potassium of Potash, a high grade fertilizer.

Magnesium Chloride The leftover liquid is Magnesium Chloride, a naturally occurring chemical created with an almost zero carbon footprint.

How does DustGard Work?

How does DustGard Work? To understand how DustGard Works lets look and the processes and materials involved: How does DustGard work? What is Dust Control Why and How What road base stabilization Why and How

DustGard Magnesium Chloride DustGard Magnesium Chloride is a +2 positively charge molecule that is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts water.

DustGard Magnesium Chloride DustGard Magnesium Chloride is shipped in liquid form with 30% solids by railcar to one of our locations where it is stored in our tanks awaiting delivery or application for Dust Control and Gravel Stabilization.

DustGard Magnesium Chloride DustGard Magnesium Chloride works in 2 ways. First, being hygroscopic, DustGard will attract water to the road surface keeping dust down and fines in the road.

DustGard Magnesium Chloride Clay particles when worked have a positive charge on the ends and a negative charge on the flat sections. DustGard magnesium Chloride is a +2 charge and will create an ionic bond between clay particles and the aggregate in your road or parking surface.

What is Dust Control? Dust Control is the application of DustGard Magnesium Chloride to native soil area specifically to control dust and decrease watering. Application rate should be 0.3 to 0.5 gallons per square yard for the initial applications and then 0.25 to 0.3 for subsequent applications. Can be done by a water truck or distributor. The hygroscopic quality of DustGard will keep moisture in the surface and keep dust controlled. Dryer areas will have to continue sporadic watering to help keep the DustGard refreshed.

Why and where? Dust Control can be very effective for the following: Dirt Parking Lots Temporary Construction Sites Dust Control can Save money by reducing watering Reduce dust creating a safer environment for employees. Help eliminate fines and investigations resulting from PM10 non compliance.

Stabilization DustGard is very effective when used for gravel surface stabilization. Gravel Stabilization is the process where DustGard is applied at.5 Gallons per square yard to a gravel base course designed specifically for gravel roads. Process is intended to decrease the loss of aggregate, fines and time spent maintaining the road. Process is usually done on a yearly basis depending on the type and amount of traffic on the treated surface. Can be done on roads and parking areas.

Stabilization When considering stabilizations the following must be considered: Type of base course available. Must be graded, crushed with high plasticity. How much traffic and what kind of traffic Tools available to maintain the surface.

WARNING! CRUSHED LIMESTONE IS NOT A KNOWN HEALTH HAZARD. HOWEVER CRUSHED LIMESTONE MAY BE SUBJECTED TO VARIOUS NATURAL OR MECHANICAL FORCES THAT PRODUCE SMALL PARTICLES (DUST), WHICH MAY CONTAIN RESPIRABLE CRYSTALLINE SILICA (PARTICLES LESS THAN 10 MICROMETERS IN AERODYNAMIC DIAMETER).REPEATED INHALATION OF RESPIRABLE CRYSTALLINE SILICA (QUARTZ) MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO LUNGS THROUGH PROLONGED OR REPEATED EXPOSURE AND MAY CAUSE LUNG CANCER. Carcinogen, Acute & Chronic Toxin Warning: This product contains greater than 0.1% crystalline silica. Crystalline silica has been linked to cancer, silicosis, and other lung problems in conditions of prolonged airborne overexposure. Repeated inhalation of respirable crystalline silica (quartz) may cause lung cancer according to IARC and NTP; ACGIH states that it is a suspected cause of cancer. Other forms of RCS (e.g. Tridymite and Cristobalite) may also be present or formed under certain industrial processes. Carcinogen- Acute & Chronic. Product contains crystalline silica quartz. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies respirable crystalline silica as Group I Known Human Carcinogen. SEPTEMBER , 2018

Best case application Grade to fill holes Pre-water prior to application. Use surfactant if surface is tight or has surface tension..25 gallon per square yard (minimum) or.5 gallon per square yard application (normal road/conditions) Delivered in computerized spray trucks, driver has read-out of application rate. Applied at.25 gal/sq, yd. applications to prevent run off. Approximately 4500 gallons per truck load. Length x width or square feet/yards gals=.65 of mile x 24 ft wide at.5 gal/sy or 1.3 miles x 24 wide at.25 gal/sy gals= will cover 81,000 square feet at.5 gal/sy or 162,000 sq feet at.25 gal/sy. 30

Things to consider. How long do you need the dust control to last? How much traffic? How much heavy machinery turning and stopping? How much rain? How heavy? How well was road prepped for application? Good gravel? Good mixture of small, medium and large pieces Good clay/binder? 10-15% works best. 31

When to apply 32

When to apply? 33

This is what we are trying to avoid 34

Because that leads to this!
