8 12 Michigan he state of Michigan is made up of two peninsulas. The T Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula, dubbed the mitten, face each other across Lake Michigan. The 5-mile Straits of Mackinac Toll Bridge link the peninsulas together. Three other Great Lakes, Superior, Huron and Erie, border Michigan. The French were settling into the area in the 1600 s. In 1641, Father Jacques Marquette, French missionary and explorer, founded a mission and trading post. Sault Ste. Marie was the first permanent European settlement in Michigan. Tribes of Ojibwa, Ottawa and Menoninee were still in the area. Detroit is the largest city. It was founded in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe. The city is famous today for its automobile industry. Other industries outside of Detroit include space, food processing and defense. Known as a vacation spot, Upper Peninsula is a beautiful land of lakes and forests, attracting campers, hikers and canoeists. Michigan is proud to be the Great Lakes State, proclaimed on their license plates. It has 3,121 miles of shoreline. There are 11,000 inland lakes and thousands of waterways. Although not known for agriculture, there are around 52,000 farms in Michigan. Most are located in the southern half of Lower Peninsula. They produce corn, winter wheat, soybeans, honey and flowers. Saginaw Valley produces sugar beets and dry beans. Other farms include milk, poultry and pigs. FUN FACTS Capital Lansing Area 56,804 sq. mi. Bordering Marquette County to the north is Lake Superior, on the east by Delta and Alger Counties, the south Dickinson and Menominee Counties, and to the west by Iron and Baraga Counties. Marquette County s original boundaries were drawn in 1843, but was not formally organized until The county s boundaries have been redrawn over nine times from 1843 to The county seat of Marquette was established in 1849, after a survey revealed massive iron ore deposits around the Teal Lake area. By the 1850 s, Marquette was home to several mining companies, railways, and became the major shipping center in Michigan s Upper Peninsula. Marquette County is the largest of Michigan's 83 counties, covering an area of 1,870 square miles. Lake County 13

14 How much House Can You Afford? How much you can afford is determined by a relatively simple formula. Lenders generally figure that no more than 28 percent of your income should be for total housing costs. In addition, they require that your total monthly debt be less than 36 percent of your income. (Note: These are general numbers. Other loan programs may allow higher percentages.) For example, if you make $48,000 a year, divided by 12 months, your monthly income is $4,000. (Remember, that s $48,000 in gross pay, before federal and state taxes are removed.) Twenty-eight percent of $4,000 is $1,120. That is the most you can make in a monthly mortgage, taxes, and insurance payments. Generally, to qualify, the self-employed buyer must have been self-employed in the same line of work for at least 24 months before applying for a loan. Lenders use your net income, the figure at the bottom of schedule C of your federal income tax form, to decide how large a mortgage you can carry. But they don t look at what you earn now or what you made last year. Rather lenders figure the monthly average of your income over the past 24 months. Also, overtime pay & bonuses sometimes may not be figured into your average income. Don t forget that points, closing costs & other out-of-the-pocket expenses probably will come out to about one percent of the mortgage amount
