1 .1 (1995) (Rev ) Approval of Welding Consumables for High Srengh Quenched and Tempered Seels for Welded Srucures 1. General 1.1 Scope These requiremens supplemens he UR W17 and give he condiions of approval and inspecion of welding consumables used for high srengh quenched and empered or TMCP seels for welded srucures according o UR W16 wih yield srengh levels from 420 N/mm 2 up o 690 N/mm 2 and impac grades A, D, E and F. Where no special requiremens are given, hose of UR W17 apply in analogous manner The welding consumables preferably o be used for he seels concerned are divided ino several caegories as follows : - covered elecrodes for manual welding, - wire-flux combinaions for mulirun*) submerged arc welding, - solid wire-gas combinaions for arc welding (including rods for gas ungsen arc welding), - flux cored wire wih or wihou gas for arc welding. 1.2 Grading, Designaion Based on he yield srengh of he weld meal, he welding consumables concerned are divided ino six (yield) srengh groups : - Y42 - for welding seels wih minimum yield srengh 420 N/mm 2 - Y46 - for welding seels wih minimum yield srengh 460 N/mm 2 - Y50 - for welding seels wih minimum yield srengh 500 N/mm 2 - Y55 - for welding seels wih minimum yield srengh 550 N/mm 2 - Y62 - for welding seels wih minimum yield srengh 620 N/mm 2 - Y69 - for welding seels wih minimum yield srengh 690 N/mm 2 *) Wire-flux combinaions for single or wo-run echnique are subjec o special consideraion of he Classificaion Sociey Each of he six (yield) srengh groups is furher divided ino hree main grades in respec of charpy V-noch impac es requiremens (es emperaures): - Grade 3, es emperaure -20 o C - Grade 4, es emperaure -40 o C - Grade 5, es emperaure -60 o C Analagously o he designaion scheme used in UR W17 he welding consumables for high srengh quenched and empered seels are subjec o classificaion designaion and approval as follows:

2 According o wih he qualiy grades 3,4 or 5 - Wih he added symbol Y and an appended code number designaing he minimum yield srengh of he weld meal corresponding 1.2.1: Y42, Y46, Y50, Y55, Y62 and Y69. - Wih he added symbol H10 (HH) or H5 (HHH) for conrolled hydrogen conen of he weld meal, - Wih he added symbol S (= semi-auomaic) for semi-mechanised welding, - Wih he added symbol M designaing mulirun echnique *) (and is applicable only o welding consumables for fully mechanised welding), *) see foonoe on page Each higher qualiy grade includes he one (or hose) below Grade A... and D... seels acc. o UR W16 are o be welded using welding consumables of a leas qualiy grade 3, grade E... seels using a leas qualiy grade 4 and grade F... seels using a leas qualiy grade 5., see he following able : Consumable Grade 3Y.. 4Y.. 5Y.. Seel Grades covered D.. and A.. E..,D.. and A.. F..,E..,D.. and A.. Welding consumables approved wih grades..y42,..y46 and..y50 are also considered suiable for welding seels in he wo srengh levels below ha for which hey have been approved. Welding consumables approved wih grades..y55,..y62 and..y69 are also considered suiable for welding seels in he srengh level below ha for which hey have been approved. The Sociey may, in individual cases, resric he range of applicaion in (up o) such a way, ha approval for any one srengh level does no jusify approval for any oher srengh level. 1.3 Manufacure, esing and approval procedure Manufacurer s plan, producion mehods and qualiy conrol measures shall be such as o ensure reasonable uniformiy in manufacure, see also UR W Tesing and approval procedure shall be in accordance wih UR W17, secions 2 and 3 and as required in UR W17 for he individual caegories (ypes) of welding consumables menioned in above. 2. Tesing of he weld meal 2.1 For esing he deposied weld meal, es pieces analogous o hose called for in UR W17, secions 4.2, 5.2, 6.2 or 6.3 respecively shall be prepared, depending on he ype of he welding consumables (and according o he welding process). he base meal used shall be a fine-grained srucural seel compaible wih he properies of he weld meal, or he side walls of he weld shall be buered wih a weld meal of he same composiion.

3 The chemical composiion of he deposied weld meal shall be deermined and cerified in a manner analogous o ha prescribed in UR W17, secion The resuls of he analysis shall no exceed he limi values specified in he sandards or by he manufacurer, he narrower olerances being applicable in each case. 2.3 Depending on he ype of he welding consumables (and according o he welding process), he es specimens prescribed in UR W17, secions 3.1 and 4.2, 5.2, 6.2 or 6.3 respecively shall be aken from he weld meal es pieces in a similar manner. 2.4 The mechanical properies mus mee he requiremens saed in Tables 1 and 2. The provisions of UR W17 apply in analogous manner o he performance of he ess, including in paricular he mainenance of he es emperaure in he noched bar impac es and he carrying ou of resuls. The elongaion is o be saed in he es repor. Noe: For welding very large plae hicknesses where he supporing effec of he base maerial on eiher side of he weld no longer applies and he ensile srengh of he weld meal also deermines he ensile srengh of he welded join, i may be necessary, when applying foonoe 1), o choose welding consumables of he nex higher srengh caegory (nex higher added Symbol).

4 .3 3. Tesing on welded joins 3.1 Depending on he ype of he welding consumables (and according o he welding process), he esing on he welded joins shall be performed on bu-weld es pieces in analogous manner o UR W17, secions 4.3, 5.2, 6.2, 6.3, or 6.4 respecively. 3.2 Depending on he ype of he welding consumables (and according o he welding process), he bu-weld es pieces called for in para. 3.1 shall be welded in a manner analogous o ha prescribed in UR W17. The base meal used shall be a high-srengh fine-grained srucural seel wih an appropriae minimum yield srengh and ensile srengh and compaible wih he added symbol for which applicaion is made. 3.3 Depending on he ype of he welding consumables (and according o he welding process), he es specimens described in UR W17 shall be aken from he bu-weld es pieces. 3.4 The mechanical properies mus mee he requiremens saed in Table 3.
