How to Select & Order the Right Band Saw Machine Use the chart on page 5 as a guide to select the right saw for typical sawing applications. Consider the following conditions in making your choice. High vs. Low Production. In high production applications (6 or more hours per shift or high cutting rates) a heavy duty saw, wide band, and more horsepower provide greater productivity and reliability. Design Capacity vs. Effective Capacity. A saw is most effective in materials from 1/3 to 2/3 of the rated size capacity. Using a 12" capacity saw is not ideal for cutting 12" solids all day. Exotic Materials vs. Mild Materials. Hard-to-cut materials, like Inconel and 316 stainless, are best cut with heavy duty machines and wide blades. Bundle Cutting vs. Two-at-a-Time. Bundle cutting is good when cutting long bundles into short bundles because it eliminates the need to break and re-strap the bundles. Cutting material two-at-a-time is often faster than bundle cutting. It also eliminates the potential of bars spinning and can be done on a smaller, less expensive machine. Standard Machine vs. Custom. Some applications benefit from unique saws or handling systems that accommodate unusual materials, enhance safety, or boost productivity. If a standard machine just doesn t seem to fit, ask about DoALL s custom sawing and solutions. Budget Constraint vs. The Right Machine. Purchasing a less expensive machine may fall within your budgetary constraints, but not selecting the right machine may cost you in lost production. 10 How to Select & Order a Band Saw Blade Selecting the Right Blade Step 1. Choose a Blade Style. Use the table below to select a blade style for the material(s) you are cutting. The table gives the page number where each blade style is detailed. Step 2. Determine a Blade Pitch. Use the Bi-Metal or Tungsten Carbide blade pitch table on the next page to determine the correct pitch for the size of your work. Step 3. Determine a Blade Width. Most machines accept only one blade width. For contour sawing, choose the widest blade that can cut the smallest work radius. Once you have made these choices, turn to the blade style page and find the catalog number for your blade. Pg. 11 Ordering the Right Blade The part number you will use in ordering is a combination of the catalog number and three numbers that indicate the blade length, as explained below. To order welded bands, attach the band length in inches to the end of the catalog number. Example: If you want a 180 inch welded band of catalog number , order part number (For bands 99 inches or shorter, lead with a zero. For example, to order a 93-inch welded band of catalog number , order part number ) To order a coil of blade, attach the ordering code from the table below to the end of the catalog number. (Check the blade style page for available coil lengths.) Coil Length: 100 ft (30m) 150 ft (46m) 250 ft (76m) 300 ft (91m) 500 ft (152m) Ordering Code: Example: If you want a 150 foot coil of catalog number , order part number Blade Pitch For best results, a minimum of 3 teeth and maximum of 24 teeth should be in contact with the workpiece at any given time. Determining the proper pitch is based on the length of this contact. For solids, this length is determined by measuring the diameter of a round or the side of a rectangle. For tubing, use two to three times the wall thickness. For structurals, use the contact length through most of the cut. Find this length in the appropriate table below. The primary pitch recommendation is in the thicker section directly above or below that length. The secondary recommendation is in the thinner section. Example: To cut 5-inch work using a bi-metal blade, 3-4 pitch is the primary recommendation. 2-3 pitch is the secondary recommendation. When using a refractometer for metalworking fluids, it is the coolant concentration that causes light to refract. Properly maintaining coolant concentrations will assist in preventing the disruption in production due to cleanouts and costly disposals. This will result in less coolant waste, protection of the tool and the machine and better cutting results. It will also help avoid the alkalinity reserve that may cause rusting and the encouragement of bacteria.
