6 HISTORY OF THE HERD In 1940, Harry Smalley, of Mosca, Colorado, began raising registered Angus, while still running a well drilling and threshing business. He ventured into Angus at a time when Hereford s were the choice of breed. He continued to grow his herd with the help of his son, Harvey. In 1965, after years of hard work, Harry turned the business (Smalley s Angus Ranch) over to Harvey. Realizing there weren t many Angus in the San Luis Valley, Harvey found it hard to find good Angus bulls to grow his herd with. That s where he found artificial insemination, and realized he was able to improve his cattle program which is exactly what Harvey has always put first. Year after year, he has developed pathfinder cows. Through the help of his wife, Sandy, and three girls (Kim, Tandi, and Skeeter), Harvey was also able to provide quality Angus bulls. He prides himself on what you see is what you get! never fattening or pushing his bulls. This has insured great performance from the bulls for his buyers. In July of 2014, Harvey and Sandy decided to hang their hats and retire. After so many years of hard work, they knew that they wanted to find someone to take over who had the same passion and drive that they have always had. They hand-picked us, Jeremy & Melissa Faucette, to do the job! Today, Harvey and Sandy are still much involved in the operations of Cattle Mountain Ranch. Harvey and Jeremy work closely in all decisions involving the cattle, and it s been such a blessing to continue to have their guidance, knowledge, and support. We couldn t ask for better friends! It is with pleasure that we are introducing the new owners of our Registered Black Angus Cattle Ranch [Smalley s Angus Ranch]. Jeremy and Melissa Faucette absolutely plan to keep the Black Angus herd registered and to the strong standards we have strived to achieve. And we will still be very involved in this cattle operation. To Our Loyal Buyers: You started out as a bull or heifer buyer of Smalley s Angus Ranch. Now it is an honor to have you as a good friend as well. Great memories have been made in the bull pens! - Harvey & Sandy Smalley Smalley s Angus Ranch, Owners A huge THANK YOU to The Smalley Family Particularly Harvey and Sandy for their MANY years of dedicating themselves to providing outstanding cattle. 7 Look for the yellow star to see our Leaders in Low PAP Scores!! PAP Testing What is PAP Scores and why is it important in the productivity of your herd? Bovine high-mountain disease (BHMD), also known as Brisket, can be a deadly disease that cattle, who reside in higher altitudes, can suffer and die from. One of the best ways to control BHMD in your herds is through pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) testing. The test is best performed, and will be most accurate, when cattle have resided at higher elevation (over 6,000 feet) for an extended period of time. Smalley s Angus Ranch has been doing this test with Dr. Timothy N. Holt, DVM, since 1980 (so we are very confident in the good genetics and consistent testing of our herd!). On February 12, 2017, Dr. Holt came and PAP tested our bulls. Dr. Holt has classified PAP tests of as being normal, or low. Bulls with scores ranging in those numbers are likely to be good breeding stock for high altitude herds as well as maintaining an acceptable PAP at high altitude. Bulls with a 43 were considered low to moderate. Bulls with score have a moderate chance. Any bulls testing 50 and higher were culled out of this set of bulls to provide you with good genetics for future breeding. February 12, 2017 PAP testing with Dr. Tim Holt 7
