Oiling timber decks

What are the benefits of oiling a timber deck? ü Stops the timber from splintering ü Prevents the timber from rot and decay ü Looks great ü Adds value ü Increases the life of the deck ü Resists dirt and mould

What's the difference between a stain and an oil? ü Stains..Decking stains have a higher level of pigmentation that will bring back colour to grey and faded timber. Stains will generally last longer than an oil, require less maintenance, but may obscure the timber grain. ü Oils..Decking oils are lightly pigmented and designed for use on new timber or timber which still retains it colour. The oil highlights the natural look and grain of the timber without obscuring the timber grain.

Does it matter what species of timber a deck is to achieve the colour I want? Yes... ü The natural colour of the timber will dictate what the final colour and appearance of the timber will look like. An oil will look very different if applied to pine than it will if applied to kwila. ü For best results use an off cut of the timber or coat an area that will not be noticeable to see what the timber will look like when coated. ü Make sure to apply 2 coats of the oil on your sample area. Applying only 1 coat may not give you the true final colour. Pine Kwila

What preparation is required? ü New Timber should be left to weather for 4-6 weeks to allow the pores of the timber to open up. ü All decks wether new or existing should be cleaned using Cabot s Deck Clean or Intergrain Reviva to remove mould, mildew, grey fibres, tannin stains, dirt and grease. Failure to remove the mould and mildew will result in the mould erupting through the coating and causing blistering & peeling. Grey fibres are an unsound surface and will likely shed from the surface when coated. These grey fibres should be removed.

What preparation is required? After ü Mix Cabots Deck Clean 1-1 with water or Intergrain Reviva 4-1 with water. ü Apply to deck with knap sack sprayer. For best results allow to stay wet for minutes. Scrubbing may be required, use a stiff bristled broom to remove heavy degradation or lichen. ü Rinse thoroughly with water to remove debris.

The Water bead test..after cleaning ü Using a hand held plastic spray bottle, lightly spray water onto the timber surface. ü If the water soaks into the timber relatively quickly, the surface is suitable for coating. ü If the water beads on the surface, the timber requires further cleaning or weathering before it can be coated.

How do I apply the oil? Product Description Use on: Long pile lambs wool sock For application of exterior decking oil Optimum pick up & release Assists in achieving an even finish Outdoor timber decking

What if I have previously used an oil based product can I swap to a water based oil or vice versa? YES..but follow these steps ü Allow the deck to weather. ü Scrub the deck thoroughly with Cabot s Deck Clean. ü Apply the water bead test to the timber surface if the water beads on the surface then the next coat will not penetrate the timber. ü Repeat the cleaning process if needed Stains and oils do not expand and contract like acrylic paints do so it is usually safe to mix the systems. As long as you follow the above steps.

Here s some handy tips to get a great result. ü Always stir before using and during to ensure coating pigment is evenly dispersed, giving an even colour. ü Brush to coat the edges and end grain and a decking applicator for everything else. Apply the product liberally along the entire length of the timber board. Aim to coat 2 or 3 boards at a time while maintaining a wet edge to avoid lap marks and double coating. Any excess stain build-up can be removed by back-brushing. ü Do not apply if rain or dew is expected within 4 hours of application
