2 POSITION DESCRIPTION Carpenter Context Lincoln University is New Zealand s specialist, land-based University with a proud tradition as New Zealand s third oldest tertiary institution, founded in 1878 as a School of Agriculture. Today it is a research-led institution with an emphasis on land-based disciplines and their associated industries - agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, bio-technology, environmental science, environmental management, tourism, landscape architecture, sport & recreation and commerce. Lincoln University has three (3) Academic Faculties, two (2) Research Centres, two (2) Divisions and sixteen (16) Corporate Service Units, and draws its students from throughout New Zealand and from over 60 countries. The University has a student roll of around 3,500 and approximately 700 staff. Lincoln University is an EEO employer and actively seeks to meet its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi. The Services Section has a staff of 8 qualified tradespersons and is responsible for the maintenance of the University buildings and equipment, provision of engineering and energy service, and maintaining teaching and research equipment. The Services Section carries out its duties under the direction of the Trades and Services Manager using University trades staff, letting contracts or negotiating specific works. All planned maintenance work is programmed for the most cost effective results. Purpose The position of Carpenter is within the Services Section of the Lincworks Property Services Group. Lincworks Property Services is responsible for the management and maintenance of all campus property. This position has a strong emphasis on the maintenance of student accommodation areas and associated social spaces. Key Outputs General To maintain an ongoing programme of work that is effective and provides high safety standards and low down-time. To ensure Building Warrant of Fitness requirements are met and procedures followed. To assist in maintaining an ongoing stock of specialised spare parts. To fulfil all Job Requests so that they meet customer expectations and costs as to quality of work and timing. Be committed to maintaining all University property and space to a high standard. Complete all work efficiently and effectively. That all work records are completed for charging out by the end of the day. To improve customer/client satisfaction with the Services Section performance. Key Performance Indicators The annual objectives set down have been completed on time, within budget and customer satisfaction has been achieved. Building Warrant of Fitness log books are maintained and up to date. Spare parts are available at all times. Work allocated is completed to specified quality standards and timeliness and to the satisfaction of clients. University property is left clean and tidy. Work is performed safely and with due care. Time & cost records are prepared correctly for each job. The most efficient and effective means of carrying out the work has been implemented of each job All training requirements met. 2

3 Key Outputs Attend training courses relevant to the job. Health & Safety To become familiar, and comply, with all H&S policies and procedures. To comply with all Lincoln University legislative requirements in respect of occupational H&S. To report any hazard that has come to your attention. To wear protective clothing/apparatus as required. Treaty of Waitangi Support the University to meet its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi. Other Such other duties and re-arrangement of responsibilities as may be reasonably required. Provide support to other trades in an emergency call-out situation if available. Comply with all legal and University requirements in respect of the administration and management of all university records. Key Performance Indicators All Lincoln University H&S policies and procedures are complied with. All Lincoln University legislative requirements in respect of occupational health and safety are complied with. The employer is notified of any hazard that has come to the employee s attention in the course of their employment. Protective clothing/apparatus are used where procedures or common sense would warrant this. Demonstrates, and encourages others to demonstrate, support for the University s commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi. Support to Lincworks and Lincoln University. All legal and University requirements are complied with in respect of the administration and management of all university records. Staff Supervised The Carpenters is not responsible for the supervision of staff. Key Relationships The Carpenter will be expected to establish effective relationships with all University staff, particularly members of Lincworks Property Services, other tradespersons and private contractors, equipment suppliers and service personnel. Accountability The Carpenter reports to the Carpenters Co-ordinator. 3

4 Person Specification Qualifications The Carpenters must have successfully completed an apprenticeship in the Carpentry industry. Experience The position requires: Highly developed supervisory skills Well developed organisational and planning skills Experience and competency in all aspects of Carpentry work Problem solving Technical Skills Basic computer skills would be an advantage Personal Attributes Familiarity with all aspects of the trade. Be a self-starter with a strong sense of objective and the ability to work effectively even when under pressure. The ability to understand directions, plan and prioritise daily tasks. Be capable, enthusiastic and interested in training and development. Be physically able to undertake all types of work, including height (ladder, scaffolding and cherry picker) and confined space work, etc The ability to work individually and as an effective team member. Have a cost-conscious approach to work. To have the ability to work harmoniously as part of a team Be pro-active in terms of health and safety work practises. Have the ability to establish good customer relationships and interact effectively with a diverse range of people of different age groups and from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. Be flexible and have the ability to work in an environment with changing priorities. Ability to work within the LU policies and procedures and promote a harmonious working environment. 4

5 CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT SERVICES STAFF Term of Appointment This is a continuing appointment. Hours of Work This is a full time appointment of 40 hours per week. Remuneration Salary on commencement will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Employment Agreement If the appointee chooses to become a union member, the appointee will be bound by the Lincoln University Services Staff Collective Employment Agreement. It contains a comprehensive range of conditions of employment for this position. Otherwise the appointee will have an Individual Employment Agreement based on the Lincoln University Services Staff Collective Employment Agreement. Annual Leave Annual leave entitlement is five weeks per annum. You are also entitled to statutory holidays in accordance with the Holidays Act. In addition, you are entitled to the last working day before Christmas Day, the three working days between Christmas and New Year, and Easter Tuesday, as University holidays, in accordance with the Lincoln University Services Staff Collective Employment Agreement. Health and Safety The appointee will work and act at all times in compliance with all Lincoln University requirements in respect of occupational health and safety. University staff can join the Recreation Centre on campus. The Centre offers a wide range of facilities and services, for example: gymnasium, weights room, exercise classes, fitness assessments, massage, and squash courts.
