Mindset: The view you take about yourself Carol Dweck: Mindset, The New Psychology of Success Fixed Mindset I can t change, it s too hard. Change should be quick, easy and require little effort. Change is all or nothing. Failure means I m a failure or it s someone else s fault. I should be able to do it by myself. Growth Mindset I can do hard things. Change comes from practice lots of it! Change comes from small steps. Failure is how I learn. I can ask for help & support.

Growth-mindset is a buffer against defeatism. It reframes failure as a natural part of the change process. And that s critical because people will persevere only if they perceive falling down as learning rather than as failing. Carol Dweck

Helping people live the healthiest lives possible. Let s teach them the SKILLS of HOW to change with realistic, growth mindset messages and methods. When people experience success, no matter what the size or the action, they will feel hopeful and empowered to continue to try to move forward. Success creates courage, persistence, confidence and achievement.

Five Simple Steps to Practice

Step 1. Be a positive influencer. Circle of Direct Control Circle of Influence Circle of Concern (No Direct Control)

Build a non-judgmental relationship with your patient. Create a safe relationship where the patient can share success and failures. Do I believe this patient is whole, resourceful, capable, creative? Do I believe he/she is ultimately the expert on what will work for her/him? Do I believe I am a partner, not the boss? Do I believe I am doing this with them, not to them or for them?

Communicate Growth Mindset Messages I believe you can make these changes. You can do hard things. You are capable, resourceful and creative. Adopting healthy behaviors takes time, patience, and practice with many experiments to find what works for you and your family. As long as you learn and don t give up, you can t fail. We re here to help and support you.

Step 2: Focus on what they already want to do. Be REALISTIC about your ability to MOTIVATE. Facts and education are typically not enough to motivate people to change because motivation isn t rational. Ask: What change are you ready to focus on? Be careful to not pick something that you should do but rather what you genuinely have interest and energy to focus on right now.

Step 3: Help them create a realistic experiment. Pick a small step that s doable. Set a start date and an evaluation date with the intention of finding what will work for them through a series of experiments. Examples: Eat one banana at breakfast during the workday. Go for a family walk after dinner around the block before watching television on Mondays. Replace buying a gallon of ice cream with a pint of ice cream this week. **The harder the step, the more motivation is required. If there is lower motivation, make the step even easier.

Step 4: Help them identify a prompt. When, during the natural course of the day, will the person do this behavior? What will prompt (or remind) them to do the behavior? Are there prompts that could be removed that may get in the way of doing the behavior?

Step 5: Frame Failure as Opportunity to Learn All experts were once beginners. When we re trying new things in our lives, it requires trial and error to find what works for us in our unique situations. What will you tell yourself when something doesn t work for you or you feel like you ve failed? Let me share an example.

Use YOUR growth mindset to try Steps 1-5! 1. Be a positive influencer. 2. Focus on what they already want to do. 3. Help them create a realistic experiment. 4. Help them identify a prompt. 5. Frame failure as an opportunity to learn. Don t be afraid to fail. Be afraid not to try.
