Almost two thirds have a disability and one third rely on others for help, making stroke one of the biggest causes of disability. We are continually working to improve the lives of stroke survivors and their families who deserve the very best treatment and care. We deliver amazing, life-changing support to over 60,000 stroke survivors and their families each year. We also fund research to find better treatments, campaign for better stroke care and help people understand how to spot and prevent stroke. This work is made possible by more than 4,000 talented volunteers and staff, our fantastic supporters and our strong relationships with the stroke clinical and research community. 2 Directorate The Stroke Support Directorate is the largest Directorate within the charity. It plays a vital role in delivering high quality support to stroke survivors across the UK. The multi-disciplinary Senior Management Team in Wales work closely with colleagues across the UK in the Marketing and External Affairs,Strategy and Research and Income Generation Directorates to deliver the charity s vision of a world where there are fewer strokes and all those touched by stroke receive the support that they need. Purpose of role Every Stroke Association role is designed to contribute towards achieving our strategic ambitions. The particular focus of this role is to help us to achieve Ambition 2: Advocating for Best Care and Support. To help achieve this the role involves leading in the design and implementation of an External Communications programme for Wales. This will champion our work through the development of influential relationships with policy makers who can help us realise our ambition for better support for stroke survivors. Establishing positive relationships with journalists in Wales and securing media coverage for local and organisational priorities is also a key feature of the role. The post holder will working closely with the central Marketing and External Affairs Directorate including attendance at its team meetings to ensure integrated approaches to the charity s work in Wales and Nationally.

3 Key responsibilities of role Responsibility Area Performance Indicators Key Competencies and Strategic Planning As part of the senior Management Team in Wales support the Director Cymru and colleagues in Wales in developing and shaping effective business planning and delivery plans for Wales. To lead on the planning,design and implementation of an effective external Communications Programme for Wales,collaborating on work streams with senior colleagues in Wales and relevant colleagues in the central Marketing and External Affairs Team. (MEA Team). To contribute to wider organisational and cross departmental policy and programme development and Project groups and attend SMT Wales and team meetings within the MEA Directorate to ensure integrated approaches to communication and influencing work that align with national priorities. 6 Responsibility Area Performance Indicators Key Competencies Campaigning To lead on the development, project management and delivery of high profile Wales-specific campaigns and on the implementation of UK campaigns ensuring these are delivered to plan. Ensure the experiences and views of stroke survivors are explored in sourcing evidence and information to use in developing our campaigning work at local and national level and creating an environment that encourages the participation of Stroke Association Voluntary Groups, affiliated Stroke Clubs and individuals affected by stroke in local and national campaigns. As a passionate and effective representative of the charity ensure the Stroke Association in Wales contributes to national Third sector campaigning networks, alliances and coalitions working in close with stroke survivors to further the aims of the charity as required. Working with the MEA Team ensure all publications, content and materials are delivered to the highest quality standards and in line with the brand ensuring bilingual and accessible content is maintained as appropriate. Provide leadership and manage corporate communications (including production of briefings) to present a coherent and joined-up experience of the Stroke Association to key audiences in Wales. Ensure consistency and coordination of internal and external messaging. Ensure the Stroke Association in Wales is well represented through the media (Welsh and English). Acting as a spokesperson of the Stroke Association in Wales and for people affected by stroke. Ensuring a range of other spokespeople within your team are trained and briefed to deal with the media. 8 Oversee the Welsh PR Teams effective and timely media responses to capitalise on opportunities to raise awareness of the charity s work. Maximise the use of the charity s website and digital engagement (including social media) with key audiences using effective and appropriate content. Identify and minimise reputational risks and work with the Deputy Director PR and Communications to implement the Stroke Associations Crisis Communications protocol. Develop and maintain working relationships and relationship building activities with welsh national and local consumer, print, online and broadcast media contacts. Lead on national events including Wales Stroke Assembly and Staff conferences and support fundraising activity. to stroke survivors. 10 Person specification Education Degree level, and/ or relevant qualification/formal training in Communications/ Policy / Marketing or equivalent Willingness to undertake training and continuing professional development Experience Experience of using technology and IT systems Proven track record of leading and developing high performing teams, and of managing and motivating staff and volunteers Proven experience of initiating and leading on campaign/policy/ PR work resulting in effective change at a national level Experience of developing and leading cross-functional policy and influencing programmes in organisations Experience in writing and delivering papers and presentations for senior audiences and adapting to meet the needs of different audiences Experience of working within the national voluntary sector in Wales Experience of leading bilingual communication strategies Experience of effective commissioning/managing of communications, translation and other professional suppliers including digital and social media Skills and abilities Ability to communicate effectively face to face, in writing, by , on the telephone, including public speaking.
