4 Shrink-Kon Overview Heavy Wall Heat Shrinkable Insulators When it comes to moisture-proofing connections and terminations, T&B s heat shrinkable tubing, boots, and end caps have proven themselves over years of service to the industry. Made of thermally stabilized cross-linked polyolefin, these heat-shrinkable insulators may be used over lead, steel, aluminum, copper, standard plastic and elastomeric insulating materials. T&B heat shrinkable insulators are designed to be easy to use while assuring that the recovered wall thickness is greater than that of the jacket it replaces. Where applicable, T&B heat shrink insulators are U.L. and CSA listed. Also, all standard size insulators have an internally applied adhesive sealant. T&B Heat Shrink Insulators Offer: Heavy duty protection A full range of sizes from #16 to 1000MCM Insulation for 3" and 4" bus bar Field-proven reliability rated 600V, 90 C Improved protection against moisture is provided by the internal sealant. Products Include: High Shrink Ratio HSHR series with 6:1 shrink ratio designed for applications with extreme differences between cable, connector and back shell sizes. Flame Retardant HSFR series provides maximum flame retardancy. For special applications. Heavy Wall Heat Shrinkable End Cap, Boots Redesigned for superior durability and performance! Seals and insulates cable ends at a 600V rating. Installs fast, while providing insulation resistance to moisture, corrosion and abrasion. The extra thickness at the tip of the end cap prevents sharp ends of the cable from puncturing the seal. Seals and insulates multiconductor cables and conduit with the same cost savings and superior properties of T&B s heat shrinkable tubing. These boots replace time consuming tapes, epoxies, encapsulations and dips. The boots are internally coated with sealant. Thin Wall Tubing Manufactured from stabilized Polyolefin, these insulators are used to insulate bare Sta-Kon splices and terminals. They additionally provide a degree of strain relief and may be used to harness wires. Available in cut pieces or reels. Colours also available. Products Include: 3:1 adhesive lined thin wall CPO-A series provides excellent flexibility with environmental sealing capability. 2:1 halogen free, low-smoke generating thin wall, CPO-HF series. For use in contained areas including underground transportation, shipboard, offshore, military and aerospace applications. Covers These new insulating covers provide hard shell insulated protection for H type compression taps and splices, and, because there is no taping required, you get uniform quality and appearance each time. The exclusive locking design provides the range taking capability. Only five H-tap insulating catalogue numbers accommodate the range of 6 AWG 1000 MCM in the main, and 12 AWG 500 MCM in the branch. Hard shell outer covers guard against impact inner seal keeps out dust. Installs quickly and easily without special tools simply snaps together Eliminates time consuming taping Provides high quality, neat, uniform installations Range taking design reduces inventory. 4

20 Shrink-Kon Heat Shrinkable Cable Repair Sleeve TBCRLS Series - Installation Instructions GENERAL 1. Always comply with the following installation procedure. Failure to do so can result in fire, explosion, and serious or fatal injury. 2. Consult the product data sheet for the appropriate wraparound sleeve type, size and recommended length for the specific application. OPERATION OF TORCH 1. Always us a clean burning Propane or MAPP torch. Canusa s CTCH or equivalent is recommended. 2. Always provide good ventilation for confined workspaces. 3. Consult your company hot work safety procedures before using an open flame. 4. Always use the outside 3 to 4 inch tip of the flame for contact with the heat shrink product. 5. Always keep the flame moving with a smooth brushing motion around the circumference and along the length of the sleeve. 6. Always start shrinking at the middle of the sleeve and work towards each end. 7. If the sleeve is not uniformly recovered, as evidenced by non-uniform wall thickness or dimpling, reheating the area will ensure full recovery. 8. Do not handle the sleeving after recovery, until sufficiently cooled. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Select the proper size CRLS sleeve considering the diameter and necessary length of coverage. Allow a minimum of 3 length overlap on each end of the area to be covered. 2. Remove the plastic release liner and paper mask from the inside of the sleeve exposing the translucent adhesive and adhesive flap. Use caution, so as to only remove the liner and not the excess flap of adhesive. This flap is approximately 2 in width, located at the end near the butyl hold down strip (see Figure 1). Figure 3 Figure 4 6. Continue shrinking the sleeve from the center towards one end, applying heat along the flap area and in a circular motion around the sleeve (see Figure 6). While shrinking, check the flap to ensure good contact. If the flap joint is not flush or begins to curl during the shrinking process, re-apply pressure to the flap joint. When the sleeve has adequately recovered, sealant will flow from the end and seal circumferentially. Figure 6 Figure 1 3. Wrap the CRLS sleeve loosely around the cable, forming a tube, so that the adhesive is on the inside. Tuck the end of the sleeve in behind the excess flap of adhesive so that the adhesive forms the tube around the cable (see Figure 2). Figure 2 5. Using a broad colorless or yellow flame (DO NOT USE A CONCENTRATED BLUE FLAME), begin heating below the area marked HEAT HERE FIRST which runs along the length of the sleeve (see Figure 5). Heat the indicated area with a brushing motion until a slight wrinkle occurs. Once the sleeve begins to recover, move the flame over the flap, along the entire length of the sleeve. Do this in the same manner as described earlier being careful not to apply too much heat between the factory weld and the area above the butyl strip. 7. Repeat the same procedure, shrinking from the center towards the other end until the sleeve has completely recovered. 8. Finally, apply the same additional heat over the flap closure area marked HEAT HERE FIRST using end-to-end strokes and if required, possibly a small amount of pressure to ensure a proper weld (see Figure 7.) Figure 7 Figure 5 4. Remove the paper protection covering the butyl hold down strip (see Figure 3). Press the butyl hold down strip onto the sleeve in the desired location and using the palm of your hand or a rubber roller, apply firm pressure to hold in place (see Figure 4). 9. Installation is now complete. 20
