1 Overview Protect your business critical applications without impacting performance using (RMC). This automated, non-intrusive software combines the simplicity and performance of snapshots with the reliability and cost effective retention of deduplicated backups. RMC integrates 3PAR StoreServ primary storage and StoreOnce Backup for converged data protection that delivers assured recovery of application-consistent recovery points with flexible recovery options. RMC offers a simple, efficient and fast backup and recovery solution, which augments traditional backup applications rather than replacing them. HP StoreOnce RMC for VMware is a licensable option that enables customers to protect VMware Virtual Machine Disks (VMDKs) and data stores using application-consistent snapshots for rapid online recovery. At the same time, the Express Protect feature offers a second-tier of data protection by facilitating direct backup from 3PAR StoreServ to StoreOnce. Backups to StoreOnce are self-contained volumes, deduplicated to save space, and can be used to recover back to the original or a different 3PAR StoreServ array, even if the original base volume is lost. VMware administrators can access all of this functionality from within the familiar VMware vcenter management console. Application plug-ins Overview provides integration with specific hypervisor/application environments through the following plug-ins. for VMware: allows VMware administrators to create hundreds of VM-aware consistent snapshots and initiate rapid online recovery directly from within the VMware vcenter Server virtualization management console. Using the StoreOnce RMC Express Protect feature, customers can also backup to StoreOnce directly. The backups are self-contained volumes that can be restored back to the original or different 3PAR StoreServ array in the event of a disaster. OneView for VMware vcenter plug-in: gives VMware administrators enhanced visibility of storage resources and precise insight into how individual virtual machines are mapped to datastores and individual storage volumes. When used in conjunction with StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central for VMware, this plug-in gives administrators the power of seamless, rapid online recovery from either snapshots or backups directly from within the vcenter Server virtualization management console. This feature practically eliminates backup impact on the application server, providing seamless, non-intrusive data protection without the need for a backup application. While RMC does not completely replace a backup application, it does provide the basic functionality of traditional backups through a simpler, lower cost solution. Snapshot efficiency; RMC uses an array-based approach that leverages HP 3PAR StoreServ Virtual Copy feature to create highly space-efficient snapshots without the use of separate agents installed on individual virtual machines. Synthetic full backups are generated in-line using the prior set of objects and leveraging 3PAR StoreServ Snapdiff technology to identify and sends only the incrementally changed blocks to StoreOnce for a more efficient and intelligent approach. Recover to any point in time. Scalable, non-duplicative snapshots allow administrators a greater number of backups for a frequent extended history of recovery points, giving flexibility when committing to a given Recovery Point Objective (RPO). Each StoreOnce backup is a self-contained volume which can be used to restore to the original or a different StoreServ array, even if the original base volume on StoreServ is completely lost. This level of data protection cannot be obtained using Snapshots alone. StoreOnce RMC provides a programmable interface via REST API SDK for scripting purposes so you can integrate the application-consistent snapshot and backup management capabilities with your business applications. 7 Purchasing Information Licensing Notes: There are two types of licenses base license and an array-specific, application-specific license The base license only enables crash-consistent snapshots For application-consistent snapshots, application-specific licenses are required. These are licensed per storage array. Purchase of this license To enable the Express Protect feature for backups to a StoreOnce device, a StoreOnce Catalyst license is mandatory All RMC licenses can be obtained through the Licgen tool ( by providing the serial number of the 3PAR StoreServ array and the licenses need to be installed through the 3PAR command line interface. Please refer to the StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central User Guide for more details on installing the license.
