13 How Far Can One Go? Innovative sustainable energy technologies developed for Colorado Court include a natural-gas turbine cogeneration system that generates the base electrical load and provides the building's hot water needs. Photovoltaics integrated into the facade and roof supply most of the peak-load energy demand. Unused energy from these solar panels is fed into the grid during daytime hours and retrieved from the grid at night as needed. 14 Energy Strategies Energy Efficiency Shading for south-facing windows Minimal glazing on the west facade Double-pane, low-e, krypton-sealed, high-efficiency glazing Compact fluorescent, low-mercury bulbs Indoor and outdoor motion sensors for lighting R-21 insulation throughout the building (recycled blown-in cellulose in 2x6 framing) R-30 insulation in the roof Integration of the water heating, space heating, and cogeneration waste heat systems Compact, energy-efficient, non-cfc refrigerators Energy-efficient heat pump with ozonefriendly refrigerant Reflective roof coating Colorado Court Apts. - Santa Monica, California Pugh + Scarpa Architects

15 Cooling Strategies Use Building orientation and siting to control heat gain Reflective roof coating Use light-colored exterior walls and roofs Minimize number of east and west windows Shade south windows with exterior louvers, awnings, or trellises Use siting and topography to enhance summer breezes Reduce internal heat gains by improving lighting and appliance efficiency Use building-integrated photovoltaics (PV) to shade structure Colorado Court Apts. - Santa Monica, California Pugh + Scarpa Architects

23 Located in Chicago's Near North neighborhood, near the Cabrini-Green public housing project. 46,000 square feet. average unit size of its 96 living units is 300 square feet. 48 of the units are reserved for people with limited incomes. 48 units are reserved for people who are homeless and disabled. "Green Design" - generate a portion of its own power with wind turbines (aeroturbines), solar thermal collectors, and collect and recycle rainwater in cisterns. Supportive Housing - blends supportive services (case management, counseling, employment assistance, skills and leadership development) with permanent, affordable housing. Part of the City's 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness by creating supportive housing for homeless people in Chicago. Part of the City s plan to create mixed-income communities with newly constructed affordable rental units, single family homes, and commercial space.
