2 PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector. A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of: Conducting an electrical test and inspection of a domestic single-phase installation to ensure compliance with all statutory requirements. Using appropriate test instruments and understanding the indicated results. Using appropriate inspection documents. Completing the appropriate inspection documents with correct and relevant information. This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and uplift meant within the electrical engineering and construction environment. This unit standard is a pre requisite for registration as an accredited person and does not give the learner the legal right to issue a Certificate of Compliance. The registering authority will d o registration as an accredited person. This unit standard may not cover the Explosion Industry. LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent: Wire and commission domestic electrical circuits. Have awareness of the application of statutory regulations to the installation. UNIT STANDARD RANGE N/A Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 Plan the electrical installation tests to be done. Job instructions are interpreted and a sequence of operations is determined according to the installation environment and the required task. Appropriate tools, equipment and instruments are identified and selected to meet the requirements of the task according to statutory and environmental requirements. Author: K van der Westhuizen Next Revision: 01 June 2014 Page 2 of 6

3 The correct documentation necessary to complete the task is obtained as per data man agement requirements. The safety rules and regulations regarding the task are understood according to statutory requirements and safe work procedures. Environmental hazards and safety risks are identified according to environmental standards and safety risk analyses. SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 Inspect the electrical installation. Permission is obtained to carry out task as per local requirements. The installation is inspected for compliance to the statutory and environmental requirements. Appropriate documentation for the type of installation is completed as per data management requirements. Any non-compliant components within the installation are identified and understood as per quality requirements. All safety requirements are observed and demonstrated during the inspection as per safe work procedures. SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 Test the electrical installation. Permission is obtained to carry out task as per local requirements. Author: K van der Westhuizen Next Revision: 01 June 2014 Page 3 of 6

4 Installation is tested according to the statutory requirements from the SANS code. Appropriate documentation is completed as per data management requirements. Appropriate test instruments are used competently to obtain meaningful readings in accordance with the statutory requirements. The measurements obtained from the test are understood as per SANS requirements. ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 All safety precautions are observed and demonstrated during the test as per safe work procedures. SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 Complete the required test and inspection documentation. All personnel, tools, instruments and excess equipment are remo ved from the installation according to work site procedures. The work area is restored to its original condition on completion of the test/inspection procedures as per safety requirements. The certificate of compliance is correctly and accurately completed according to applicable SANS requirements. The results of the inspection and test are communicated to all concerned as per reporting procedures. A defect list is compiled and corrective action taken if necessary as per quality requirements. 5 UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an a ssessor with the relevant ETQA. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures. UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE Knowledge that will help me understand and that I will be able to explain: Working knowledge of SANS Inspection documents and check lists pertaining to a single phase installation including the contents of a Certificate of Compliance. Understand the concepts of a single phase installation and its environment. Types of material/equipment that may be used in electrical installations. Appropriate fault finding techniques for a single phase installation. Important factors affecting the safety of the installation for the user. The importance of accurately recording data and test results. The importance of understanding the SANS code in order to recognise defects and their specific relationship to the code requirements for installed electrical equipment. UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME N/A UNIT STANDARD LINKAGES N/A Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO): UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING Organise oneself and ones activities responsibly and effectively (with the ability to follow instructions when working by ones self or in a work team, ensure safe execution of work activities). UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING Collect, evaluate, organise and critically evaluate information related to maintaining and repairing electric power tools. UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING Effective use of communication methods when giving instructions to fellow workers, following of instructions, recording and reporting information.
