1 TROSIFOL STRUCTURAL GLAZING Photo: Blackstation & Gensler TROSIFOL STRUCTURAL AND SECURITY GLAZING PRODUCTS MAKING GLASS STRONGER Jennifer Schneider The use of laminated glass in structural glazing applications has become more recognized and preferred as a safer choice to monolithic tempered or heat strengthened glass. This is due to the glass retention characteristic of laminated glass resulting in greatly improved post glass breakage properties providing enhanced safety. Trosifol Structural offers two different options to meet your needs. Structural & Security Glazing Segment Manager Kuraray America Inc., Wilmington / USA Structural interlayers are stiff interlayers that increase the strength of the glass structure by creating a coupling effect with the glass. This coupling effect increases the effective thickness of the laminate allowing it to withstand higher loads, and will also enable the use of thinner glass to achieve the same load strength. Structural interlayers provide superior post breakage strength over other interlayers and are an excellent choice for applications such as glass railings, stairs, floors, balconies, overhead glazing, minimally supported facades, open edge glazing, large facades and curtain wall systems. 2 STRUCTURAL INTERLAYERS Photo: zhu difeng/shutterstock.com Trosifol offers the broadest portfolio of architectural interlayers, including Trosifol Extra Stiff and ionoplast, two products designed to meet structural glazing performance requirements. Both interlayers are UltraClear and provide a high quality aesthetic appearance especially in combination with low iron glass. For structural and security applications, Trosifol Structural offers different options to best meet your needs Stiff polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer Available in rolls up to 321 cm Caliper 0.76 mm ( 30 mil) High stiffness and strength allows for thinner glass, reduced cost, and large glass designs Excellent edge stability Can be combined with other colored PVB interlayers* Excellent post breakage strength Very high clarity ionoplast interlayer Over 15 years of proven field performance Based on unique ionoplast chemistry; contains no plasctizers Caliper range from 0.76 mm (30 mil) to 3.04 mm (105 mils) Highest level of structural performance over wide range of temperatures and load durations of any interlayer High stiffness and strength allows for thinner glass, reduced cost and large glass designs Excellent sealant compatibility Available in clear and translucent white Only translucent white structural interlayer with performance over wide range of temperatures and load durations Rolls or sheet in widths up to 270 cm (106 inches) Superior edge stability Over 17 years natural weathering * As with any stiff PVB when it is combined with a standard PVB the resulting film will have higher stiffness than standard PVB and lower stiffness than the original stiff PVB. Excellent post breakage strength over a broad range of temperatures and loads Very high clarity Miami Dade county approval for use in hurricane glazing 02 BULLETIN

3 HIGHEST CLARITY OF ANY STRUCTURAL INTERLAYER Structural interlayers from Trosifol have the best clarity when compared to other structural interlayers. No yellow tint that can be found in other interlayers Enhanced whiteness when combined with low iron glass SUPERIOR EDGE STABILITY FOR OPEN EDGE APPLICATIONS Edge stability is defined as a laminate s resistance over time to form defects along its edge. Edge Stability Number (ESN) is a measurement of the amount of delamination seen at the edges of a laminate after exposure to natural weathering. The number represents the length and depth of the delamination. The weighted system assigns higher importance to progressively deeper defects. The higher the ESN the worse the edge stability. A laminate with no defects would have an ESN of 0 (zero), and the maximum would be 2500 (equivalent to continuous defects measuring > 6.4 mm [1/4 in] around the entire perimeter). ESN of laminates Product Duration [years] 2 17 Edge Stability Number [ESN] 0 0 Effect of temperature on structural properties is a typical stiff PVB product that provides full structural properties up to 30 C. ionoplast interlayer provides structural properties over a wide range of temperatures. Below are photos of post breakage strength at 21 C and at 50 C for both and compared with standard PVB. 21 C (70 F) Both and (9 mm and 2 mm) can sustain a load of 400 kg for 30 minutes. Standard PVB could not even sustain a load of 100 kg. Standard PVB 2 mm 2 mm 9 mm At 50 C (131 F) only the could sustain a load of 100 kg for 30 minutes Please find videos of the tests on our website: 03 BULLETIN 2 mm 9 mm
