It develops exhibitions and events at its College Street site and other locations that increase community access and understanding of this information. The Museum also provides strategic advice to businesses and government bodies on scientific matters. The Australian Museum s mission is: To inspire the exploration of nature and cultures. The Design and Creative Media Unit is part of Program Delivery and Production that is one of four Branches that make up the Public Engagement and Culture Division. This Division is responsible for the development and delivery of the many and varied ways the Museum interacts with its visiting public, whether virtual, through the door or through outreach programs. The Design and Creative Media Unit plays a critical role in the planning, development and delivery of these programs. Primary purpose of the role The Design and Creative Media Unit combines the skills of design, photography and video production to produce the creative output for exhibitions, strategic projects, and marketing and communications of the Australian Museum. The unit works to promote the Museum s brand and ensure the visitor experience is of the highest standard. The Manager Design and Creative Media manages and directs development and delivery of 3D and 2D design solutions, and photographic and audio visual media for print, digital, display and exhibitions. As an experienced graphic designer the position holder contributes to the output of the Unit by undertaking design work. Key accountabilities Manage and direct the production of graphic and exhibition design and communication material, and photographic and audio visual media for the Museum Manage and implement design solutions that are creative, appropriate and consistent with the Museum s style and vision, while also conveying the aims, messages and themes of each project 1

2 Ensure that all design and documentation produced by the 3D designers complies with the appropriate legislated standards and codes and that graphic design work follows accessibility guidelines Develop strategies and plan the use of internal resources to ensure effective and efficient delivery of projects Manage and monitor the production of 3D and 2D design and photography through external suppliers Maintain awareness and familiarity with emerging technologies to utilise the tools required to maximise product quality Supervise the day-to-day workflow of the Design and Creative Media team Contribute to the planning, development and design of the refurbishment of galleries and exhibitions in the Museum as part of the Museum Rejuvenation project Key challenges Ensuring that staff manage time constraints to deliver projects on time, within the brief and within budget, including supervising and scheduling printers and other commercial suppliers and ensuring that high standards are upheld Developing creative design solutions to complicated project briefs within the constraints of the available resources while ensuring a high-level of customer service and satisfaction Meeting expectations of a high-quality product, utilising and maintaining knowledge of technology in an industry that is diverse and rapidly changing Key relationships Who Internal Why Clients, Project teams The position holder regularly communicates with clients for whom work is being undertaken to overview priorities and project progress, and ensure the quality of the delivered product. Branch Head and Unit Managers The position holder has an important and regular collaborative relationship with the Branch Head and the Program Delivery and Production Unit Managers to offer practical solutions for issues arising from exhibition and project development, and related marketing and communications. Development, Marketing and Communications The position holder has regular communication with the Development, Marketing and Communications Branch to plan and schedule design work for print, digital and online, and to ensure consistent use of the Museum brand. Design and Creative Media staff Within the Design and Creative Media Unit the position holder communicates with staff on a daily basis to co-ordinate projects and ensure staff are supported and enabled to work to agreed timelines and budgets. They are also required to exchange ideas and offer advice. External Freelance designers and photographers The position holder in consultation with the Studio Coordinator engages and oversees the work of freelance designers and photographers when internal resources are not available. 3 Who Production houses, suppliers and contractors Why The position holder regularly communicates with external suppliers and contractors and together with the Studio Coordinator monitors production to ensure the quality of the delivered product. Role dimensions Decision making The position holder works independently within the parameters set by the requirements of the design brief. The position holder translates client needs to create innovative design solutions and recommends appropriate design options and materials. The position holder must be able to complete projects independently within the financial and time parameters provided in the project brief. On a day to day basis the position holder plans and sets priorities for the work to be completed. The position holder sources, recommends and oversees designers and photographers, printers and other commercial suppliers and acts as the middle person between these contractors and the client. The position holder provides direction and advice to staff. After discussion with the Branch Head the position holder makes decisions relating to staff recruitment, major design program development and final preparation of the annual budget. Reporting line This role reports to the Branch Head Program Delivery, Production, Design and Creative Media Direct reports Studio Coordinator Photographer 3D Designer x 2 Graphic Designer x 3 Budget/Expenditure Design and Creative Media Unit budget for outsourcing design and photography, art materials and equipment, staff development and training. Production budgets as allocated, depending on the nature of the project assigned.
