Future opportunities for bioeconomy in the West Nordic countries Research group leader Business Development

Arctic Bioeconomy project - Acknowledgement The project was financed by: The Nordic Council of Ministers Arctic Co-operation Programme, NKJ (Nordic Joint Committee for Agricultural and Food Research), AG-Fisk (Working Group for Fisheries Co-operation) One contribution: SNS (Nordic Forest Research), NordGen (the Nordic Genetic Resource Centre), Matis

Acknowledgement The Icelandic chairmanship program NordBio has also contributed to the project by: Initiating the mapping of waste as a source for value creation in the region Adopting identified opportunities in the West Nordic countries into the NordBio innovation program. 4 Inclusive bioeconomy

The project Arctic Bioeconomy Focus on West Nordic countries Discussions and conclusions Regional policy forum and strategy setting Opportunities across sectors Underutilized resources and new opportunities The Blue Bioeconomy Rural development and infrastructure to support innovation, centre of excellence How to create synergy between (West) Nordic and EU H2020 funding

Discussions and conclusions the way forward Regional policy forum and strategy setting The bioeconomy in the West Nordic countries is a large part of the GDP Production and export mainly limited to primary production Possibilities for growth and added value creation by strengthening secondary industries and service sectors The sustainable use of resources and protection of the environment are key issues in the West Nordic countries The environment in the West Nordic is very vulnerable to pollution and effects of climate change

Protection of the environment is a key issue in the West Nordic countries

Discussions and conclusions the way forward Regional policy forum and strategy setting The common interests of the West Nordic countries are apparent and call for close cooperation of the countries in putting their common interests on the agenda both in Nordic and other international collaboration and strategy settings A West Nordic Bioeconomy panel / West Nordic bioeconomy stakeholder platform - to identify opportunities and set a common strategy for the West Nordic region - promoting common policy With the aim to strengthen the Bioeconomy in the region, as well as opening up new opportunities for research and innovation in the region - and extend collaboration to other circumpolar regions

Discussions and conclusions the way forward Opportunities across sectors Enhancing interdisciplinary cooperation between different sectors increases the growth potential of the economy Transfer of knowledge and best practices, between sectors Research and development are essential in pushing the bioeconomy further and should be supported across sectors Tourism in the West Nordic countries can provide opportunities and jobs for the inhabitants and can be important in co-utilizing resources within the bioeconomy and increase their value - By combining the unique nature, wildlife, fisheries, agriculture and activities such as horse riding, hunting tours, salmon fishing local food etc.

Horse riding, trout fishing & local food

From wood to food Opportunities across sectors

Cross Sectoral innovation

Discussions and conclusions the way forward Underutilized resources The macro-algae are growing in abundance in the coastal waters of the West Nordic In the Faroe Islands, macro-algae is cultivated off shore and Iceland has promising prospects for algae biomass production with geothermal energy Improve processes and apply new technology to minimize waste and maximize value Better utilization of feed and new possibilities in feed production should be given much more attention

Feed production = opportunities in food production

Discussions and conclusions the way forward The Blue Bioeconomy Marine bioresources important biological resources of the West Nordic countries Technological transfer between the countries and increased cooperation Increased processing yields within the fisheries Biotechnology and fishing industry = increased value Aquaculture industry is growing -sharing of knowledge and experiences between counters and sectors is important

Fish skin to valuable products Fashion clothing Skin and Tissue Repair with Fish Skin Transplants

High value (co-)products Organic acids Polyphenols Fatty acids Polysaccharides Monosaccharides Trace elements Platform chemicals Cartilage compounds Secondary metabolites Proteins Peptides Enzymes Biofuel

Multiple use of (co-)products Food ingredients Aquaculture Agriculture Medicine Supplements Process aids Cosmetics Research products Medical products

Discussions and conclusions the way forward Rural development and infrastructure to support innovation Today: People seek education away from the rural areas and often do not return due to lack of job opportunities, isolation and other problems The way forward - Center of excellence By increasing the number of jobs for educated people in the secondary sector with innovation, research and further processing of raw materials from the primary sectors, there is a possibility of: - Creating more value in the economy - Altering the trend of young people, especially women, moving from rural areas to the larger towns, cities and other countries

Discussions and conclusions the way forward Rural development and infrastructure to support innovation Center of excellence An interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence (CoE) would focus on issues related to the region such as: - bioeconomy - environmental issues - social issues - energy production - solutions to increase added value of production The CoE would cooperate with experts from the other Nordic Countries as well as from e.g. Canada and other countries involved in Arctic research

Discussions and conclusions the way forward How to create synergy between (West) Nordic & European H2020 funding It is important for the West Nordic countries to promote common interests, provide inputs and influence agendas in international research and Pan- European innovation programs Utilize established West Nordic networks and regional expertise, as well as building of new Networks and policy / stakeholder platforms for the region It is important to monitor calls the H2020 and identify collaboration opportunities for innovation in the region The initiatives supporting bioeconomy in the West Nordic countries will have most impact if they can be paralleled with European and other international research and innovation programs - Promote projects of regional interest to a more extensive European participation

(National to Nordic to European) The aim is to increase the value of convenience food by adding functional ingredients, produced from underutilised marine based raw materials and by-products from fish processing, with confirmed bioavailability
