Weeds redue rop yields nd qulity, hror insets nd plnt diseses, nd use irrigtion nd hrvesting prolems (Chndler et l., 4; Lorenzi nd Jeffery, 7; Currie, 5; Mssing et l., 9, 3). As result, weeds redue the totl vlue of griulturl produts in the United Sttes y to 5% (Lorenzi nd Jeffery, 7). Estimted verge losses during 5 to 9 in the potentil prodution of field orn, pottoes, nd onion rnged from 7 to 6% in the Mountin Sttes Region, whih inludes New Mexio (Chndler et l., 4). Sn Jun County rnks first in potto prodution, fourth in lflf prodution, nd seond in orn prodution mong ll New Mexio ounties (New Mexio Agriulturl Sttistis, 7). An estimted 9% of ll tillge opertions re for weed ontrol (J.G. Foster, personl ommunitions, 5 7). Heriides n redue the numer of required tillge opertions nd n e used where ultivtion is not possile, suh s within rop rows or in solid-seeded rops. With inresing fuel nd lor osts, heriides re often more eonomil thn other methods of weed ontrol. Mny heriides re pproved for use on rops grown on medium- nd fine-textured, high-orgni soils. Little informtion is ville, however, regrding their effetiveness nd sfety on low-orgni, orse-textured soils tht re ommon to northwestern New Mexio. The Environmentl Protetion Ageny (EPA) hs eome more stringent with regrd to reserh dt required for pestiide pprovl. Thus, it hs eome ritil tht stte Agriulturl Siene Centers work losely Respetively, College Professor, Deprtment of Entomology, Plnt Pthology nd Weed Siene, nd Superintendent, Agriulturl Siene Center t Frmington; Professor, Deprtment of Plnt nd Environmentl Sienes; College Professor, Deprtment of Plnt nd Environmentl Sienes; nd Assistnt Professor, Agriulturl Siene Center t Frmington, ll of New Mexio Stte University. 2 with ommeril ompnies developing new pestiides in order to otin the reserh dt required y the EPA. This oopertion will enefit the griulturl industry of the stte nd ssist EPA pestiide registrtion. Before, the use of heriides in northwestern New Mexio ws limited. Most growers were still using,4-d in orn for rodlef weed ontrol, while nnul grsses were left in hek. In lflf, urning winter nnul mustrd nd downy rome with propne ws not unommon. An heriide field-sreening progrm hs provided essentil informtion on the tivity of new nd old heriides on rops grown in northwestern New Mexio (Arnold, 8). As new lnd on the Nvjo Indin Irrigtion Projet omes under ultivtion, weed nd inset prolems re vried nd my hnge with eh suessive rop. It is only through ontinued reserh tht the demnd for relile informtion on the use of pestiides in northwestern New Mexio n e met. I wish to express my sinere ppreition to the following ompnies for providing tehnil ssistne, produts, nd/or finnil ssistne: Byer CropSienes, BASF, E.I. DuPont, Gown, BLM/FFO, FMC, Monsnto, Dow AgroSienes, Nvjo Agriulturl Produts Industry, Pioneer Hi-Bred, Syngent Crop Protetion, nd Southwest Seed. BASF, Brodlef Weed Control in Spring- Seeded Alflf Seedling lflf requires effetive rod-spetrum weed ontrol for suessful estlishment; however, few heriides re registered for postemergene rodlef weed ontrol. Field trils were onduted to evlute rodlef weed ontrol to Rptor lone or in omintion. Ojetives Determine effiy of Rptor lone or in omintion pplied to spring-seeded lflf. Determine lflf tolerne to pplied seleted heriides nd lflf yield. Mterils nd methods A field experiment ws onduted in 8 on Wll sndy lom (less thn % orgni mtter) soil t Frmington, NM, to evlute the response of spring-seeded lflf nd nnul rodlef weeds to postemergene pplitions of Rptor lone or in omintion. The experimentl design ws rndomized omplete lok with three replitions. Individul plots were ft wide y 3 ft long. Tretments were pplied with ompressed ir kpk spryer lirted to deliver 3 gl/ t 3 psi. Alflf (vr. WL 343HQ) ws plnted t l/ with Mssey Ferguson grin drill on My 5. Postemergene tretments were pplied on June 4 when lflf ws in the 3rd to 4th trifoliolte lef stge nd weeds were smll (<3 4 in.). The mximum nd minimum ir tempertures during tretment pplition were 9 F nd 6 F, respetively. A totl of pproximtely 3 in. of sprinkler-pplied wter were pplied to ll tretments form My 5 to August 5. Blk nightshde, redroot nd prostrte pigweed, nd ommon lmsqurters infesttions were hevy nd Russin thistle infesttions were light throughout the experimentl re. Crop injury nd weed ontrol evlutions were mde on July 4. Alflf ws hrvested with n Almo self-propelled plot hrvester on August 5. A gr smple ws tken from eh plot to determine protein ontent nd reltive feed vlue. Results otined were sujeted to nlysis of vrine t P =.5. Results nd disussion Weed ontrol nd injury evlutions: Results of rop injury nd weed ontrol evlutions re given in Tle. No rop injury ws noted from ny of the tretments. All tretments gve good to exellent ontrol of Russin thistle, redroot nd prostrte pigweed, nd lk nightshde. Rptor pplied lone t.3 l i/ gve poor ontrol of ommon lmsqurters (Tle ). Yield nd protein ontent: Results of yield re given in Tle. With the hevy rodlef weed infesttion, the weedy hek hd the highest yield of 3.7 t/. BASF, Brodlef Weed Control in Dry Bens Approximtely % of New Mexio s dry en prodution ours in northwestern New Mexio. Most of this prodution ours under sprinkler irrigtion on orsetextured soils. Pinto en growers usully inorporte one or two heriides in omintion preplnt, nd then follow with one mehnil ultivtion for nnul weed ontrol. Weeds ompete vigorously with dry ens, nd yield redutions exeeding 7% hve een reorded. Mny growers re not hieving effetive fullseson weed ontrol, whih hs led to the development of Pursuit, Rptor, nd, reently, Vlor for weed ontrol in dry edile ens. Ojetives Determine rodlef weed ontrol of pplied seleted heriides. Determine dry en tolerne to pplied seleted heriides nd dry en yield. Annul Dt Report -8 Pge
