2 The World is Becoming Smarter Every Day 2.5 billion RFID tags sold in million GPS devices sold annually by million smart electric meters in M by 2014 Text messages generate 400TB of data daily in the U.S. MRIs will generate a Petabyte of data globally this year

3 Smarter Transactions: Singapore Land Transportation Authority Challenge: With its population growing, Singapore s Land Transport Authority (LTA) needed a way to head off traffic congestion and maintain its world-class business climate. Benefits: 80% reduction in revenue leakage from lost transactions due to systems issues 2% reduction in the overall lifecycle cost of the fare processing system while doubling its performance capacity to 20 million fare transactions per day Ability to accommodate multiple fare card issuers, increasing convenience for commuters and lowering costs Solution: The LTA worked with IBM to develop a flexible, open and unified fare processing system that integrates all modes of public transport. The new systems use card readers to capture rider information at all points in the transportation network; this information is fed into a single national fare processing clearinghouse. This enables the LTA to create holistic, detailed transportation profiles of riders that span all modes of travel. Solution components: DB2 WebSphere Application Server Tivoli Storage Manager Rational Power Systems System x DS4800, TS3310
