S/6-EA ELECTRIC CONTROL OPERATION All Spacesaver electric systems include all or some of the many Spacesaver safety devices offered for operator safety and protection. The intent here is to describe the proper use of the electric controls and also to provide instruction about the various safety devices developed to insure the safety of those using the system. This overview of operation and safety features may include information about options not incorporated into your unique Spacesaver systems. SWITCH FUNCTIONS: The STOP button shuts the carriage down abruptly. The RESET button will shut the carriage down softly. The RESET button will reset the system after a safety fault. The black plastic channel below the switches hides the receptacles for the various keys. Gently pull out and down to expose the receptacles. 1. Starting the system without the "system on-off" key option: 1.1 These controls are always ready for operation. There is no need to power this system up. 1.2 All green L.E.D.'s will glow at the front of each carriage to indicate that the system is ready for your use. 2. Starting the system with the "system on-off" key option: 2.1 System keys are small key-like modules that plug into a key slot just below the system control switches. The key slot is concealed behind a black plastic channel which runs the full width of the front enclosure. The key slots are exposed by gently pulling outward and downward on the black plastic channel. Note that the key slot is designed to accept the key in only one position. Do not force the key. 2.2 The on-off key has four buttons. Red "off", green "on", and two blue buttons which we will look at later. 2.3 To turn the system on, insert the key into the key slot located behind the black plastic channel. The key can be inserted at any carriage front. Press the green "on" button for at least one full second. 2.4 At this time, all the L.E.D.'s will blink momentarily and the green L.E.D.'s will glow to indicate that the system is ready for your use. Before power-up, the L.E.D.'s will not be lit. 2.5 To turn the system off, insert the key at any location, and press the red "off" button. The electronic key provides extra media security by electronically deactivating the system. 1

3. Selecting an aisle with the "touch and hold" option: 3.1 Push in and hold the aisle select button on either side of the desired aisle. Carriage movment will cease only when pressure is removed from the button or when the aisle is fully open. 3.2 Just before carriage movement begins, a warning horn will sound for several seconds. As the carriages move, an orange warning beacon on the electrical enclosure of each moving carriage will blink and the red L.E.D.'s will point the direction of carriage movement. When carriage movement ends, the green L.E.D.'s will again glow. 4. Selecting an aisle with the "one touch" option: 4.1 Push in and hold the aisle select button on either side of the desired aisle until the warning horn stops and carriage movement begins. Release the button and the selected aisle will open automatically. Carriage movement will cease when the aisle is fully open. 4.2 Carriage movement can be stopped abruptly by pressing any stop button. Pressing any reset button will stop the carriage softly. 4.3 Just before carriage movement begins, a warning horn will sound for several seconds, as the carriages move, an orange warning beacon on the electrical enclosure of each moving carriage will blink and the red L.E.D.'s will point the direction of the carriage movement. When carriage movement ends, the green L.E.D.'s will again glow. 4.4 The red L.E.D.'s will glow as long as pressure is applied to the stop button. 5. Selecting an aisle with the "touch and hold" manual reset option: 5.1 Aisle selection with this option is identical to # Once the aisle is fully open, no other carriage movement is possible until the "reset" button is pressed at the open aisle. Once the"reset" button is pushed, the green L.E.D.'s will again glow indicating the system is ready for your next command. 5.3 If, for any reason, the aisle select button is released during carriage movement, the carriage can be restarted only if the button is pressed again before the carriage comes to a complete stop. Once the carriage has come to a complete stop, the reset button must be pressed before carriage movement can be restarted. 6. Selecting an aisle with the "one touch" manual reset option: 6.1 Aisle selection with this option is identical to # Once the aisle is fully open, no other carriage movement is possible until the "reset" button is pressed at the open aisle. Once the "reset" is pressed, the green L.E.D.'s will again glow indicating the system is ready for your next command. 7. Using the programmable carriage function option: 7.1 This function is controlled with the blue "stat" and "move" buttons 2

on the "system on/off" programmable carriage key. 7.2 The programmable aisle feature allows the operator to make any carriage in the system a temporary stationary unit, in effect creating two systems from one. The carriages on either side of the temporary stationary can be operated independently from the other side. The stop buttons will still shut down the entire system. The other safety features will effect only the side that they are activated from. (Safety features will be covered in more detail later.) 7.3 To make use of this feature, the operator must first park the elected temporary stationary carriage in the desired location. Move the carriage into position and stop it by pressing the reset button for a soft stop. Insert the electronic key into either key slot located under the black plastic channel and press the blue "stat" button. Remove the key. 7.4 To reprogram the temporary stationary carriage back to a moveable, insert the key and press the blue "move" button. Remove the key. Normal operation has been restored. 8. Using the photo-electric beam type safety sweep : 8.1 If carriage movement begins while you are in the aisle, it can be stopped by breaking the invisible light beam constantly being projected along the entire length of/and on both sides of each carriage. Two beams sweep the aisle as the carriage moves. If an obstruction of any kind is detected, the carriages will come to an abrupt stop. The low beam sweeps for obstructions close to the floor. The higher beam will pick up larger obstructions. A hinged "beam blocker" is incorporated into the photo beam housing at each end of the carriage. The beam blocker will sense obstructions located at the extreme front or rear of the carriage, thus providing full aisle coverage. The hinged beam blocker works by swinging in to block the beam. 8.2 The safety sweep may also prevent damage to materials left laying in the aisle. 8.3 Remember that sweep activation must be done from floor level. Therefore, never climb on the racking. 8.4 When the safety sweep has been engaged during carriage movment, a single flashing red indication will come on at the effected aisle. No normal system movement is possible until the sweep has been cleared and a reset button at that location has been pressed. 8.5 If it is not possible to clear the sweep obstruction, the following procedure can be used. Press the reset button at the flashing red indicator location. At this time, the flashing red will stop and be replaced with flashing green. Press the aisle select button to move the carriage away from the obstruction. When there is enough room, enter the aisle and remove the obstruction. Normal operation has been restored. 9. Using the electrical mechanical type safety sweep: 9.1 If carriage movement begins while you are in the aisle, it can be stopped by applying pressure to the safety sweep located along 3

the full length of the carriage just above the floor level. 9.2 The safety sweep may also prevent damage to materials left laying is the aisles. 9.3 Remember that sweep activation must be done from floor level. Therefore, never climb on the racking. 9.4 This type of safety sweep behaves just as the photo-electric beam type. Please see Sections 8.4 and 8.5 for symptoms and corrective action. 10. Using the dual control option: 10.1 If the system is fitted with controls mounted at the rear and front of the carriages all functions can be carried out from either end. See the other sections for details. 11. Using the hard wire remote control option: 11.1 This feature allows operation of the system from some remote location A display on the remote panel indicates present aisle, selected aisle, and system condition Aisle selection is made by entering at the key pad the desired aisle and pressing the aisle select button For further information regarding the operation of this remote control consult the "EC-300 Carriage Remote Control" manual titled: "Manual for EC-300 Series Carriage Remote Control with Computer Interface - Desktop and Industrial Versions" 12. Using the wireless remote control option: 12.1 Consult your salesperson for specifics regarding the use of this feature. 4

ATTN: AREA SUPERVISOR ONLY OPERATIONS INSTRUCTIONS FOR S/6 EA SAFETY OVERRIDE KEY Using the safety override key: 1. The safety override key can be used to operate the system when normal operation cannot be restored after a safety shut down. See sections 8 & 9 in the Operation Instructions booklet. To accomplish this first go to the control panel at the closing aisle. Gently pull outward and downward on the black plastic strip located on the face of the control panel. Insert the safety override key into the exposed receptacle. The system can now be operated as if in a normal condition. The key will beep while it is inserted and the carriage is moving. The key only deactivates the aisle safety devices in the aisle being closed. All other safety devices in the Spacesaver system will remain active. 2. Extreme caution must be used while operating under this condition. This method of operation should only be used when the problem causing the carriage shut-down cannot be corrected by the operator. Spacesaver Area Contractor service personnel should be called at once to correct the problem. The Spacesaver Group U.S.A.: 1450 Janesville Ave., Ft.
