What are the prospects for wool in the coming months? How is the crisis in the euro zone going to affect prices? These were some of the major issues discussed at last month's congress of the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) in New York. Economist Chris Wilcox, chairman of the market intelligence committee of IWTO, gave an overview of global demand and supply and the factors that will play a role in the coming months. He described conditions in 2011 as a "tale of two halves". Economic recovery The first half of 2011 was marked by an economic recovery, better consumer confidence and better retail sales in some markets. The mood at fabric trade fairs for Fall/Winter 2011 was buoyant, leading to increased orders and activity in the wool textile industry, notably in Europe. The surging cotton prices and higher synthetic fibre prices increased wool's competitiveness with other fibres. In addition, there was a positive mood in the wool textile industry, all of which led to higher raw wool demand in the first half of The second half of the year saw concerns about government debt in Europe increasing, leading to falling consumer confidence, lower economic growth and slowing retail sales of clothing. As a result, demand for clothing declined for all fibres, resulting in lower textile fibre demand and the wool textile industry becoming nervous and less optimistic. Cotton prices, which helped to push fibre prices to new heights, declined sharply, resulting in a fall in synthetic fibre prices and wool becoming less competitive. Raw wool demand also decreased in the second half of Regarding the prospects for 2012, Wilcox said there were various factors that would play a role. On the one end of the scale the factors supporting the market are: l Low wool production and supply, particularly in the medium Merino fleece range. l A trend towards natural fibres and wool. l Signs of a recovery in the US economy. l Consumer confidence was recovering slowly. l Interest at trade fairs for Autumn/ Winter 2012 was "stable". l Low stocks in the textile pipeline. On the other end of the scale the factors having a negative influence on the wool industry, are: l The recession in Europe. l A slow-down in China's economic growth. l Apparel retail sales showing signs of flagging. l Wool prices in US dollar terms are at an historical high. l Wool is currently less competitive because of high prices. l The impact the higher fibre prices on retail sales. l The weakening of raw wool demand. Wilcox said there were several factors that could have an impact on the market in The first was how long the market would continue to be supply-driven. Due to low stocks and low production, it had up to recently been largely driven by supply concerns. Another factor was the changing flock structure in response to the high prices for sheep meat, he said. This has already changed the micron profile of the Australian clip, with more broader wools coming onto the market. There has also been a significant shift away from pure wool to mutton breeds in South America. A major factor was government debt in Europe and in the US, Wilcox said. Also crucial to wool's future was whether retailers and consumers would accept the higher clothing and interior textile prices. "More importantly, will wool lose out to other, cheaper fibres?" Wilcox asked. 2 May 2012 Wolboer/Wool Farmer P. 3 Research in Australia something South Africa can only dream of Four NWGA members earlier this year undertook a study tour to Australia to learn more about the wool industry, research and development. They were Leon de Beer (manager), Guillau du Toit (national vice-chairman), Le Roux Fourie (chairman of the Free State NWGA) and Gawie van Wyk (wool production adviser, Northern Cape). In this issue Gillau du Toit and Le Roux Fourie tell more about their experiences. The time, effort and money that Australia makes available for agricultural research is undeniably impressive. It is an achievement that South Africa can only dream of. Australian agricultural research is conducted according to the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) guide to good governance which means that funds and expertise are coordinated according to specific principles with research results that should ultimately be beneficial to the industry as a whole. Research The sheep CRC research was motivated by the decline in the Australian sheep flock to around 70 million heads at present. The reduced supply and strong demand for lamb and sheep meat has led to record prices for both lamb and mutton. These high prices are attractive for producers wishing to cash in their sheep and this is considered to be an important factor contributing to the continued decline in numbers. Research was deemed to be necessary in order for the industry to increase profits and cut losses. The Sheep CRC currently researches the transformation of sheep that produce meat and wool. Research activities are conducted within four programmes covering sheep reproduction, wool, meat and genetics. It is not possible to report here on all aspects of these studies, but I want to give a short overview of the projects that fascinated me. Nucleus programme The CRC Information Nucleus programme delivers benefits and provides a platform for improved genetic gains. Research has produced data indicating that lamb meat was second only to fish in supplying the essential Omega-3 fatty acids in the Australian diet. Then there is the genomic pilot project to deliver genomic predictions of breeding values for young commercial rams by using DNA results. This project involves about 150 breeders who entered more than 350 young rams for the project. Breeding values of a ram will then be known at a very early stage and the long wait for progeny tests will no longer be necessary. A hypothesis that a by-product of skin bacteria may influence the colour of wool is being tested. This project will determine if wool whiteness can be improved by controlling the bacteria population on sheep. Reproduction Reproduction efficiency is another focus that draws much attention. Scanning and data analysis of lamb survival (such as lamb ease, birth coat score, time taken to bleat, rectal temperature and crown rump length) has been completed. Adding the above-mentioned as indirect selection criteria over the lifetime of a ewe may improve lamb survival by more than 50%. Another project is aimed at developing practical and sustainable target treatments to ensure Bo: Die vier manne wat Australië onlangs besoek het kyk na die wol van skape op n plaas naby Katanning, Wes-Australië. Op dié plaas van ha word met skape geboer. that resistant worms do not become dominant in their population. Since certain sheep perform better with supplement feeding than others, a project to determine the reason for this difference in performance has been launched. For the study sheep are kept in different sheds, are given a maintenance ration and are weighed regularly. Weight Some sheep maintain their weight, others lose it while some gain weight. The study aims to identify the reason for this phenomenon. In two years time we will hopefully know what selection to make for farming with sheep that can perform better on less feed. A lot of research is also undertaken in respect of meat, such as the consumption quality of the meat of certain breeding types. Two cuts, loin and topside, are taken from 1500 lambs. Consumers will evaluate the eating quality of the meat. This will yield new information about consumer acceptance of loin and topside cuts across the full range of sheep CRC genetics. Tenderness and the ph of meat will also be investigated. The ph has a definite effect on the colour of meat and the electric stimulation systems installed in some of the abattoirs influence the ph level. Brandstofpryse Brandstofpryse is op min of meer dieselfde vlakke as in Suid Afrika.

Wol is tans meer as ses keer duurder as katoen en meer as vyf keer duurder as kunsvesels. I am aiming at 90, was sy eerste woorde aan Izak. Chips Reid gesê you must grease it a bit en sonder uitsondering is die spyker dan ingemoker. "Wat Chips tydens my besoek gesê het wat my bybly is: If I can do it over, I will do it again! 4 June 2012 Wolboer/Wool Farmer P. 5 Drop in exports to major wool processing countries The 2011/12 season to date has seen a decrease in wool exports to all major processing countries, with mills remaining cautious as they wait for orders from retailers for autumn/winter 2012 in the Northern Hemisphere. According to the latest issue of Landmark's Wool Economic Focus, mills may continue to hold back on raw wool buying in the coming months. Trade data The latest trade data show that total wool imports from the five major wool-exporting countries (Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Uruguay and South Africa) has fallen by 11% in the first eight months of 2011/12 (July to February). All destinations have recorded declines, although the largest falls have been seen in imports by countries in Europe. In total, imports by Europe have fallen by 19%, with sharp falls in imports by Germany, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom. Italy s imports have also fallen (by 9%), reversing the gains of 2010/11. China s imports have fallen by only 6%, the smallest decline of all major wool processing countries (see fig. 1). As a result, for the 2011/12 season to date, China has increased its share of wool exports from the five major exporting countries to 58%, an increase from 56% in the 2010/11 season. India It is, however, lower than the 60% share it held in the 2009/10 season. India, the third largest single export destination, has seen its imports fall by 16% this season. This is a sharp decline after it had largely maintained its imports in 2010/11. One reason for the decline in imports by the major processing countries is that demand conditions within the global wool textile industry remain highly uncertain. Concerns are concentrated on the problems in Europe, where the highly volatile financial situation has quietened, but recession looms in many European countries in 2012, notably in Italy. As a result of this huge volatility over the past six months, retailers have been very cautious. Orders from retailers are reported to have been lower than a year earlier over recent months. Limited supply A second reason for the lower volume of imports by the major processing countries is that wool production and supply is very limited. Wool production in most of the major exporting countries is down this season and there are minimal stocks held by growers after a sell-off last season. This will mean wool trade volumes will inevitably be down. Belangrikste wolinvoerlande Indië Brittanje China Mkg greasy equivalent Fig. 1 Wool imports by major processing countries (Season to February for 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12) China -6% Wool prices As a result, wool prices have been maintained and the value of wool exports from the major exporters has increased this season in local currency terms. There are signs, however, that the value of exports is beginning to soften. Mills are holding back on raw wool purchases, only buying when they require wool as they wait on orders from retailers. Orders for the autumn/winter season, which typically start being placed in March, are reported to have been delayed. This may bring weaker demand for raw wool in coming months. Daar is n hele paar redes hiervoor.

5 Bl. 4 Wolboer/Wool Farmer Junie 2012 International Wool Textile Organisation congress, New York Production forecasts for the five major exporting countries Figure 1 Production in most of the five major wool exporting countries is expected to be down in the 2011/'12 season, according to the grower country reports submitted to the International Wool Textile Organisation's congress held in New York last month. Australia The exception is Australia, where production was initially expected to increase slightly, but has been revised downward to 345 million kg, unchanged from last season. This is because fleece weights did not increase as much as was expected. The shift to dual-purpose sheep is continuing, but is based on Merino ewes. Conditions Australia has experienced generally good seasonal conditions in the eastern and southern parts while Western Australia is recovering from drought. The micron profile has seen an increase in fine merino (19,5 Expected production for 2011/12 (million kg) Australia 345 New Zealand 148 Argentina 47 South Africa 45 Uruguay 33 micron and finer) and crossbred wool (stronger than 24,6 micron) but a decline in medium Merino wool. Argentina's wool production for 2011/12 had initially been forecast at 53 million kg, but also had to be revised downwards to 47 million kg, mainly due to continuing poor weather in Patagonia, where about 60% of the clip is produced, coupled with ashes from the Puyehue volcano eruption. Volcanic ash It is feared that up to a million sheep could die as a result of the ash, which not only blanketed large tracks of grazing land, but also covered the sheep. It is still early for predictions, but if the poor weather conditions persist another downward revision in Argentina's production may be needed. Production of apparel wool remains at 55% finer than 25 micron. New Zealand New Zealand's production for 2011/'12 is estimated at 148 million kg, down 2% on last season due to a 4% drop in sheep numbers. Uruguay's production has also fallen to its lowest level in decades, following an 11% drop in 2010/'11. Seasonal conditions are very good and wool production is expected to remain steady in 2011/12. Wool less competitive after sharp decline in cotton prices The sharp decline in cotton prices and resultant fall in synthetic fibre prices, have eroded wool's competitiveness. The wool-to-cotton and the wool-to-synthetic price ratios currently are both well above the average for the past 10 years. The wool to cotton price ratio has increased and at end April wool was more than six times the price of cotton. The 10-year average is 4,6 (see graph below). The wool-to-synthetic price ratio is also well above the 10 year average of 3,7. Wool is currently more than five times the price of synthetic fibres. Wool s poor price competitiveness against other fibres will be an important factor in wool demand in the coming months. The fact that other fibres are priced more favourably than wool could lead to increased use of these more competitive fibres in place of wool. Wool's price competitiveness US$ terms Predators, rustling and lack of trained and untrained labour are major issues for Uruguayan sheep farmers. The high wool and sheep prices, however, are encouraging wool producers to rebuild their wool flocks, which could see production increasing to 35 million kg in 2012/'13 from the current 33 million kg. South Africa's production is also expected to fall to around 45 million kg from last season's 46,1 million kg, despite generally good climatic conditions. The overall forecast is for world supply to remain low, while stocks will remain limited (see figure 1). The International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) last month held its congress in New York. A delegation from South Africa, including NWGA national chairman Harry Prinsloo, attended the event. IWTO is the only international and genuinely independent organisation that is the custodian of world wool trade regulations. The mission of IWTO is to represent and support the wool industry members by advocating the use of wool in all possible end-uses whilst providing a forum to network and a platform to discuss wool industry strategy. The National Woolgrowers' Association (NWGA) would like to thank Voermol for its sponsorship towards the flights and accommodation of the NGWA delegation that attended the IWTO congress in New York. Data to 2013 as a forecast Retailers and designers get back in touch Woolmark International and the Women s Wear Daily (WWD) have connected retailers and designers with wool as part of the 2012 Fashion and Retail Market Report, What s Working Now and Why. The report provided insight into future market opportunities, giving US retailers and designers a greater understanding of the versatility of this natural fibre for the US market. Retailers Over 280 retailers attended the presentation including DKNY, Polo, Ralph Lauren and Gap Inc. AWI/Woolmark CEO, Stuart Mc- Cullough said: We are very pleased to partner with such a significant publication such as WWD on the Fashion and Retail Market Report. "Together, we are working to inspire and educate those in the industry to incorporate natural fi- bres in their products and why it s beneficial to do so. We feel it is important that everyone involved in the creation of today s top apparel is working together towards exciting consumers and providing them with the highest quality products and the best possible buying experience. This year s IWTO Congress was organised together with the American Sheep Industry and included various presentations from Australian Wool Innovation (AWI). Sleep studies University sleep studies showing how people sleep better with wool, the success of the global Campaign for Wool, the Woolmark Apparel Care program, Mother and Babies programme and new technology to help protect the Woolmark, were among the topics discussed. LONDON Marks & Spencer (M&S), the British retailer, says it will create a new, more sustainable closed loop business model where its customers hand over old or unwanted garments whenever they buy a new one. (M&S) is headquartered in London and has over 700 stores in the United Kingdom and over 300 stores spread across more than 40 countries. The move comes in a bid to stop around 1 billion items of clothing and textiles going to landfill in the UK each year. Shwopping The retailer is calling its new concept "shwopping", which head of sustainable business Mike Barry says is a way of making the consumption of clothes much more sustainable than it is today. The move is part of M&S's Plan A initiative first launched back in 2007, which will now be fronted by wellknown celebrity Joanna Lumley who will become the face of Plan A. After five years of hard work on 180 social and environmental commitments we are now ready to put our 21 million customers at the centre of our sustainability journey, continued Barry. 'Shwopping' will see us extend the great partnership we have developed with Oxfam to encourage the donation of used clothing in their shops so that our customers can also donate used clothing any day of the year in our 342 UK clothing stores, he said. All the clothing we collect will still go to Oxfam for re-sale, reuse or recycling to raise money for their vital work around the world Aussie woolgrowers to go to the polls to vote on levy rate THE Australian Woolgrowers Association (AWGA) is calling for Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) to immediately release its threeyear spending projections to give farmers ample time to make an informed decision on which levy rate to support in the Wool Poll. Australian wool growers will go to the polls in November this year to determine the rate of wool levy. Wool growers must pay a levy on the sale price they receive for shorn greasy wool. This levy provides funding for the wool industry services body, AWI Ltd, and is invested in research and development, marketing, and innovation activities for the direct benefit of Australian wool growers. Current rate The current levy rate is two per cent and is collected by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Levies Revenue Service, which is responsible for administering, collecting and disbursing levies on behalf of industries. In accordance with the Wool Services Privatisation Act 2000, AWI must conduct a poll of all eligible wool-levy payers every three years to determine the rate of the levy to apply for the following three-year period. AWI must then make a recommendation to the minister in accordance with the outcome of the poll. AWGA acting chairman Shane Edwards said AWI needed to declare how much money each of the levy options set at 0 per cent, 1pc, 2pc, 2,5pc and 3pc - would raise, and how it would be spent. AWGA also wanted growers to vote on how levy money was divided between marketing and research and development. Information At the moment, AWI is not forthcoming enough with information, he said. We want the projections now, not the week before the Wool Poll road show. AWI has about $100m in cash reserves and still has a problem expending all the money. By 2013, could they have $150m in reserve? We are in danger of having a new stockpile of funds. AWI has said they are happy for stakeholders to debate the figure, but AWI must be part of the debate. In a statement to Fairfax Agricultural Media, an AWI spokesperson said the organisation s audited reserves were A$95,6-million, as published in the 2010/'11 annual report. That number would grow modestly before the end of the financial year but should also have the Woolmark brand (A$10m) intangible asset deducted. However it is important to note AWI is obliged to hold a certain level of reserves (A$37,4m) for a potential exotic disease response and to expedite an orderly closure of the company including projects and operating costs should a 0% levy vote be returned at Wool Poll, the spokesperson said. Deductions These deductions are well documented in every AWI annual report provided to all shareholders. The amount held in AWI s reserves was determined by its board. A drawing down on reserves had been budgeted for in 2010/'11 and 2011/'12, but not because of higher wool prices and subsequent growth in the levy revenue figures received. Hand in your old clothes as you shop for new ones The board will provide a clear position on the company s expenditure of its expected annual revenue and reserves for 2013/'14 to 2015/'16 as part of the Wool- Poll, the spokesperson said. He said it was of paramount importance to the company that there was an orderly growth in project expenditure over the next three years. The first wool levy poll was held in 2000 and growers representing over 50 per cent of the national clip voted. The majority vote at this wool poll was for a levy rate of 2 per cent. Woolgrowers voted in favour of the 2 per cent levy again in the 2003, 2006 and 2009 wool polls and, as such, this rate is still in place. With the first meeting of the independent Wool Poll panel last month, the panel endorsed the proposed levy rates to be voted on at Wool Poll 2012: 0 per cent 1,0 per cent, 2,0 per cent, 2,5 to tackle poverty. M&S has estimated that around 1 billion items of clothing go to landfill in the UK each year. That s one in every four garments sold every year or items per hour. It s too much especially when virtually every item could be re-used or recycled in some way, he added. Similar schemes have already been seen on the UK high street, with retailer TK Maxx and Cancer Research UK partnering on a clothing take-back program in a bid to raise in excess of 2.5m to help the charity beat children's cancer. Consumption This latest step by M&S now puts consumption at the heart of the sustainability debate. In addition to its own commitments it is currently working on in its supply chain. Analysts say it will be interesting to see what happens to the collected clothes. Will they be broken down, fully recycled and the fabrics used to make new clothing sold in the UK. Or will they simply shipped offshore to consumers in developing economies? Ecotextile News Higher oil prices will push up prices of polyester Higher oil prices will push up prices of polyester according to the report released by Australian Wool Innovation (AWI). Polyester is often blended with wool in the production of woven wear, mainly suits and coats. Polyester is produced primarily using purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG), which is generally derived from crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Statistically identified, there is a strong correlation (85%) between the price of oil and price of polyester, and there is a lagged effect of three months (it takes roughly three months for an oil price change to cause polyester prices to move in the similar direction). However, recently polyester prices have tracked closely to the oil price movements, in effect shortening the lagged effect of oil price on polyester prices. First poll took place in 2000 per cent or 3,0 per cent. The five proposed levy rates are the same options presented to woolgrowers in Wool Poll 2003, 2006 and A key role for the 2012 Wool- Poll panel is to maximise voter turnout, drawing on their extensive networks with woolgrowers across Australia. Wool Poll panel chairman Will Roberts said the panel will work hard to ensure that woolgrowers across Australia participate in this important decision about the future research, development and marketing funding for their industry."

The organisation was mainly concerned about proposals in the bill that important functions relating to the protection and management of agricultural land would be exercised at municipal level. Nedlac The bill was sent to the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) and a first informal meeting between government, trade unions and business took place on 22 June Another four meetings took place between October 2011 and mid-april Agri SA and the Agricultural Business Chamber have insisted that special consideration be given to prime and unique agricultural land in the drafting of spatial development frameworks. Agri SA sê in n verklaring dat hy die Konstitusionele Hof se uitspraak verwelkom dat mynregte onderhewig is aan ordonansies wat gebruiksbeplanning reguleer omdat dit plaaslike owerhede die geleentheid sal bied om ander oorwegings as One of the development principles that underpin the bill is to ensure special consideration is given to the protection of prime and unique agricultural land. The report is currently being finalized in Nedlac. The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has however sought Cabinet approval for the bill whilst the Nedlac process is still on-going. The business delegation has objected to this. Parliament The Nedlac report will still be tabled in Parliament. There is a deadline for the acceptance of the legislation, which was set by the Constitutional Court when it declared parts of the Development Facilitation Act unconstitutional in the case of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality versus Gauteng Development Tribunal and Others. The deadline expires on 18 June It is likely that the relevant parliamentary committees will call for public hearings on the bill when it comes before them. Agri SA said it would remain part of the process of finalising this Bill.

Vraag: Wie mag veemiddels verkoop, adverteer of bemark? Vraag: Wat mag op so 'n advertensie verskyn? Vraag: Bestaan daar vasgestelde uitgangspryse? Antwoord: Nee. Antwoord: Vir meer inligting oor Wet 36 van 1947 en Wet 101 van 1965 besoek die volgende webtuiste: Japanese retailer joins mulesing ban ANOTHER international retailer, Japanese company Muji, will phase out Australian wool from mulesed sheep before its 2013 winter line is released. Muji has 200 stores and supplies another 127. It operates in 20 countries and has an annual turnover of US$1,7 billion. The announcement follows lobbying by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). PETA Australia campaigns director Jason Baker said Muji had joined retailers Hugo Boss, H&M, Abercrombie & Fitch and Country Road in moving away from mulesed wool. Australian Wool Producers chief executive Jane Brownbill said the Australian wool industry was "working hard" to find a viable and effective alternative to mulesing. -Farmonline Kashmiri scientists clone rare cashmere goat SCIENTISTS say they have cloned a rare Himalayan goat in Indiancontrolled Kashmir, hoping to help increase the number of animals famed for their silky soft undercoats used to make pashmina "wool". A cashmere goat is characterized by a fine underdown (fleece), which is naturally shed every year in April/May. The birth last month of the female kid "Noori", which means "light" in Arabic, could spark breeding programmes across the region and mass production of the high-priced cashmere fleece, said lead project scientist Riaz Ahmad Shah, a veterinarian in the animal biotechnology centre of Sher-i- Kashmir University. Cashmere fleece, particularly made into shawls, is a major source of income for Kashmir, generating about $US80 million a year for the Indian-controlled portion of the disputed mountain state. Cashmere and wool a popular blend Cashmere fibre, which is often blended with superfine wools for the manufacture of highquality garments, is often called pashmina which refers to a type of cashmere wool and textiles made from cashmere. It is derived from the Persian word "Pashmineh", which means "wool". The woollen shawls made in Kashmir are mentioned in Afghan texts between 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD Cashmere goats are combed every spring and their fleece (not their hair) processed for spinning and weaving. One goat yields approximately g of fleece. For hundreds of years, cashmere shawls have been manufactured in Kashmir and Nepal, but these days also in other parts of the world. The Textile Exchange has published a guide which aims to draw attention to the growing quantity of textile waste generated each year in North America and the UK. The Textile Exchange is a global, non-profit, membershipbased organization that began as the Organic Exchange in The organisation is committed to accelerating sustainable practices in the textile value chain in order to create material change, restore the environment, and enhance lives around the world. The Fast Facts guide on Textile and Product Waste provides those in the industry with an overview of the key facts and statistics about waste, recycling and consumption. A shawl can cost $US200 in Kashmir and much more when sold abroad - a boon given the average salary of $US800 a year for Kashmir's 10,2 million people. Cashmere goats which take their name from the Kashmir region but include a number of breeds that produce the soft underdown are traditionally herded in small numbers across the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau in cold and remote mountain areas and the Ladakh region of Kashmir. Harsh climate They must live in harsh, windy climates to generate the soft undercoat, for which demand has always exceeded supply. They survive on alpine pastures between m and m altitude, are very robust enduring temperatures ranging from 30 degrees C to minus 30 degrees C. Experts say their numbers are dwindling. In recent years, Kashmir has started importing cashmere from neighbouring China to keep up with orders for the region's hand-woven shawls. Shah and six other scientists took two years to clone Noori, using the The figures suggest that more than 12 million tons of textile waste is generated in North America and one million tons in the UK alone every year. In addition, the guide claims it is estimated that 10-20% of all textiles in the fashion industry is wasted, while 15% of fabric intended for clothing ends up on the cutting room floor. There is also a who s who guide to waste and recycling and a look at what brands are doing to combat the problem. Examples used include Klattermusen in Sweden, which has launched the programme recover that allows its used products to be returned to retailers, for cash. relatively new "handmade" cloning technique involving only a microscope and a steady hand. "We've standardised the procedure. Now it will take us half a year to produce another," said Maajid Hassan, another veterinarian who worked on the project, which was partly funded by the World Bank. The team has started work on more clones among the university's herd of goats. Cheapest method "This is the cheapest, easier and less time-consuming"method of cloning compared with conventional methods that use high-tech machinery and sometimes chemicals," Shah said. Noori is the first Cashmere goat cloned by this method, although Shah earlier cloned a buffalo. 9 Bl. 8 Wolboer/Wool Farmer Mei 2012 Aussie Merino breeders are unhappy about AWI's decision to withdraw funding for the programme aimed at accelerating genetic improvement. Funding for Aussie Information Nucleus programme withdrawn Australian wool industry groups have heaped pressure on Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) to reverse its decision to withdraw funding support for the Information Nucleus Flock programme. Over recent months the ewe Information Nucleus Flock, managed by participants in the Co-operative Research Centre for Sheep Industry Innovation (Sheep CRC) at nine different sites around Australia, has encountered flooding on some properties, with dry weather and full supplementary feeding on others. The Information Nucleus programme aims to dramatically accelerate the rate of genetic improvement in Australia s sheep flocks to improve productivity and increase profits. The programme, started in 2007, is managed by the Sheep CRC, and funded by AWI, Meat & Livestock Australia and the Australian Meat Processors Corporation. It provides data for Australian Sheep Breeding Values used by more than 70% of terminal and maternal ram breeders but only 30% of Merino ram breeders. The Information Nucleus is the engine room for sheep genetic research in Australia, underpinning the acceleration in genetic improvement in the national flock, Sheep CRC chief executive Professor James Rowe said earlier. Genetic improvement It is estimated that with genomic information currently available it is possible to increase the rate of genetic improvement by over seven per cent in meat breeds and by around 20% for Merinos. But in assessing the genetic merits of the flock it is important that we also take into consideration the extremes of the environment which producers face each season on their farms around Australia," Prof Rowe said. Last month, however, AWI announced that it would not fund the second phase of the programme because of a lack of a commercialisation focus making the science practical for the industry - in the Sheep CRC's business plan to the organisation. But Wool Producers Australia is urging AWI to reconsider support for the programme because it believes it holds significant financial benefits for wool growers. Retain the flock "We strongly believe the nucleus flock should be retained," WPA president Geoff Power said. "We are asking the question, if there is something wrong with the business plan, what can we do to fix it." Mr Power said while it was up to individual producers to take on the data generated through the project, enough research had to be done to ensure there was solid information to be commercialised. Research is vital Australian Superfine Wool Growers Association president Helen Cathles said members supported the programme s continuation once the Sheep CRC handed it over to industry in 2014 and would investigate how it could happen. Genetic research is vital to the future of superfine wool producers and the sheep industry as a whole, Mrs Cathles said. Embracing the research being conducted by the Sheep CRC is a high priority for our membership, as it offers new solutions to improve on-farm operations and their business bottom line. The Victorian Farmers Federation has written to AWI seeking advice on why the project was not accepted and what the board would require for it to be funded. It is believed the AWI board considered it at its meeting last month.

Researching the effect of supplementation during overnight kraaling The Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute (GADI), Middelburg (Eastern Cape), Molatek and Dudumashe farmers have joined hands to investigate the effect of supplementation of sheep during overnight kraaling. The product, Master 20 (Molatek), a protein-mineral-energy supplement, will be fed during overnight kraaling to communal sheep in the Dudumashe community through the dry winter period of Mr Bryan King, Research technician (GADI) and Mr Zet Wapi, Manager: New Business at Molatek, are responsible for the project. Natural pastures Currently there are about 24 million sheep in South Africa with an estimated three to four million in the former Transkei and Ciskei. Most of the natural pastures of the former Transkei are described as Dohne sourveld. One of the main characteristics of this veld type is that it provides good spring and summer grazing but is far less satisfactory than sweetveld in the autumn and winter. The protein content of the sourveld declines drastically after the first autumn frost and can reach a low of 2,5 percent. Adding to this problem is the fact that the farmers burn their grazing pastures to stimulate grass growth, resulting in the ewes starting to cycle and getting mated during the mid-summer, depending on the rainfall. These ewes then lamb during the months of May to August, resulting in poor lamb survival. Energy, protein and trace mineral supplementation of small stock is a common practice in commercial livestock flocks throughout South Africa. However, the supplementation of livestock by communal farmers in the Eastern Cape province is a relatively new concept. Objectives The objectives of this project are to: Determine the effect of supplementation for reproducing ewes on milk production and production and composition Determine the effect of supplementation on the growth rate of lambs and lamb survival. Determine the effect of supplementation for young lambs, weathers and rams on body condition score and growth rate Use the results of this study to give sound advice to rural sheep producers on the feeding of supplements. Safety and health in the shearing shed discussed DEVELOPING an action plan to tackle wool harvesting health and safety issues was top of the agenda at last month s Shearharvest 2012 conference in Australia. More than 150 shearing contractors and wool-harvesting stakeholders gathered on the Australian Gold Coast, the largest gathering of its kind in the world. It is co-organised by the Shearing Contractors' Association of Australia and the New Zealand Shearing Contractors Association and held biennially, alternating between the two countries. Health and safety SCAA secretary Jason Letchford said a health and safety plan for the shearing industry would outline how the association planned to tackle safety issues, such as liaising with key stakeholders including farmers and equipment manufacturers to improve work conditions. He said shearing shed noise was one of the key issues for discussion in developing the health and safety issues action plan. "Every shearing shed that has been anecdotally tested, or in New Zealand has been scientifically tested, has failed in terms of the maximum amount of decibels workers should be exposed to over the longer term," Mr Letchford said. "It's actions such as, do we issue protective hearing equipment to everyone and is that at a contractor or farm level or at an individual's level, that were discussed." The plan would also involve providing feedback from their members to manufacturers on the demand for quieter equipment, which could create a point of difference in products offered by companies. Improve conditions Mr Letchford said the association was still encouraging farmers to improve conditions in shearing sheds, particularly with increased competition for labour from the mining industry. The conference provides information to shearing contractors as small business managers, on industrial relations, workplace health and safety, training, the economy, industry projections, superannuation and time and human resources management. Me. Me. New anti-shrink wool top that is softer and whiter BWHK (Bremer Wollhandelskontor GmbH) has recently introduced a totally new product E- TEC Non-chlorinated Anti-Shrink Wool Tops. The product is IMO/GOTS Certified and is exclusive to BWHK. It results in a softer touch compared with conventional treatments and is odour free. The treatment also results in a brilliant white, superior colour compared with conventional treatments and superior nepp characteristics and is anti-shrink to TM31 Standards, says Jens Behrmann of BWHK. Organic wool The BWHK team has been involved in the development of organic wool for nearly two decades. They have pioneered the promotion of certified organic tops and E-TEC non-chlorinated anti-shrink treatment and are at the forefront of organic processing. This is wool that has been processed and or transformed in accordance with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS- Version 2.0 or subsequent). The product must be pure wool as defined by GOTS or by local legislation. All processors in the production chain must be certified by an IFOAM accredited or internationally recognised (according to ISO Guide 65) certifier and must meet the trade waste requirements of the local environmental control authority. BWHK has been developing and promoting an organic certified wool chain from wool growing, processing, and labelling. Wool processors using this chain will be able to certify their product with one certification that will be accepted by all major markets. In order for the final product to certify as an organic wool product it is necessary for all processing stages from the sheep s back to the garment to be adhered to and certified accordingly, says Behrmann. aan die mynbedryf beskikbaar te stel. Agri SA dicusses way forward with land reform The management committee of Agri SA s Transformation Committee last month met the directorgeneral of the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform and the Restitution Commission in Pretoria. Agri SA requested the meeting to talk about a way forward with restitution. The restitution process has been dragging on for some 18 years and the uncertainty caused by the outstanding claims have had material negative consequences on investment in the agricultural sector. Dr Theo de Jager put it to the meeting that whole industries, such as the tea and coffee indus- Mineraleregte: uitspraak word afgewag try, have been lost partly because of the fact that restitution has been dragging on for so long. Restitution also impacts on redistribution and black empowerment through AgriBEE. Agri SA was concerned that there was no clear direction within the Department on a way forward with restitution. Green Paper The Green Paper has little to say about the future of restitution. The director-general assured the Agri SA delegation however that restitution was once again a priority. A new chief land claims commissioner, Ms Gobodo, has been appointed together with a few new staff members. Universities will be approached to assist with the research of outstanding claims and the restitution budget has been boosted by R1-billion. There are outstanding claims at present. A new strategy for restitution was being formulated and once internal discussion on it has been finalized, the department will engage stakeholders, such as Agri SA s on it. The director-general further stated that they are looking at setting up alternate dispute resolution structures. A new unit has been created that will focus on social facilitation.

12 June 2012 Wolboer/Wool Farmer P. 13 Australians call for national approach to control wild dogs Sheep killed by wild dogs. These animals are now regarded as the largest threat to the wool industry. Australian farmers are calling for a national approach to help control wild dogs, now seen as the largest threat to Australia's sheep and wool industry. Rising numbers of wild dogs killing sheep are dampening forecasts for an increase in the national flock and wool production, prompting industry lobby group, WoolProducers Australia, to call on governments to back an urgent national approach with more resources to get the rampant dog population in check. But the Federal Government insists wild dogs are not a Commonwealth concern, but instead a matter for State and territory governments, and ultimately landholders. WoolProducers Australia's Geoff Power said there was not a single state that could claim it did not have a problem, with dogs found throughout the NSW Great Dividing Range regions, Victoria s High Country, SA s northern Flinders, and several areas of Queensland and WA. New bait with an antidote soon available A NEW bait for wild dogs - with an antidote - could soon be available to farmers to use in the battle against wild dogs and foxes. Known as p-aminopropiophenone, or PAPP for short, the bait has been in the pipeline since Last month the application for the bait to be registered was submitted to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA). Invasive Animals Co-operative Research Centre (IACRC) chair Helen Cathles said PAPP was a humane way to kill wild dogs and had an antidote, as opposed to Long time "It has taken a long time; much longer than anyone anticipated it would," she said. "Wild dogs are out there - they ll always be out there - and we need better technologies to outsmart them. "We need to continue the research. "There are many families that have lost their livelihoods due to the impact of wild dogs. "There are hundreds of thousands of acres across Australia which are out of wool production because of the impact of wild dogs." Mrs Cathles said PAPP was not designed to replace 1080, rather to be used in conjunction with it and other control programs. "We need to be able to fill the gaps," she said. "A lot of people won t use 1080 because they ve had experiences with their working dogs picking up their baits and dying. "PAPP can be taken up by those people because there is an antidote." Simon Humphrys is one of the scientists behind the development of the PAPP fox and wild dog baits, and he said the chemical was first looked at in the 1940s and 50s as an antidote for cyanide poisoning in the military. Administered to people "It was actually thought that it would be administered to people," he said. "In generating the toxicological data that would be required - before it could be administered to a person - they did quite a bit of work on rodents and dogs. "Dogs were particularly sensitive to the motor action of the chemical." Dr Humphrys said the chemical oxidised the animals haemoglobin so as it could not carry oxygen "We are really ramping up the program trying to control wild dogs but it s not enough. We need more, Mr Power said. "We need more support for a national approach because it is a national problem. "Where people have switched to cattle and there are no sheep left, they are getting calf predation and then those heifers and steers with scars get discounted at market. "We ll get a slight increase in wool production but we won t get the increase that we need because of dog predation. Threats National Wild Dog Advisory Group facilitator Greg Mifsud said there was no equality in funding for the threat of invertebrate pests compared with other threats to agricultural productivity, such as weeds. Funding for programmes to tackle weeds of national significance was continual over 10 years but wild dog funding a threat that had the potential to push farmers out of sheep production did not have the same guarantee. Mr Mifsud said there were still some producers who did not believe there was a wild dog problem on their property. It only takes a few producers to (take that attitude) and we get back to square one pretty quickly. It s everyone s issue and everyone needs to be involved. Egypt requires certificate The Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry (MFTI) has issued a ministerial decree requiring an inspection certificate for imported textile and leather goods. Shipments must be inspected and certified by an ISO recognized body. This regulation came into effect in April The significant increase in textile product exports and the newly enforced inspection certificate requirement for imported textile and leather products has created an increased demand for consumer products testing services in the region. Egypt is among the top ten export destinations for South African wool. From July 2011 to March this year, kg grease wool was shipped to Egypt. The Egyptian apparel industry is attractive for its proximity to European markets, whose rapidly changing fashions require quick replenishment. Secondly, the production of garments is a low-capital and high-labour intensive industry, and the local population of 66 million provides a ready workforce as well as a natural local consumer market that acts as a springboard for exports. Spesifiseer hoeveel vee gesteel of vermis is. This resulted in five million computer entries and more than sheep having their DNA tested for identifiable gene sequences at the end. Reliable genetics The aim, for the nucleus flock, was not to breed super animals or to become a top stud with the best rams, but to build reliable and accurate genetics information that meat producers and woolgrowers could use to advance their flocks. Professor Rowe has estimated farmers can achieve an extra A$2 a year in meat and wool returns for every breeding ewe in their flock if they use the system effectively. The research has also now resulted in a DNA test becoming available to commercial farmers at A$130 a sheep. 11,1 micron bale wins Loro Piana Cup Challenge An Australian woolgrower won the Loro Piana Challenge Cup for a 11,1 micron bale wool. 15 Bl. 14 Wolboer/Wool Farmer Junie 2012 Aussie wool production down, but sheep numbers may increase Australian sheep numbers are expected to reach 77,4 million head in 2012/ 13, according to the latest national clip forecast. But despite a predicted lift of 3 million, or 4,2 per cent, the Australian Wool Production Forecasting Committee is expecting only a small increase of 1,4 per cent in the clip to 350 million kilograms equal to almost two million bales. Committee chairman Russell Pattinson said the projected sheep numbers were based on a survey of producer intentions conducted by Australian Wool Innovation and Meat and Livestock Australia in February. "We have no reason to doubt the intentions, but whether or not they translate into actual numbers remains to be seen," Pattinson said. The committee is forecasting that 80,5 million sheep, or 2,6 million more than last year, will be shorn next year. For the 2011/ 12 season the committee left the clip unchanged at 345 million kilograms, although in August the forecast was considerably higher at 355 million kilograms. Gains in production across South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania had been negated by falls in Western Australia and Queensland, with steady production in New South Wales. Testing data The trend has been confirmed by the latest Australian Wool Testing Authority's testing data for the 10 months to the end of April, which shows 2,8 per cent, or about fewer bales, have been tested compared with the same period in 2010/'11. Pattinson said lower-than-expected fleece weights were partly to blame for the slightly reduced forecast, although the number of sheep shorn has not risen by as much as the lift in opening sheep numbers. Fleece weights Pattinson said fleece weights were anticipated to remain stable. "While many parts of the country are experiencing good seasons, the committee is concerned about the autumn outlook for parts of Tasmania, South Australia and Victoria," he said. "From what we gather, West Australian sheep numbers appear to have steadied." Processors and manufacturers hoping for a lift in global raw wool supplies are expected to be disappointed. Industry consultant and secretary of the National Council of Wool Selling Brokers, Chris Wilcox, said global supplies remained very tight owing partly to high prices for sheep meat. Hungary has Merino wool for sale The Hungarian export company Hungarowool says it has 100% Hungarian Merino wool for sale. According to company director János Vass the wool this year is of good quality and is off-white in colour. The wool on offer is between microns. All lots come with IWTO Certification. Wool is grown in Hungary by local farmers running small Merino flocks, usually between head. There are larger farms that operate with some head. These sheep are kept in sheds for some three months each year, due to the harsh winters in Hungary, which protects the quality of the wool from weather damage but does not affect the colour.

SPCA warns against grinding sheep teeth The National Council of the SPCA (NSPCA) in South Africa has warned wool growers that it would not hesitate to lay charges against any farmer commencing the practice of grinding sheep teeth. This is in response to an article publised in the December/ January 2012 issue of the Wool Farmer describing how some Australian farmers grind older sheep's teeth because they believe it increases the sheep's productivity. In a letter to NWGA manager Mr Leon de Beer, Ms Celeste Houseman, manager of the Farm Animal Unit of the NSPCA, writes: " We believe that this procedure is avoidable and would cause unnecessary suffering. Animal Protection Act "Furthermore, we are of the firm opinion that it would be a contravention of the Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962 (APA). "Should this practice commence in South Africa, we will not hesitate to lay charges under the APA and will hold all involved accountable." In response to this letter, Mr De Beer, assured her that teeth grinding had never been practiced in South Africa. "The NWGA has, and never will, support nor advise producers to apply this practice in any way and we firmly support the view of the NSPCA on this matter." Wool Farmer published a follow-up article in the February issue in which the Australian department of primary industries (DPI) reminded sheep producers that the practice of grinding sheep teeth had been listed as a prohibited procedure under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. DPI District Veterinary Officer Rachael Holmes said any producer who practiced this technique was liable to be fined (approximately A$14,000) or imprisoned for 12 months. No benefit Traditionally, the procedure of tooth grinding or trimming was recommended by some sectors of the industry in the 1980 s because of supposed productivity improvements, Dr Holmes said. She said studies on large numbers of sheep in Victoria and southern New South Wales had shown no benefit from teeth grinding. Under the Code of accepted farming practice for welfare of sheep it states these procedures do not have any beneficial effect on health, well-being or productivity of the animals, but do have the potential to cause significant pain, she said. Improving lamb survival rates is the key IMPROVING lamb survival rates, rather than increasing ewe conception rates, is the key to more lambs at marking. A recent seminar in Australia highlighted research results on boosting lamb survival. Private consultant, Jason Trompf, Victoria, said Australian lamb survival rates had not improved in more than 20 years, costing the Australian sheep industry more than $100-million annually. "We are losing a significant number of lambs in the first 48 hours of life across the country, somewhere between 10 and 15 million lambs, he said. It is a significant issue for the national flock from a production and welfare perspective. Dr. Trompf said there had previously been an over-emphasis on improving ewe conception, which was misguided. "Half of the lambs born in the average flock are born as twins. So it is twin lamb survival where the big issue lies, he said. "Increasing conception rates is just pushing a higher percentage of flocks into this twin category, where there are currently very poor survival rates. He said it was more efficient to target nutrition and improve survival of lambs already being bred. lambing, which was why feed should be prioritised to twinbearing ewes. "The way to do that is to scan them around day 90 of pregnancy and from that point on allocate more quality and quantity of feed to twins, he said. Feed is devoted away from single-bearing ewes that are often over-fed and allocate it to twinbearing ewes that are, in typical circumstances, underfed." Conception rates "The only time it would pay to improve conception rates is when you have reasonable lamb survival rates. Then you can work on conception but most farmers tackle it in the opposite order, he said. "To devote resources to extra conception is an inefficient way and poor approach from a profitability point of view to improve lamb marking. With current lamb survival rates at 50pc for Merino twins, 80pc for Merino singles and slightly higher for other breeds, allocating feed to ewes that needed it most was the key. Twin lambs were very responsive to ewe condition scores at The importation into South Africa of live cloven hoofed animals from countries or zones not recognized as free from Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) by the World Organization for Animal Health (OlE) will no longer be allowed. This was announced in a notice in last month's Government Gazette (No ) published by Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson, minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. According to Ms Joemat- Pettersson this decision was taken to protect the livestock industry and other related industries in South Africa against the introduction of animal diseases into the country.

17 Bl. 16 Wolboer/Wool Farmer Junie 2012 Aussie farmer's desperate plea for help against wild dogs IN A desperate plea for help in controlling wild dogs, an Australian farmer in southern New South Wales has taken radical action. Russell Murdoch from Khancoban, has thrown the carcases of his dead sheep the latest victims of wild dog attacks at the doorstep of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) office. Fed-up with the lack of action and funding from authorities, Murdoch took the matter into his own hands to demonstrate his frustration when he dumped 11 first-cross lamb carcases at the Khancoban NPWS office last week. Hoping his demonstration would prompt some action, Murdoch, who farms with his wife Catriona, said the wild dog problem in the area had gradually become worse each year. When I first started farming here 30 years ago it was a novelty to see a dog, which were pure Dingoes then, now they are more hybrid wild dogs and numbers have increased two-fold, he said. He has the evidence to prove it. Every month for the past 13 months Murdoch has killed a wild dog on his property, which he said was only done opportunistically. In the area last year 37 wild dogs were killed by Murdoch and other trappers and Murdoch lost 40 sheep. Each attack cost the Murdochs lost income and animal health bills. The latest attack equates to about A$1 000 in lost income from the lambs as they were, but they were potentially worth more as they grew. Murdoch also has nine lambs at home he is treating with antibiotics due to injuries sustained in the latest altercation. Human safety was also of concern for Murdoch who said most wild dogs he saw weighed more than 25 kilograms and were vicious. They are also becoming more daring as last year when Catriona was driving down the drive she saw New generation uniforms for British soldiers ready for 'plug-and-play' British soldiers' uniforms could soon use electrically conducting yarn woven directly into the clothing, replacing cumbersome batteries and cabling. The "e-textiles" could provide uniforms with a single, central power source. This would allow soldiers to recharge one battery instead of many and cut the number of cables required in their kit. Surrey-based Intelligent Textiles showcased the lightweight uniform at an event organised by the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE). Weaving techniques The company has patented a number of techniques for weaving complex conductive fabrics. "We have built-in conductive yarns that then take power and data to where it needs to be," Asha Thompson, director of Intelligent Textiles, told BBC News. "One of the problems with conventional cables is that breakages can be catastrophic. What we do here is build in redundancy, so that if the fabric gets cut, damaged or torn, we still have a way of re-routing the data." The company has received from the CDE, which wants to find solutions for reducing the physical and the "cognitive" burden placed on soldiers. Currently, separate batteries may be required for each piece of a soldier's equipment, which adds to their carrying load as well as being costly. This is one reason why a centralised battery pack is so desirable. Recharge one battery In addition, it removes the hindrance of the many wires and cables required in military equipment. These can add weight and can tangle and snag. Soldiers would also be able to recharge or replace one battery instead of many. "We've got the fabric integrated into the vest, into the shirt, into the helmet, the backpack, and into the glove and weapons platform," said Ms Thompson. The new uniform could reduce the current physical burden for soldiers "We have a ringmain that The advanced uniform, which could provide soldiers with a single, central power source, could be in use by the end of the year. (Picture: BBC.) allows us to power data wherever we want it to go. We can send power up to the helmet without it being tethered." The "plug-and-play" connectors used in the current uniform prototype are for demonstration and are unlikely to be the ones used in a finished product. Short-circuiting This is partly because they have not been environmentally-proofed to stop them rusting or shortcircuiting, and also because they will need to work with older equipment still used by armed forces. Also being developed is a fabric keyboard for use with a portable computer that will be integrated with the uniform. The company is planning to carry out field trials in May and the system could see some limited use by the end of the year. But it is likely to be 2014 or 2015 before the lightweight uniforms see more widespread use. Next generation The company is currently working with BAE Systems to integrate other next-generation equipment into the uniform. The Centre for Defence Enterprise was set up to provide a new process for harnessing innovative ideas with potential defence or security applications. It calls for research proposals from academia and companies for ideas that are high-risk but which may also have great benefits. The organisation is based at the Harwell science campus in Oxfordshire and is part of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL).

18 June 2012 Wolboer/Wool Farmer P. 19 Ancient art of felt making still alive and well, also in South Africa Felt is one of the oldest ways of making fabric from wool fibre without spinning or weaving. Felt making is thought to have been around for about years. It was probably discovered when wool was placed inside foot coverings to help insulate them. According to ancient legend two saints, Saint Clement and Saint Christopher, were fleeing from persecution. To ease their tired and blistered feet they stuffed their shoes with wads of wool. The heat, moisture and friction caused the wool to felt and so created the first felted woollen sock. Today felted socks are as popular as during the Middle Ages! The Russian policemen line their boots in winter with insulating felted socks. Why does wool felt? Individual wool fibres are covered with small scales. When water, friction, (such as rubbing) heat and pressure are applied during the felt making process the scales open up and bond together forming a tight fabric. Merino wool is the best for felting. The wool has to be carded to obtain the correct density felt. Felt made from wool naturally has all the superb qualities associated with woollen products. The insulating properties of wool and felt have been appreciated for centuries. Nomadic tribes gathered tufts of wool while herding their sheep over the icy steppes of Russia and Mongolia. This was then felted and broad felt strips were made. These were then used over a wooden, lattice frame to form a tent-like home, called a yurt. The woollen felt provided shelter against driving snow and winter winds. Nomads Even today nomadic peoples in Central Asia and the northern parts of East Asia are still practise felt making and yurts can be found in Kazakhstan and Mongolia. If you desperately want to buy one, visit to see what is on offer and how a yurt is constructed. The yurts are decorated with strips of woollen, mainly felted carpets and each area of the yurt has A felt toy in the making. Nuno, a Cape Town enterprise, trains local women in the art of felt making. Nuno also exports their products. an allocated function. Today felt is an essential part of our world and widely used. Christmas stockings and billiard tables, horse blankets and piano hammers, drum mallets and even bowler hats are all made from felt. Felt reduces sound transmission and is used wherever noise reduction is essential. Fashion and felt are fusing. Artistic creations combining silk and woollen felt are popular and the felt hats of the sixties are making a comeback. Make your own felt Should you want to make your own felted fabric from wool look up the process on co.uk. Two South African enterprises have also embraced felt making. Chic Fusion executive Razaan Jakoet s passionate interest in fibres was the reason she experimented with felting techniques in wool. Razaan s experience in teaching needlework and related studies in textiles has helped in creating and establishing her business. Natánael sê vir Hom: Waarvandaan ken U my? Die farisieërs se harte, inteendeel, was vol bedrog. Jy sal groter dinge sien as dit. Aussies target tracks of land for fracking LARGE swathes of agricultural land in the South East, Far North, and the Lower and Mid Northern parts of South Australia (SA) have been named as potential targets for fracking. The State Government's draft Roadmap for Unconventional Gas Projects in SA, released last week, reveals exploration for coal seam gas, shale and tight gas is well under way in the regions and lauded its potential as an alternative to coal-fired electricity production. This is despite hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, remaining suspended in New South Wales while an independent review into the process and standards is concluded. The SA exploration licences - which cover parts of the Coonawarra wine region and are adjacent to the Clare Valley - are being driven by more than 20 companies and joint ventures responding to the success of unconventional gas in the US, the processing and sale of which has rocketed in the past few years, due mainly to shale gas extraction. Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the sector had the potential to deliver hundreds of millions "if not billions" of dollars to the State and provide a new lease of life to the Cooper Basin. "The road map is intended to inform investor strategies as well as build public confidence in the government's policies, programmes and regulations of the unconventional gas resource sector," he said. "Its transparently lays out the factors that will be taken into account in considering whether or not to approve an unconventional gas project so as to ensure compatibility with co-existing natural, social and economic environments." But fracking has proved unpopular in Queensland, where reports of carcinogenic contamination in aquifers surrounding Dalby is being blamed on CSG wells.
