Technical Data Sheet Grivory HT-PPA Grivory HT is a thermoplastic engineering material based on a semi-crystalline, partially aromatic copolyamide, PA6T/X. The main distinguishing feature of Grivory HT, when compared to other well-known polyamides, is its better performance values at high temperatures providing parts which are stiffer, stronger and have better heat distortion stability. Parts made of glass-fibre reinforced Grivory HTV-5H1 can resist thermal pulse loading up to temperatures of 300 C. Grivory HT fills the specification niche between technical thermoplastics and high performance plastics. Girvory HT materials are available as flame retardant types along with standard grades reinforced with glass-fibres or minerals. All these grades may be used efficiently in commercially available machines to produce injection moulded articles. The good flow properties of the melt and its rapid solidification lead to economical production cycles. Grivory HT is suitable for the production of technical parts exposed to high temperatures. For this reason it is mainly used in the application fields of: Electro/electronics Automotive Safety technology Mechanical engineering Domestic appliances

Introduction All Grivory HT grades are semi-crystalline thermoplastic engineering materials based on partially aromatic copolyamides. Grivory HTV and HTM grades are particularly suitable for the manufacture on thin-walled, extremely stiff and heat distortion resistant injection moulded parts. With their good specification profiles Grivory HT grades fill the specification niche between technical thermoplastics and high performance plastics. Properties Fluctuation in temperature or humidity have only a slight influence on the properties of parts made of Grivory HT. The parts remain strong and rigid even after absorption of moisture and at temperatures of up to 120 C. Resistance to chemicals Parts made of Grivory HT exhibit good resistance to chemicals, even at high temperatures. Resistance to hot water Even after 3000 hours constant immersion in hot water (95 C), parts made of Grivory HTV-4X1 still exhibit good values of strength and stiffness. A change in weight after this treatment was + 3.8% and the increase in length in the direction of injection only %. Resistance to hot, acidic descaling solution Parts made of Grivory HTV-4X1 retain their functionality even after long periods of time in hot descaling solution. After 500 hours of constant immersion in amidosulfonic acid (ph 1, 95 ), parts made of this material still exhibited high strength (170 MPa) and stiffness ( MPa) values. Resistance to petrol After 1000 hours immersed in FAM B petrol containing alcohol at 60 C, parts still exhibited good values for strength (>160 MPa) and stiffness (> MPa). Very little petrol was absorbed by the parts, only approx. 3%, and this very slowly. Surface etching was not apparent. Grivory HTV-5H1 is also extremely resistant to «Super» grade, high octane, lead-free petrol. The very slight change in property values is particularly remarkable. The weight increase after storage under the same conditions of those given for petrol containing alcohol was only 1.3%, with values of MPa for stiffness and 200 MPa for strength. Parts made of Grivory HTV-5H1 in this test, exhibited considerably better resistance than those made of aliphatic types of polyamide such as PA 6, GF 50. Resistance to coolants (automotive) Grivory HTV-5H1 is characterised by its excellent resistance to hot mixtures of glycol and water. After 3000 hours at 108 C in such a mixture, Grivory HTV- 5H1 still exhibits strength values of more than 100 MPa. Grivory HTV-5H1 surpasses all comparable construction materials based on polyamides with its stiffness values of MPa after 1000 hours exposure at 135 C. Resistance to hot oils and brake fluid No significant reduction of strength values can be seen after 1000 hours immersion in hot motor or gear oil, hot brake fluid or synthetic oils at 135 C. After 3000 hours immersion in hot gear oil (150 C) parts made of Grivory HTV-5H1 still exhibit high strength (190 MPa) values. 3

Pretreatment Delivery Grivory HT is supplied in granule form ready for processing in sacks. These multi-layer sacks have an intermediate layer of aluminium and are sealed air-tight. Granules from sealed, undamaged sacks do not need to be pre-dried. Storage Grivory HTV and Grivory HTM injection moulding granules should be stored in a dry place protected from the elements. During cold periods, the unopened sacks should be stored in the moulding area for a few days before use to allow equalisation of the granule and air temperatures. This prevents moisture condensation on the surface of the granules when the sacks are opened. Drying As is typical for polyamides, Grivory HT absorbs moisture from the air. If granules become moist or are exposed to the air for any length of time they must be dried before processing can begin. Use of damp granules will reduce the optical and mechanical properties of the parts manufactured resulting in surface defects and embrittlement of the injection moulded articles. In such cases it is necessary to predry the granules in an air circulating or vaccum oven or, preferably, in a dehumidifying dryer. Dehumidifying dryer at C for 4 16 hours Circulating air oven at C for 6 16 hours Vacuum oven at C for 4 16 hours Overheating or excessive drying times can lead to yellowing of the granules. Handling and safety Grivory HT granules are supplied in air-tight and light-proof packaging. They may only be used for the intended purpose of injection moulding material. Spilt granules may cause accidents (falls) and should be swept up immediately. Conventional safety measures should be taken during processing and attention must be paid to the particularly high melting temperatures (approx. 350 C) and mould temperatures (up to 160 C) for Grivory HTV and Grivory HTM. Negligence and careless behaviour during start-up and purging of the machine can lead to severe burns. 8

Processing Processing using injection moulding machinery All Grivory HT grades can be processed using commercially available screw-injection moulding machinery suitable for polyamides. This should be equipped with an efficient heating system with three separately heated zones capable of reaching temperatures up to 350 C. The machine should also have separate, well-regulated nozzle heating, controllable shut-off nozzles allowing a free flow and air extraction in the vicinity of the nozzles. A clamping force of approx. 7,5 kn per cm 2 of the projected surface area is necessary. Processing data Grivory HT grades with glass-fibre and mineral reinforcement Barrel temperature C Mould temperature C Grivory HT grades with glass-fibre reinforcement and flame-proofing Barrel temperature C Mould temperature C In order to utilise the optimum product characteristics of Grivory HT, a high mould surface temperature is necessary. Prerequisites for this are an efficient heat-transfer system, welldimensioned cooling channels in the mould and thermal separation (heat insulation board) between the mould and clamping plates of the machine. Air extraction Efficient air extraction, especially in the vicinity of the nozzle, is necessary when processing Grivory HT. This is of particular importance when changing from a low-melting plastic to Grivory HT. Decomposition gases caused by overheating of the melt or due to excessive dwell times, should not be inhaled. Sprue and gate systems Achievable temperature in the control range up to 350 C Best possible thermo-decoupling from the rest of the tool Melt decompression relief only via the screw An open system with a short conventional runner to the part Use of components protected against wear is recommended for production tools with a high material throughput Gate types Basically, all types of gate which are suitable for other stiff, glass-fibre reinforced thermoplastic materials may be used. The gate cross-section should be made as large as possible and the position of the gate must be selected so that: A free jet of melt (jetting) is avoided Sink marks are prevented (position in the area of the largest wall tickness) Minimal weld lines are formed Film gate should be preferred to multi-point gates (in line) in order to reduce the number of weld lines. Venting Moulds for Grivory HT and HTM grades must be well vented, particularly in the region of weld lines. In addition, ejectors with clearance gaps and ventilation channels in the parting line (height 0,02 mm) are recommended. Ejection / Demoulding angles Grivory HTV and Grivory HTM grades solidify very quickly in the mould and have exceptional dimensional stability. Asymmetrical ejection forces or forcible ejection of undercuts should be avoided. The use of many ejectors with large surface areas or a stripper plate is recommended. The demoulding angle of cores should be 1 to 2 %. Filling of the mould /Flow paths High injection speeds, with adjusted speed reduction towards the end of the filling sequence, are recommended in order to avoid gas traps and burning at the weld line. Grivory HT grades are very liquid i.e. they have a low viscosity. Ratios of more than 1:100 for wall tickness: flow path may be easily reached (valid for wall ticknesses of 1,5 to 5 mm). Cold gate systems with at least 4 mm diameter (max.1,4 x wall tickness of part) are preferred to hot gate systems. If a hot gate is chosen for economical or technical reasons, the following points must be allowed for: 9

Processing tests and injection moulding trials Foreign polymers present in the cylinder should be removed using suitable purging materials and any hot gate systems should also be cleaned. A glass-fibre reinforced polyamide 66 is suitable for use as a transition material. Heating is commenced, with the screw as clean and free of materials as possible, starting from the temperature peak of transition material around 300 C, increasing to the necessary processing temperature of 340 C (refer also to processing data). After a minimum of three complete cylinder purges (air shots), processing with the shortest dwell time can begin. When processing with Grivory HT material is finished, screw, cylinder and melt-flow direction systems should be purged clean. Colouring Grivory HT grades have a light yellow/grey natural colour. Owing to the high processing temperatures of 350 C, the possibilities for coloured compounds are limited. The thermal stability of colouring agents must be taken into account during their selection. Inorganic compounds are preferable to organic ones. Highly concentrated resin bonded masterbatches are preferable to universal ones using a polyolefine base. Liquid colouring agents are unsuitable due to their tendency to form streaks. The recommendations and data given are based on our experience to date. No liability can be assumed in connection with their usage and processing. Domat/Ems, May 2000 Conditioning Dimensional and mechanical characteristics of all Grivory HT grades are only very slightly influenced by absorption of moisture. For testing purpose, finished parts can be stored in a humid environment until a weight increase of approx. 1% has been reached. Accelerated hot-water treatment should be avoided in order to prevent swelling stress. 10
