TYPE III - OTHER PROJECT ACTIVITIES Project prticipnts must tke into ccount the generl guidnce to the methodologies, informtion on dditionlity, bbrevitions nd generl guidnce on lekge provided t III.E. Avoidnce of methne production from decy of biomss through controlled combustion Technology/mesure. This project ctegory comprises mesures tht void the production of methne from biomss or other orgnic mtter tht: () Would hve otherwise been left to decy under clerly nerobic conditions throughout the crediting period nerobiclly in solid wste disposl site without methne recovery, or (b) Is lredy deposited in wste disposl site without methne recovery. 2. This project ctegory comprises mesures tht void the production of methne from biomss or other orgnic mtter tht would hve otherwise been left to decy nerobiclly in solid wste disposl site without methne recovery. Due to the project ctivity, decy is prevented through controlled combustion of the wstes of type referred to in prgrph () nd/or (b) bove. Mesures re limited to those tht result in emission reductions of less thn or equl to 60 kt CO 2 equivlent nnully. 3. For the cse of stockpile of wstes where in the bseline usully there is reduction in the mount of wste through regulr open burning the use of the FOD model will hve to be djusted to tke ccount of this burning in order to estimte correctly the bseline emission. 4. The project ctivity does not recover or combust methne unlike AMS III.G. Nevertheless, the loction nd chrcteristics of the disposl site in the bseline condition shll be known, in such wy s to llow the estimtion of its methne emissions. 5. If the project ctivity involves combustion of prtilly decyed wste mined (i.e. removed) from solid wste disposl site, the project prticipnts shll: i) Provide justifictions for not using methne recovery nd combustion s technology/mesure to chieve emission reductions; nd Further work is undertken to investigte to which extent nd in which cses methne emissions my occur from stockpiling biomss residues. Subject to further insights on this issue the methodology my be revised.

ii) If fresh wstes re generted during the crediting period, demonstrte tht there is dequte cpcity of the combustion fcility to tret the newly generted wstes in ddition to the prtilly decyed wstes removed from the disposl site or lterntely justify the resons for combusting the prtilly decyed wstes insted of the newly generted wstes. 6. If the combustion fcility is used for het nd electricity genertion, tht component of the project ctivity shll use corresponding methodology under type I project ctivities. Boundry 7. The project boundry re the physicl, geogrphicl sites:. where the solid wste would hve been disposed or is lredy deposited nd the voided methne emission occurs in bsence of the proposed project ctivity, b. where the tretment of biomss through controlled combustion tkes plce, c. where the finl residues of the combustion process will be deposited, d. nd in the itinerries between them, where the trnsporttion of wstes nd combustion residues occurs. Project Activity Emissions 8. Project ctivity emissions consist of :. CO 2 emissions relted to the combustion of the non-biomss crbon content of the wste (plstics, rubber nd fossil derived crbon) nd uxiliry fossil fuels used in the combustion fcility, b. Incrementl CO 2 emissions due to incrementl distnces between the collection points to the controlled combustion site nd to the bseline disposl site s well s trnsporttion of combustion residues nd finl wste from controlled burning site to disposl site, c. CO 2 emissions relted to the fossil fuel nd/or electricity consumed by the project ctivity fcilities, including the equipment for ir pollution control required by regultions. In cse the project ctivity consumes grid-bsed electricity, the grid emission fctor (tco 2 e/mwh) should be used, or it should be ssumed tht diesel genertors would hve provided similr mount of electricity, clculted s described in ctegory I.D. 3 9. The expected nnul quntity (tonnes) nd composition of the wste combusted by the project ctivity during the crediting period shll be described in the project design document, including the biomss nd non-biomss crbon content of the wste (Q biomss nd Q non-biomss ). 0. The expected consumption of uxiliry fuel for the incinertion process (Q fuel ) should lso be reported in the project design document. CO 2 emissions from the combustion of the non-biomss (i.e., fossil) crbon content of the wstes nd from the uxiliry fossil fuel consumed will be estimted ssuming the complete oxidtion of crbon to CO 2 in the combustion. Also the expected consumption of uxiliry fuel for the incinertion process (Q fuel,ux ) should be reported in the project design document. These dt will be used to estimte the nnul bseline emissions, nd the ex-post project ctivity emissions. CO 2 emissions from the combustion of the non-biomss crbon content of the wstes nd from the uxiliry fuel consumed will be estimted ssuming the complete oxidtion of crbon to CO 2 in the combustion. The bseline scenrio is the sitution where, in the bsence of the project ctivity, orgnic wste mtter is left to decy within the project boundry nd methne is emitted to the tmosphere. The yerly bseline emissions re the mount of methne tht would hve been emitted from the decy of the cumultive quntity of the wste diverted or removed from the disposl site, to dte, by the project ctivity, 3

clculted s the methne genertion potentil using the first order decy model (FOD) described in AMS III.G. 3. In the cse of project ctivities combusting only freshly generted wstes, the bseline emissions t ny yer y during the crediting period is clculted using the mount nd composition of wstes combusted since the beginning of the project ctivity (yer x= ) up to the yer y, using the first order decy model s referred to in AMS III.G. Bseline emissions shll exclude methne emissions tht would hve to be removed to comply with ntionl or locl sfety requirement or legl regultions. y = MB,y * GWP_CH 4 MD y,reg * GWP_CH 4 MB,y y = CH4,SWDS,y MD reg,y * GWP_CH 4 methne genertion potentil in the yer y (tonnes of CH 4 ), estimted s in AMS III-G y Bseline emissions t yer y during crediting period (tco 2 e) CH4,SWDS,y Yerly Methne Genertion Potentil of the wstes diverted to be disposed in the lndfill from the beginning of the project (x=) up to the yer y, clculted ccording to AMS III.G (tco2e). MD reg,y methne tht would be destroyed or removed in the yer y for sfety or legl regultion GWP_CH 4 Globl Wrming Potentil for methne (vlue of 2) 4. In the cse of project ctivities tht combust wstes tht hve prtilly decyed in disposl site, the clcultion of the yerly methne genertion potentil of the wstes combusted from the project beginning (x=) up to the yer y will consider the ge of the wstes t the strt of the project. One of the following options my be used: () Estimte the men ge of the wstes contined in the disposl site in the beginning of the project ctivity ( ). It my be estimted s the weighted verge ge considering the yerly mount of wstes deposited in the SWDS since its beginning of opertion up to the yer prior to the strt of the project: mx A A + 2 A2 + 3 A A = = = mx A + A2 + A A A = weighted men ge of the wstes present in the SWDS prior to the project strt, yers before project strt, strting in the first yer of wste disposl (=) up to the mximl ge of the wstes contined in the SWDS t the project strt (=mx.) 4

A totl mount of wste deposited in the SWDS in ech yer. It shll be obtined from recorded dt of wste disposls, or estimted ccording to the level of the ctivity tht generted the wstes (for exmple, considering the mount of wood processed by swmill in ech yer, nd estimting the mount of wstes generted nd disposed in the SWDS in tht yer). If the yerly mount of wste deposited in the SWDS cnnot be estimted, then n rithmetic men ge my be used ( = 0.5 * mx). By using this option, the bseline emissions t ny yer y during the crediting period re clculted using the sme formul s provided in the lst prgrph, nevertheless, the exponentil term for the First Order Decy Model exp [-k j.(y-x)] will be corrected for the men ge, nd will be substituted by exp[-k j.(y-x-)]. (b) Clculte the yerly methne genertion potentil of the SWDS s described in AMS III.G, considering the totl mount nd composition of wstes deposited since its strt of opertion. The methne genertion potentil of the wstes removed to be combusted up to the yer y in the crediting period will be estimted s proportionl to the mss frction of these wstes, reltive to the initil mount: y = y x= A A x CH4, SWDS, y -MDreg, y *GWP_CH4 A x A CH4,SWDS,y Amount of wstes removed to be combusted in the yer x (tonnes) Totl mount of wstes present in the SWDS t the beginning of the project ctivity (tonnes) Yerly methne genertion potentil of the SWDS t the yer y, considering ll the wstes deposited in it since its beginning of opertion, nd without considering ny removl of wstes by the project ctivity. (c) Estimte the quntity nd the ge distribution of the wstes removed ech yer x during the crediting period, nd clculte the methne genertion potentil of these wstes in the yer y. For Age distribution is the discrete prtitioning of the wste by ge (i.e., the number of yers since it ws generted nd deposited t the site). The estimtion of the ge of the portions of wste being removed from the disposl site nd combusted ech yer my be done by topogrphicl modelling of the wstes present in the relevnt sections of the disposl site. This pproch should include segregtion of the wstes into even-ge lyers or volumetric blocks bsed on historicl or constructive dt (design of the disposl site). This informtion on quntity, composition, nd ge my be bsed on () historicl records of the yerly mss nd composition of wste deposited in the section of the disposl site where wste is being removed for combustion; or (b) historicl production dt for cses in which the wste t the site is dominted by reltively homogeneous industril wste mterils (e.g., wste by-products from swmills or finished wood product mnufcturing). Option (b) tht uses historicl industril production dt should pply the following steps. Step: Estimte the totl mss of wste t the disposl site in the section where it is to be removed bsed on the section s volume nd the verge density of the wste. Step 2: Apportion the mss of wste 5

exmple, in the yer x=2 of the project ctivity, the mount A 2 ws removed to be combusted, nd this mount cn be divided into A 2,n prts, ech prt belonging to the ge n. In the yer y the methne genertion potentil of the portions removed from the SWDS my be estimted s: y = nmx n= nmin CH4,SWDS,y,n - MDreg, y * GWP_CH4 CH4,SWDS,y,n Yerly methne genertion potentil of the wstes removed since the beginning of the project ctivity x= up to the yer y during the crediting period, segregted ccording to its ge n t the time of removl (tco2e). It is clculted using the tool referred to in III-G, substituting the exponentil term for the First Order Decy Model exp [-k j.(y-x)] by exp[-k j.(y-x-n)]. Lekge 5. If the controlled combustion technology is equipment trnsferred from nother ctivity or if the existing equipment is trnsferred to nother ctivity, lekge effects t the site of the other ctivity re to be considered. Monitoring 6. The emission reduction chieved by the project ctivity will be mesured s the difference between the bseline emission nd the sum of the project emission nd lekge. ER y = y (PE y + Lekge y ) ER y Emission reduction in the yer y (tco 2 e) 7. The mount of wste combusted by the project ctivity in ech yer (Q y ) shll be mesured nd recorded, s well s its composition through representtive smpling, to provide informtion for estimting the bseline emissions. The quntity of uxiliry fuel used (Q,fuel ) nd the non-biomss crbon content of the wste combusted (Q,non-biomss ) shll be mesured, the ltter by smpling. The totl quntity of combustion residues (Q y,sh ) nd the verge truck cpcity (CT y ) shll be mesured. The electricity consumption nd/or genertion shll be mesured. The distnce for trnsporting the wste in the bseline nd the project scenrio shll lso be recorded. 8. In the cse of project ctivities processing newly generted biomss wstes, the project prticipnts shll demonstrte nnully, through the ssessment of common prctices t proximte wste disposl sites, tht the mount of wste combusted in the project ctivity fcilities would hve been in this section into wste types nd ges using historicl records on the output of products produced in given yer from the industril fcility nd fctors for the verge mss of wste by-products produced per unit of ech product. 6

disposed in solid wste disposl site without methne recovery in the bsence of the project ctivity nd it would decy nerobiclly in the disposl site throughout the crediting period. The project prticipnts will demonstrte nnully tht the mount of wste combusted in the project ctivity fcilities would hve been disposed in solid wste disposl site without methne recovery in the bsence of the project ctivity. 7
