We won t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect. We provide advice and support to empower anybody experiencing a mental health problem and we campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. Purpose of the job The purpose of this post is to head up and lead the Business Development function within Mind to ensure that Mind maximizes business development opportunities. Scope of the job You will coordinate the delivery and development of Mind s new business function working across partnership Fundraising and Local Mind contracting teams. You will have responsibility for coordinating environmental scanning work, the business development process and managing a pipeline of new business projects. 2 Key priorities for the post are: - To establish an integrated approach to new business development across Business Development, Partnership Fundraising & Local Mind contracting teams/colleagues. - To establish a pipeline development process for new business proposals, incorporating a structured approach to staging (e.g., decision to proceed, partner confirmation, bid sign off, completion of negotiation, implementation sign off). - To establish a reporting & performance management process for the new business pipeline ensuring targets, standards and timelines can be met. - To work to support the achievement of a target for increased income in this area, as set out in the Income generation & Finance Strategy. - As part of the pipeline to give particular attention & support to the development of large scale new business projects. Key responsibilities 1. To lead and develop the Business Development department to meet agreed objectives and outcomes. This will include formulating departmental work programmes, projects and plans, policies, procedures, objectives and outcomes and regularly monitoring, reviewing, evaluating, developing and reporting on performance. 2. To contribute to Mind s strategic and corporate objectives and to work across Mind, Mind Retail and Local Minds as required. 3. To lead the Business development department including line management to three direct reports. This includes undertaking appraisals, supervisions and team meetings and in accordance with Mind s commitment to a mentally healthy workplace. 4. To develop and manage budgets for the business development department, and for the broader business development process and to undertake effective financial management. This will include forecasting, setting, monitoring, reviewing and reporting on budgets. 5. To work closely with, and coordinate the business development process across Heads in Partnership Fundraising, Local Mind Contracting & Finance; to work collaboratively with other staff, senior managers, trustees and other internal and external stakeholders and to lead by example and contribute to a culture of co-operation, flexibility and adaptability within the department and across Mind Head of Business Development JD+PS Grade F Page 2 of 5

3 6. To share peer responsibility for the work of the directorate and provide operational peer support and cover as required 7. To attend, chair and contribute to meetings, briefings, reviews, due diligence and auditing and compliance activities and to prepare and present papers & regular pipeline reports to senior management, trustees, and other internal and external stakeholders as required. 8. To make a range of professional, technical, specialist and other relevant decisions ensuring that all decisions are appropriately informed and made in accordance with Mind s approach. 9. To assess and manage problems and risks to Mind in own area of work and for the department and where relevant across the organisation. 10. Lead the department to provide excellent services internally and externally, championing highest levels of customer care. 11. Ensure that the work of the department is appropriately informed by the views and experience of people with lived experience of mental health problems. 12. To provide subject matter expertise and provide advice and support to the department and organization as required. 13. Keep abreast of external trends and developments and changing circumstances and adapt accordingly the role, team, department and systems and procedures within Mind. To identify and propose relevant development opportunities for Mind and to provide updates and reports to senior management as required. 14. To develop and maintain contacts with other organisations and to negotiate and influence on complex and significant department and/or organisational issues. 15. To be an ambassador, spokesperson and representative of Mind as required at events and in the media. Expectations: 1. To attend and contribute to meetings, training, and other events as required. 2. To attend and contribute to the supervision and appraisal process. 3. To ensure that all responsibilities and activities within this post are in accordance with the terms and spirit of Mind s policies 4. To travel to meetings in England and Wales, which may require the need to work unsociable hours e.g. attending evening or weekend meetings or for overnight stay. 5. To adhere to relevant legal and statutory requirements including the Data Protection Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act. 6. To use Mind s resources responsibly. 7. 4 Mind Person specification: Head of Business Development (Grade F) Essential criteria Experience 1. Significant experience of planning, developing, implementing, delivering, monitoring, evaluating and reviewing strategic and operational activities. 2. Manager level experience of managing staff including undertaking supervisions and appraisals, engaging and developing staff. 3. Experience of financial and budget management including planning, developing, forecasting, setting, monitoring, reviewing and reporting on budgets. 4. Experience of project management including planning, developing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on performance. 5. Experience of managing and delivering objectives including dealing with competing priorities and other challenges. 6. Experience of working collaboratively and in partnership with individuals, groups, organisations and stakeholders internally and externally. 7. Experience of developing and implementing quality improvement criteria and measuring, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on impact. 8. Qualified to degree level education and/or professional qualification (or equivalent). 9. High level ability to evaluate strategic and operational plans of a wide range of departments against organizational objectives, and identify needs and opportunities for development projects. 10. Proven creativity, determination, personal credibility and persuasiveness to conceive major innovative projects and persuade the organisation to adopt them. 11. Experience of the delivering innovative new initiatives with exacting deadlines, taking account of external trends and the current policy landscape. 12. Demonstrable experience of engaging and negotiating effectively at a senior level with organisational partners across voluntary, private and statutory sectors, representing the full range of strategic interest of the organization. 13. Experience of successfully brokering agreements between colleagues at departmental Head/Director level and decision makers in third parties. 14. Experience to plan own work over an annual timescale and produce and oversee the Business Development programme Plan for Mind. Skills 1. Excellent verbal communication skills to chair meetings, deliver presentations and work with internal and external staff and stakeholders at all levels. 2. Excellent written communication skills to write senior and complex correspondence, reports, presentations, policies, procedures, processes and strategy papers. 3.
