4 Room #9, IMO Headquarters, London Remark Recently, some accidents have occurred during carriage of bauxite in bulk, while bauxite has been safely carried by sea for many decades and safe carriage of bauxite became one of the important subjects for the Sub Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC Sub Committee). The bauxite industry formed the Global Bauxite Working Group (GBWG) with the aim of conducting a detailed investigation into the characteristics and behaviour of bauxite during carriage by sea. The results of the research by the GBWG were submitted to CCC 4, which provided the basis for consideration on the draft individual schedule for bauxite cargoes. As the results of the research, the GBWG concluded that the primary cause of accidents of bauxite in bulk was not liquefaction owing to increase of pore pressure in a pile of the cargo. This conclusion is quite unique though some discussion is necessary on this conclusion. The National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI) National Institute of Maritime, Port and Aviation Technology (MPAT) of Japan organise this workshop to facilitate the understanding on the results of the research by the GBWG and the draft individual schedules for bauxite cargoes prepared by the correspondence group on evaluation of properties of BAUXITE and revision of draft individual schedules for SEED CAKE, established at the third session of the Sub Committee (CCC 3). It will be our pleasure if this workshop contributes to the deliberation on carriage of bauxite in bulk at the fourth session of the Sub Committee (CCC 4).
