These are based on and will gradually replace the current EN /994 standards that will remain in force until ΕΝ Conduit systems for cable management - Part 1: General requirements The present Standard specifies the requirements and tests for conduit systems, including conduits and conduit fittings for the protection and arrangement of insulated conduits and/or cables in electrical installations or in communication systems up to 1000 V of alternating current and/or 1500 V of direct current. The present Standard applies to metallic, non-metallic and composite conduit systems, including cone threaded or non-cone threaded inlets that terminate the system. ΕΝ Particular requirements - Part 21: Rigid Conduit systems The present Standard specifies the requirements and tests for straight, rigid conduits, including conduit fittings for the protection and arrangement of insulated conduits and/or cables in electrical installations or in communication systems. ΕΝ Particular requirements - Part 22: Pliable Conduit systems The present Standard specifies the requirements and tests for semi-rigid, pliable conduits, including conduit fittings for the protection and arrangement of insulated conduits and/or cables in electrical installations or in communication systems. ΕΝ Particular requirements - Part 23: Flexible Conduit systems The present Standard specifies the requirements and tests for flexible conduits, including conduit fittings for the protection and arrangement of insulated conduits and/or cables in electrical installations or in communication systems. ΕΝ Particular requirements - Buried under ground Conduit systems The present Standard specifies the requirements and tests for underground conduits, including conduit fittings for the protection and arrangement of insulated conduits and/or cables in electrical installations or communication systems.

65 Technical Guide Classification of conduits according to standard EN According to the European standards, electrical installation conduits are characterized by a classification code format, based on their mechanical properties produced by a series of laboratory tests. The conduit can be marked by a classification code including at least the first 4 digits of that code where each digit represents a different property. 1 st DIGIT: Resistance to compression 2 nd DIGIT: Resistance to impact 3 rd DIGIT: Minimum operating temperature 4 th DIGIT: Maximum operating temperature In particular, the requirements regarding mechanical properties of conduits according to EN are as follows: CLASSIFICATION CONDUITS COMPRESSION FORCE N (Newton +4% -0%) 1 Very Light Light Medium Heavy Very Heavy 4000 COMPRESSION TEST (EN , 10.2) Conduit samples, (200±5) mm long, are placed on a flat metallic base and an intermediate steel piece is placed in the middle of the sample (Figure 1); a steadily increasing compressive force is applied on the steel piece over a period of 30 sec, reaching the values given in the above table. Once applied for (60±2) sec, the external diameter of the sample must be measured without removing the force. The difference between the initial diameter of the conduit before the test and the compressed diameter must not exceed 25% of the initial external diameter. The force and the intermediate piece are removed and 60 sec after removal, the external diameter of the compressed sample must not exceed 10% of its initial external diameter. The samples must not have cracks that are visible with the naked eye.

When the samples reach the specified temperature (minimum operating temperature) they are placed on the steel base of the apparatus. The hammer must be left to fall once on each sample. The hammer s mass and the fall height must be those shown in the above table. After the test, at least 9 samples must not have cracks that are visible with the naked eye, or distortions that prevent their normal use.

A conduit sample, (675 ± 10) mm long, is placed vertically in the apparatus shown in (Figure 3). The test is carried out on 3 samples. The flame is applied to the samples according to the above Table and then it is removed. The sample is considered to have passed the test if it is not ignited. The sample is considered to have passed the test when it is burned or ruined without being burned and when after the burning has stopped, there is no indication of burning or scorching within 50 mm of the upper and lower ends of the clamps. If the sample is burned, it must be considered to have failed the test if the burning continues 30 sec after the removal of the flame. If the paper tissue under the sample is ignited, the sample must be considered to have failed the test.

70 Technical Guide Heat resistance. Test (EN , 12.2) The load of this test must be of the same classification as the compression strength test corresponding to the maximum operating temperature. Then, each sample is placed in the appa-ratus together with the corresponding mass-weight and they remain in the hot chamber for 24h±15min. The sample together with the load must be left to cool-off at room temperature. Then, the load is removed. Immediately after removal, it must be possible to pass a suitable calibrator through the conduit with the same load and without initial speed, with the sample in vertical position.

ΙΡ Protection Rating Classification of electrical material according to EN According to the European standards, the protection rating of the electrical material of electrical installation boxes, fittings and conduits is specified by the IP protection index, that comprises 2 digits where each digit represents a different property of protection against external effects. 1 st DIGIT: 0-6 Protection against penetration of solid particles. 2 nd DIGIT: 0-8 Protection against penetration of liquids. GLOW WIRE TEST (EC ) The glow wire must be applied once to each sample at the most unfavourable utilisation position intended (with the test surface in vertical position). The sample is considered to have passed the test when there is no visible flame or prolonged glow or when the flames or glow are extinguished within 30 sec from the removal of the glow wire.
