Ariane Suite Management of Power Plants USING MODELING TO BETTER EXPLOIT DISTRICT HEATING UTILITIES PRODUCTION PLANTS Philippe Baudet Manager of the Product Range Ariane ProSim

Our first experience in District Heating Field Ariane software is coming from petrochemical field Ariane software is used in Power Plant in order to optimize utilities production (minimize production costs) UEM project (2005/2006) was our first experience in DH field This presentation is going to be reporting on this project

Presentation Outline Scope of the presentation Focus on a power plant Modeling and using a software : Why? Main difficulties to take into account Two different ways for conducting such a project Example

Focus on a power plant in DH field A power plant works under heavy constraints and produces mainly : - Electricity - Hot Water (export flow rate and temperature (required heat power)) Combustibles Centrale Electricity Eau déminéralisée Autres entrées Apports externes (eau chaude, vapeur) Power Plant Utilités produites Electricité (revente) Hot Water Cold Water District Heating

Focus on a power plant in DH field The aim is to optimize the production while taking into account all production constraints (technical, environmental, economical) Fuel Power Plant Demineralized water Hot Water Cold Water District Heating Other input External call (Hot Water, Steam) Produced utilities Electricity (resold)

Focus on a power plant in DH field Power plant management is in full upheaval due to new and more complex economical context and new environmental constraints Fuel Constraints Cost variability Power plant Environmental constraints CO 2 (market?) SO 2 Contract management: respect consumption bounds Electricity (Buying and reselling market) Note : Some of these constraints are not real time constraints : - A cogeneration contract is evaluated over several months - CO 2 emission is important for the annual evaluation Production Constraints (day to day variability)

Focus on a power plant in DH field We will not focus on DH Networks We will focus on the Power Plant : Operational optimization of power plant under all previously defined constraints The idea is to implement a tool, only one model, which is usable and understandable by all users - Real time operation (operators) Real time aspects - Planning (budgets) - Environmental constraints Planning and scheduling aspects - Management (investments /contracts)

Presentation Outline Scope of the presentation Focus on a power plant Modeling and using a software : Why? Main difficulties to take into account Two different ways for conducting such a project Example

Modeling and using a software : Why? First interest : Minimize fuel cost Surprisingly enough, this is not the most frequent motivation. Sites managers are often convinced that they work well and most of the time, it is quite true NB : only 1 percent of fuel consumption in some sites, represents already a lot of money and a lot of CO 2 emission

Modeling and using a software : Why? A great interest in : Time saving Development of budgets Editing of retrospective assessments (Emissions, cumulated production ) Editing of annual mass and energy balances Editing of financial reports (mean costs, annual exploitation costs )

Modeling and using a software : Why? Another great interest in : Pollutant emission control Mass annual emission (CO 2 ) Pollutant concentration in smoke (NOx, SO 2 ) Integration of environmental aspects in optimization strategy Automatic reports of cumulated emissions

Modeling and using a software : Why? Another expressed need : Real time decision aid tool Decision aid tool to cope with risks (equipment item failure ) Decision aid tool to cope with production variation (marginal costs, evaluate the cost due to production increase) Real time decision tool to conduct the production

Modeling and using a software : Why? Most frequent need : A tool to cope with the future Decision aid tool for investment Decision aid tool for buying and reselling contracts Conducting tool to face incoming constraints The context is quickly changing, constraints are multiplying, degrees of freedom (to optimize the production) are increasing: Experience is no longer sufficient and one feels the need to use a calculator in order to face the future

Modeling and using a software : Why? But also : Operators awareness Operators are mainly made aware of the following constraint : «Ensure the required production» and properly conduct the power plant But financial impact of some decisions is not often taken into account It s of a secondary interest Financially evaluating the operating decisions provides an interesting information and knowledge to operators Warning : The tool may be rejected!

Presentation Outline Scope of the presentation Focus on a power plant Modeling and using a software : Why? Main difficulties to take into account Two different ways for conducting such a project Example

Main technical difficulties to take into account Need a reliable model of the real production context and models must evolve easily Work with reliable measurements (Data reconciliation) Calculations have to be robust (with most often non linear models) «On-line» optimization calculations have to be quick Must take into account multi-period aspects (contracts) Must take into account multi-site constraints

Human aspects to take into account Avoid project rejection (operators) Integrate all users in the project Operators must be involved from the beginning of the project Their precise knowledge of the power plant is of primary importance to obtain an accurate model (link between measures and model data) Their implication in the development of the model helps with the acceptance of the tool in control room We must present the software like a decision aid tool and not like a tool which will teach them their job Avoid project rejection this aspect is all but by no means insignificant

Presentation Plan Scope of the presentation Focus on a power plant Modeling and using a software : Why? Main difficulties to take into account Two different ways for conducting such a project Example

Two different ways for conducting such a project Global approach: Turn key project All in one project, entirely subcontracted Objective: At the end of the project, press the button and just wait for results. Step by step approach More long term approach with more internal investment (not only project management but also tools handling) Assets are assimilated at each stage Possible approach if the needs are very precisely known, in a quite stable context. Use Cases have to be perfectly defined Objectives are re-evaluated at each stage with a better understanding of the system capacities

Two different ways for conducting such a project Step by step approach => 1 Modelling : Development / Validation => 2 Software handling => 3 Precise Use Cases definition Use Cases are discussed and developed only when user has a good understanding of the entire Software architecture At the end user has a better control on its system (software). He has then the possibility to modify or make it evolve alone This option is intrinsically the most effective... But it requires a more important investment to handle the system

Presentation Plan Scope of the presentation Focus on a power plant Modeling and using a software : Why? Main difficulties to take into account Two different ways for conducting such a project Example

Example Implementation site : «Chambière» (Usine d Electricité de Metz (UEM, France)). Process : District Heating (Metz (France)) Power plant : Heat and electricity coproduction

Example / Step 1 : Modeling / Calculation : Ariane Ariane.exe Graphic Interface CALCULATOR Simulation & Optimisation Ariane Calculation Dll Ariasim32.dll User Stand-alone tool (desk tool) A reliable and evolutionary model Precise real time costs - Financial balance - Mean costs - Marginal costs

Example / Step 1 : Modeling / Calculation : Ariane Ariane Model is used by all users whatever their need (economical or technical) Ariane is easy to use Model complexity can be adjusted (from a simple but quick model to more accurate and realistic models) Models are flexible Example : add a new equipment item in the model, update the costs Intuitive use Robust and quick calculations Limits : It is only a desk tool. No intensive data handling No file exports

Example / Step 1 : Modeling / Calculation : Ariane Simulation : Representation of the current operating point, starting from technical and economical data; establishment of the balance sheet and production costs (mean and marginal) Optimisation : Obtain the lowest running point while respecting all operating constraints Adjust all operating parameters in order to optimise the production (three available criteria: minimize the production cost, maximize the global yield or maximise total electric production) Whatever the configuration, it is possible to accurately evaluate mean and marginal costs of all produced utilities

Example / Step 2: Link to Real Time Database (DCS) exports.xls (configurable models) Ariane RT DataBase Plessala.exe Graphic Interface Calculation run Get the results Real time decision tool USER XML : very intensive data handling Plessala allows heavy handling of data (from DCS or not) Plessala allows to produce different excel exports (configurable according to the recipients)

Example / Step 2: Link to Real Time Database (DCS) 2 different representations of the same power plant model Dedicated to heavy data transfer More friendly Automatic switch from one to the other

Example / Step 3: Planning and Scheduling Elaborated use cases RT DataBase file.txt Plessala.exe Graphic Interface Ariane Communication Interface : COM Host Application (able to communicate with a COM object) For all «elaborated models» Results Calculation Run Multi-period optimization Multi-site optimization Planning, budgets Calculation loops

Example / Step 4: Entirely automated calculations Plessala Automation Server can also be used as an executable file inserted in the planned tasks of Windows Automated Calculations Stand-alone application Starts at a selected frequency Works with the current site data Publishes the results in a previously defined repertory Automatic storage of all exploitation points Possibility to work with all stored files
