Absender Absenderinformation frei nach Bedarf EFUF 2014 June 5, Lausanne, Switzerland Management of harmful organisms in urban areas Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) Invasion history & eradication plan City of Winterthur - Switzerland Urs Kamm Forest Protection, Canton of Zuerich, Switzerland Waldschutzbeauftragter Abteilung Wald, ALN

City of Winterthur more than 100'000 inhabitants located in the Greater Zurich Area many green spaces garden city city in a forest - surrounded by forests 26.8 km 2 forest 256 m 2 /inhabitant (Geneva 2 m 2 )

The Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) Anoplophora glabripennis One of the most destructive wood borer invaded to North America & Europe Native to Asia spread worldwide mostely by wood packing material (cheap quality of packing material mostely stones or steel) Exit hole on maple Old ovipositon pit Frass (Bohrspäne) from larval feeding

The Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) Anoplophora glabripennis Capable to attack and kill healthy trees Highly polyphagous attacks almost all broadleavs (high-risk tree genera Acer, Aesculus, Betula, Populus, Salix, Ulmus) Lazy beetle flies only short distances & 9to5 beetle Nice big beetle adult beetles are showy Long life cycle in Switzerland 2-3 years to complete their life cycle

ALB Quarantine organism Definition of the FAO of quarantine organisms (QO): A pest of potential economic importance to the area endangered thereby and not yet present there, or present, but not widely distributed and being officially controlled Infestation dynamics 1. prevention 2. eradication 3. containment 4. suppression

Invasion history recognized July on maple

Immediate actions 1. Elimination of obviously infested trees first days after outbreak 2. Delimitation of the infested area 1. Special ALB- sniffer dogs 2. Visual controls by ground observers first day recruitment of police, civil defence,.total persons 3. Tree climbers 3. Establish a quarantine area consisting of the infested zone ( Fokuszone ) and a buffer zone ( Pufferzone )

Infested zone & measures & buffer zone No wood from broadleaves is allowed to leave the infested zone without control Collecting firewood is prohibited

First actions in the industrial area

Immediate actions Challenges media work (local television, newspapers.) coordination and catering of persons information of local population (flyers, )

Preventive felling along the river Oviposition site on huge populus area cleared 64 infected Acer Oviposition site Infected acer Oviposition sites - derelict land (Industriebrache) completely cleared Infested trees derelict land completely cleared Forest All Acer maped preventive fellings

First year 2012 Control effort infested zone every single tree 3 times controlled by treeclimbers & sniffer dogs 144 adult ALB and approximately 470 larvae in various stages (from eggs to pupa) approximately 300 single trees felled m2 completely cleared Costs: Monitoring effort CHF (Canton of Zuerich) Fighting & replanting of trees - CHF (City of Winterthur)

Next 4 years Control effort infested zone every single tree 2 times controlled by treeclimbers & sniffer dogs Collecting depot for green waste (Grüngutsammelstelle) Costs per year: Monitoring effort CHF (Canton of Zuerich) Fighting & replanting of trees - CHF (City of Winterthur)

Long-term actions at least next 4 years Challenges long-term planning of staff and resources with great uncertainties motivation of tree climbers actions on private ground (often vs. interests of private ground owners) information of local population

Eradiation of ALB? Waste of money or investment in the future? Only few small populations in Central Europe resist the beginnings Source - stop efforts at the border & efforts to find alternatives to wood packing material (e.g. Big Bag s) If we are not able to eradciate ALB, which organism then?
