1 ARNOLFINI JOB DESCRIPTION DESIGNATION: RESPONSIBLE TO: RESPONSIBLE FOR: Curator of Performance Director Assistant Producer (live art/dance) Assistant Producer (film/music) GRADE: 6 DATE PROPOSED: November 2011 Purpose of Job The Curator of Performance is responsible to the Director for the development and delivery of Arnolfini s performance programme, encompassing live art, dance, music and film. It is expected that the Curator of Performance will contribute extensively to collaborative project team working across the organisation, liaising with Associate Curators and external partners, as well as having a specialist expertise in programming one or more performance related art forms. The Curator of Performance, in co-operation with all other Arnolfini staff, will attract, retain and provide a welcoming service to all users of Arnolfini s activities (public, artists, contractors, consultants, promoters, staff, sponsors, funders etc). Key Accountabilities Development, delivery and evaluation of the performance programme in line with Arnolfini s vision and aims Development and delivery of collaborative relationships and projects, liaising with Associate Curators and external partners Efficient management of the performance programme, contributing to overall programme management as part of the Senior Management Team Development and maintenance of a network of specialists in the field of contemporary performance (live art, dance, music, film), engaging with them as appropriate and representing Arnolfini in these contexts. Provide leadership and management of Assistant Producers/Curators of live art and dance/music and film. Duties and Responsibilities Strategy and Programme To work closely with the Director to devise the strategy for live art, dance, music and film as key strands of Arnolfini s programme To work in conjunction with the Director, and in liaison with relevant Associate Curators, to research, initiate, develop, implement and evaluate the performance programme To be responsible for all aspects of development and production of work both within and beyond the building

2 To research current issues within the fields of live art, dance, music and film, and to develop original and ambitious projects across the contemporary arts To establish Arnolfini as a recognised research hub for contemporary live art, dance, music and film To devise and implement an artists professional development strategy Fundraising: To research, initiate and prepare funding applications and maximise other income generating opportunities to support the live art, dance, music and film programmes, in close liaison with the Director and Senior Management Team To be responsible for devising and implementing a strategy to maximise Box Office income in line with Arnolfini s programme strategy. To liaise with the Director, Associate Curators, Exhibitions Curator and Curator of Learning & Participation to ensure effective cross programme project working. To work in conjunction with the Senior Marketing Manager regarding copy, images, press releases and audience development projects relating to the exhibitions programme To establish a clear evaluation strategy for the live art, dance, music and film programmes in-keeping with wider organisational evaluation methods Audiences and Participation To work closely with colleagues across programme, learning and marketing to research and develop understanding of Arnolfini s diverse audiences. To liaise closely with the Curator of Learning and Participation in the development of programme content and opportunities for research, learning and participation. To liaise closely with the Marketing team in the development of programme content which is appropriate for Arnolfini s target audiences To work closely with the Curator of Learning and Participation with regard to producing interpretation materials and activities for a wide range of audiences. To develop new collaborations and networks in keeping with Arnolfini s vision as a space for ideas and a platform for artists Programme Delivery and Management To work as an active member of Arnolfini Senior Management Team, contributing to the effective delivery of our aims and objectives. To plan and manage the delivery of the live art, dance, music and film programmes efficiently and effectively To provide leadership, management and motivation for the live art, dance, music and film team, advising team members of their roles and responsibilities, providing regular guidance and supporting them in achieving their objectives To manage relationships with artists including negotiation of contractual agreements To work closely with and manage relationships with relevant Associate Curators and external partners, including negotiation of contractual agreements To work closely with the Operations Manager in planning for the allocation of space and technical resources; the briefing and collaboration with Arnolfini s technical team; and the Front of House team (Duty Managers and Box Office). To assist the preparation of an annual budget for approval by the Director and Head of Finance & Operations To work within agreed budgets, to monitor budgets, and ensure the maintenance of accurate up to date financial records for the Performance programme (live art, dance, music and film) To monitor ticketed income as part of effective budget and data management.

3 To undertake regular staff performance reviews, annual appraisals, setting clear objectives and targets in line with the organisational aims, assessing and identifying necessary training requirements. To ensure the documentation of the performance programme in line with archival policies of Arnolfini Advocacy, Networks and Partnership Working: To develop and maintain a network of specialists in the field of contemporary live art, dance, music and film, engaging with them as appropriate and representing Arnolfini in these contexts. To work in conjunction with the Director to initiate, develop and sustain collaborative regional, national and international relationships, raising the profile of Arnolfini as a leading artistic and research centre To work with a wide range of external partners on the development of projects beyond Arnolfini s building To lead on Arnolfini s partnership with InBetween Time Productions to develop and deliver the biennial InBetween Time festival, acting as the key contact within Arnolfini for IBTP. General: To represent Arnolfini and ensure the live art, dance, music and film programmes maintain a high profile regionally, nationally and internationally To produce written quarterly reports of achievement against aims, objectives and targets for the Council of Management To be fully conversant with all Arnolfini policies including Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety and ensure that all policies are adhered to at all times To attend and contribute to training or meetings as required To carry out any further duties as reasonably requested by the Director Scope for Impact Ensuring Arnolfini is at the leading edge of contemporary arts practice and maximising the creative talent available both internally and externally Supporting Arnolfini in its ambition for multidisciplinary, cross departmental working Supporting internal and external projects which raise the profile of Arnolfini

5 Person Specification Essential (must have) Education to degree level or equivalent Experience of developing creative ideas, inspiring others and leading teams in the delivery of new initiatives At least 5 years of experience as a Curator of Live Art, Dance, Music, Film and inter-disciplinary work, with a specialist knowledge in one or more of the art forms Significant experience of working in a managerial role Demonstrable knowledge of contemporary performance. Ability to work concurrently on multiple projects and ensure they are completed on time and to budget Experience of project management in a performance environment Experience of planning and implementing strategies and policies Knowledge of arts funding structures and experience of fundraising Experience of setting and managing budgets Highly developed staff management and team working skills Relationship management and partnership building experience Excellent written, verbal and IT communication skills Self-motivated with an ability to work autonomously and as part of a team Desirable (should have) Experience of managing online content Experience of audience development Experience of Databox ticketing system

6 Terms and conditions The salary is offered at Grade 6, 29,000 per annum. Standard Arnolfini terms and conditions will apply. Hours will be 40 hours per week. Annual leave entitlement will be 24 days pro rata per annum. The post is subject to a 6 month probationary period.
