1 How To Attack Lighting Energy Waste Article supplied by OSRAM Sylvania Energy is today s hottest topic, and with good reason. The demand for energy continues to grow as our population grows. Many people are talking about providing government funding for further development of alternative energy sources. Some ask: Should utilities be allowed to build new coal-fired plants or new nuclear plants? What about taking a different approach? Instead of adding generating capacity, what about reducing demand? Lighting accounts for 38% of the electrical energy use in commercial office buildings (See chart at right). Look up check the lighting in your building. If you are in a commercial or institutional building, you probably see fluorescent lighting. What do you see? There is a good chance the bulbs are old-technology T12 lamps (1.5 inches in diameter). A typical 2-lamp, 4-foot, T12 fluorescent system with 34-watt lamps and energy saving ballasts uses about 72 watts. Immediate savings above your head Today, without much effort, you can replace the fluorescent bulbs and ballasts in the existing lighting fixtures with 28-watt, T8 lamps (which are one inch in diameter) and high-efficiency electronic ballasts. The result: You ll cut the wattage consumed by that figure to 42 watts. That s a 42% reduction in wattage. There s more. There are buildings with older 4-lamp lighting fixtures still out there, still in use. These buildings would have two 2-lamp systems per fixture. Reduce the building s lighting load from 180 kilowatts to (kw) down to105 kw. Let s assume the electricity cost is 10 cents per kilowatt hour (kwh). Let s pencil in 3,400 operating hours per year (typical for an office building). Then the savings would be $25,500 per year on the electrical bill 75 kw saved per hour x 10 cents each x 3,400 hours. 13% 38% Cooling 397 trillion Btu Lighting 1,143 trillion Btu... and that s just about now That math works provided your electrical rate does not increase. But, as recent electrical news in the Mid- Atlantic area has demonstrated, you really can t count on that. That means the potential for financial savings is even greater. When you looked up, did you instead find someone had already placed thinner (T8) lamps in the ceiling. All T8 systems are not equal; the technology is 28 years old. 3 Occupancy and photo sensors, with different applications, offer savings here. Occupancy sensors can automatically turn on the lights when a space is occupied and turn them off when the space is unoccupied. Bottom line: No need to worry about people remembering to turn the lights off! Occupancy sensors can be used in a variety of spaces including offices, conference rooms, storage rooms, corridors, restrooms and warehouse aisles. Continued from page 50 magnetic or electronic ballasts. If that turns out to be the case, you can still realize savings (from a retrofit of up-todate T8 technology) ranging from 43% to 29%. Larger spaces can save, too What about warehouses and manufacturing spaces? Most are lighted by 400-watt metal halide probe-start systems. Today, those lighting fixtures are being replaced by new lighting fixtures using T5 fluorescent bulbs (which are 5/8ths of an inch in diameter) and electronic ballasts. Such retrofits produce a wattage reduction ranging from 49% to 23%, depending on whether a 4-lamp or 6-lamp fluorescent fixture is used. This is exactly what OSRAM SYLVANIA did in its own distribution centers in Bethlehem, Pa., and Versailles, Ky. Not every application can be converted to T5 fluorescent light. If you prefer to stay with metal halide, new lighting fixtures will utilize pulse-start metal halide systems. The pulse-start lamps provide significantly better maintained light levels over the life of the lamps. That higher light level (over time) allows the use of lower wattage lamp/ballast systems. Fixtures in your ceilings now using 400-watt metal halide probe-start systems can be replaced with new fixtures using 320-watt pulse-start electronically ballasted systems. That yields a 25% wattage reduction, while the amount of light delivered doesn t decrease! Occupancy & photo sensors Another option would be to install new lighting controls. Then there is daylighting, a clear case of what s old is new again. If you can use natural daylighting to light your work space, then you can reduce the need for electric lighting. Think about the rows of lighting fixtures nearest the windows. If these had dimming ballasts and were controlled by photo sensors, then the sensors would dim the electric lights when sufficient daylighting is present. When the sky is overcast (or after sundown), the photo sensors increase the amount of electric light. The net result: additional energy savings. Help with the initial cost This is a great time to take advantage of incentive programs to upgrade buildings and reduce operating expenses. Formerly set to expire in 2008, this program now extends through Dec. 31, What s more, small business owners may be able to obtain low-interest loans for energy retrofits, again available through the federal government. The Energy Independence Act of 2007 included a provision to increase the amounts small businesses can borrow to make their facilities more energy efficient. Many utility companies also offer incentive programs to help offset the cost of investing in energy efficiency. In some cases, state governments also offer incentive programs. The federal lighting tax deduction available until 2013 ends is 60 cents per sq. ft. Reasons to act now Much attention is paid to the miles per gallon efficiency of cars and trucks and their emissions, but not many people realize that buildings use more energy and are responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than cars and trucks. This is a great time to take advantage of incentive programs to upgrade buildings and reduce operating expenses especially in Lighting! A 2003 survey of existing non-residential buildings by the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy found that greater than 70% of our existing buildings have not upgraded their lighting systems. Yet the technology exists today (i.e., it s not rocket science) to significantly reduce energy use and emissions from buildings. It s good that we have energy-efficient standards for new construction and major remodeling projects. But retrofitting existing buildings something building owners can do, right now will yield greater reductions in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions while reducing the need for new power generation capacity. n 54 C A P I T A L N O W capitallighting.com
