1 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT Executive Director American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio The American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio (ACEC Ohio), based in Columbus, Ohio, seeks to hire an Executive Director to manage the daily operations of the association and support the Board of Directors in establishing and achieving the organization s strategic goals and objectives. ACEC Ohio is a non-profit trade association comprised of approximately 120 engineering firms located throughout the state of Ohio. The organization is the state affiliate of the American Council of Engineering Companies, based in Washington, DC. ACEC Ohio is governed by a 17-member Board of Directors, to which the Executive Director reports. Currently, the Council employs an Executive Director, who is retiring, and one assistant. The Council also contracts for the services of a lobbyist and other professionals as necessary. The Executive Director is responsible for carrying out the Council s entire range of programs and services, including management of the Council s finances; building the organization s membership; planning meetings; communicating with the membership and external audiences; and overseeing the Council s government relations program. The Executive Director will be an enthusiastic advocate for the engineering industry, representing the industry in the public policy arena, with external audiences and with the association s members. The anticipated start date for the successful candidate is on or about April 1, It is desirable that the selected candidate will be available to attend the ACEC national convention in mid-april 2016 in Washington, DC. The salary for the position will be competitive and commensurate with the selected candidate s experience. A complete compensation package, including health insurance and a qualified pension program, will be offered. Position requirements include a bachelor s degree in political science, marketing, public relations, communications, or a related field, a minimum of five years of organizational management experience, outstanding written and oral communication skills, and the ability to engage in a limited amount of travel both within and outside the state of Ohio. 2 JOB TITLE: REPORTS TO: JOB SUMMARY: Executive Director, American Council of Engineering Companies of Ohio ACEC Ohio Board of Directors Under the direction of the Board of Directors, serves as the Council s Chief Executive Officer and has broad responsibility for managing the association and implementing plans, policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Directors. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Possession of a bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university in political science, marketing, public relations, communications or a related field A minimum of five years organizational management experience Strong written and verbal communication skills Limited travel within and outside Ohio ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. MANAGES THE COUNCIL S BUSINESS AFFAIRS Hires, trains, and supervises an executive assistant and other employees as authorized by the Board of Directors Develops appropriate personnel and employment policies for adoption by the Board Files and maintains Articles of Incorporation and other corporate records as required by law, and maintains in force all necessary insurances, including workers compensation, business liability and officers and directors liability insurance Maintains Council governance documents, including Bylaws and Manual of Policy & Procedure Timely and accurately maintains and updates membership records and databases Develops annual budget proposal for consideration by the Board of Directors Invoices and collects dues from members of the Council Produces monthly financial reports and other financial records as required by law or policy of the Board of Directors Ensures timely payment of all required federal, state, and local taxes Maintains the Council s office space and equipment Directs the work of outside consultants that may be retained by the Council (e.g., lobbyists, attorneys, accountants) 2. SUPPORTS THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Develops and implements programs and services that help accomplish the association s vision and mission, within policy guidelines set by the Board Monitors internal and external challenges that have the potential to affect the Council and the industry and report to the Board of Directors regarding these challenges Assists with preparation of Board meeting agendas and minutes Recommends modifications to Bylaws and Rules of Policy & Procedure as necessary Assists the Board with Strategic Planning in cooperation with the Planning Committee Assists the Board in compliance with legal requirements relating to conflict of interest, antitrust, and other pertinent laws and government regulations v1

DIRECTS THE COUNCIL S GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS ACTIVITIES Directs and supervises activities of contract lobbyist(s) Evaluates service of contract lobbyist(s) and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors as necessary Monitors legislation introduced in the Ohio General Assembly and, in concert with relevant committees, makes recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding legislation that affects the engineering industry Testifies, or arranges for members to testify, before legislative committees when required Monitors policies and procedures of state administrative and regulatory agencies and works to influence as appropriate Maintains a positive relationship with pertinent state agencies, including the Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, Ohio Public Works Commission, Ohio EPA, and others, as necessary Serves as Secretary-Treasurer of the ACEC Ohio Political Action Committee, assists with fundraising efforts of the committee, maintains financial records for the PAC and files all required financial reports with the State of Ohio Maintains a positive relationship with the Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors and represents ACEC Ohio before the board on matters affecting the engineering industry, such as licensing requirements for professional engineers and engineering companies. 4. PROVIDES SERVICE TO THE COUNCIL S MEMBERSHIP Responds in a timely fashion to member requests for information or assistance Produces printed and electronic newsletters and other communications and transmits regularly to ACEC Ohio members 5. REPRESENTS THE COUNCIL TO EXTERNAL AUDIENCES Serves as the Council s spokesperson in communications with media Writes and distributes press releases, white papers, and other reports and documents as may be needed to communicate industry information to external audiences 6. REPRESENTS THE COUNCIL WITHIN THE INDUSTRY Develops and maintains positive working relations with other construction industry groups, such as the American Institute of Architects, Ohio Contractors Association, Associated General Contractors and other engineering organizations Builds coalitions with other trade associations and organizations to jointly lobby specific legislative issues or pursue opportunities of mutual interest 7. SUPPORTS COUNCIL COMMITTEES AND REGIONAL COUNCILS (CHAPTERS) Assists committee chairs in arranging meetings, developing and distributing agendas, maintaining committee rosters, etc. Assists the Council s four Chapters as necessary and appropriate 8. PLANS COUNCIL CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS Secures meeting sites, publishes and distributes registration information, and manages registration for Council meetings and conferences Assists committees in the development of agendas and programs for Council meetings, conferences, and seminars v1

SERVES AS LIAISON WITH NATIONAL ASSOCIATION Attends the ACEC national conferences, as authorized by the Board of Directors, and participates in the National Association of Engineering Council Executives (NAECE) 10. FOSTERS MEMBERSHIP RETENTION & GROWTH Assists with development and implementation of member recruitment and retention programs EQUIPMENT USED: The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive.
