Benchmarking Sugarcane Production and Management Technology for Muscovado Sugar in the Province of Antique, Western Visayas Reynold Tan 1, Joy C. Lizada 1, and Bonifacio Cerbo 2 1 College of Management, University of the Philippines Visayas 2 Sugar Regulatory Authority *Research was funded by PCAARRD-DOST

Introduction Muscovado sugar was one of the major export products of the Philippines from the time the Iloilo port opened in the 18 th century; Production dropped in 1929 when the refined sugar production was introduced with muscovado production receding as a backyard industry Growing consumer preference for natural and healthy products Demand for in the international market has been increasing as the markets for organic, health, and wellness products are expanding.

Introduction Long-term sustainability of industries is essential in the light of pressures to satisfy diverse customer needs, to comply with government regulations and to maintain ones core competency. This has led to the identification of best management practices for highly critical and important commodities as the case of muscovado sugar.

Materials and Methods Study entails the benchmarking of the cultural management practices involved in sugarcane production to be processed into muscovado

Different Practices to be Benchmarked: Soil Sampling Land Preparation Planting Choice of Planting Materials Rate of Planting Spacing Replanting Practices Weed Control

Different Practices to be Benchmarked Fertilizer and Lime Application including Quantity,Timing and Basis of Application Timing of Closing the Cane Irrigation Management Prevention and Control of Sugarcane Pests and Diseases Harvesting Cleaning of Cane Delivery Trash and Ratoon Management Timing in Stubble Shaving Varietal Programming and Purification

Basis for Performance Measurement 5-point scale rating; Average score per cultural management (poor); (fair); (good); (very good) (excellent) Field survey and key informant interview Stratified random sampling allocated based on proportional allocation One set of pre-tested questionnaire divided into sections

In Summary,

Conclusion Study was able to benchmark existing cultural management practices vis-à-vis a known standards as recommended by Sugar Regulatory Authority To our knowledge, this is a seminal work to identify the critical industry bottlenecks that restricts the growth of the local muscovado industry. It is recommended that all interventions geared towards improving the industry performance be anchored on evidence-based research findings ( a pecking order in intervention) It is further recommended that to improve productivity in sugarcane production, the industry in Antique has to capitalize on its strengths while working on its documented areas for improvement in order to achieve a higher level of competitiveness derived from improved production practices.
