POSITION SUMMARY Briefly state why your position exists and what you consider the most important impact the position has on the organization. The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for protecting the life and safety of citizens; protecting citizen s property; enforcing laws, rules, ordinances and regulations; investigating crimes and violations; and providing assistance and response to emergency situations, as required. Deputies will carry out the Department s mission, which is to ensure the feeling of safety for the citizens of and visitors to Burnett County. Page 1 of 6

(e.g. Keeps abreast of changing technologies, trends and developments within the field; serves on various task forces; attends training sessions, seminars & certification courses) 1-5 Perform crisis intervention functions to include counseling, suicide prevention, recognizing abnormal behavior and taking appropriate action Communicate effectively and coherently with other officers and inmates using existing communication systems. Prepare investigative and incident reports Collects and preserves evidence in accordance with appropriate procedures; appears as witness in court, providing clear and accurate testimony. 1-5 Provides search and rescue operations, as needed; responds to emergency situations and major disasters. Reviewing of logs, statistics and other records regarding incident rates within various areas of the county. Review these referrals with involved agencies to determine if appropriate actions were taken. Evaluation of how officer performance, safety, and efficiency are being improved by training and education. Ability to take appropriate actions to protect these individuals and connect them with needed services. Others are able receive and effectively understand written and spoken communications. Assists prosecutor to obtain criminal charges and prosecute offenders. Mitigation and recovery of persons in need of assistance completed. Page 2 of 6

3 50-90 Receive, interpret and carry out instructions from supervisors, court documents, department manuals, and laws; understanding when to ask for clarification as needed Presents testimony and evidence to the courts in criminal proceedings Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation of processing of such documents as citations, affidavits, warrants, medical instructions, commitment orders, summons and other legal writs. Ability to efficiently, safely, and lawfully complete job duties as assigned and in accordance with training and procedure. Assists in the prosecution of criminal cases. III. FORMAL PREPARATION / EXPERIENCE Please answer the following based on the most representative combination of formal preparation and relevant experience to qualify for the position. 1. Formal preparation (or equivalent) to qualify for the position. Indicate years of previous experience and degree if required, as well as your preparation level. Must be 21 years of age and U.S. Citizen. High school diploma. Associate degree in Criminal Justice/Police Science, or minimum of 60 college credits; Bachelor s degree preferred. Certification or eligibility for certification by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board. No felony convictions, no extensive misdemeanor convictions, no domestic abuse convictions. Ability to possess a firearm. Valid Wisconsin drivers license with good driving record. 2. Relevant experience required to qualify for the position. (Indicate your relevant experience as well.) Experience as a law enforcement officer in a county, municipal, or state law enforcement agency. 3. Note any other training that is desirable for the position. (Indicate additional training that you have.) Specialized law enforcement training and/or certification in subjects to include Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, radar operation, Intoximeter, evidence collection, investigations. Training and experience in problem-oriented and community policing models is desirable. Page 3 of 6

About 90% of the time is spent walking, standing, sitting, talking, hearing, using near and far vision and low to medium fingering for typing and evidence processing. Kneeling, stooping, crouching, grappling, crawling, running, climbing, balancing, bending, jumping, reaching and feeling are performed about 10% of the time. Other actions may be required in unusual or non-regular situations. Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects in the performance of the job. Binocular visual acuity must be corrected to 20/20 corrective lenses may be required. Hearing defined as pure tone air conductive average threshold evidencing no more than 20 DB HL for the test frequencies of 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 Hertz in each ear, with or without hearing devices. Continuously (67-100% of workday) talk, hear, and use vision to include close, distance, color, night, peripheral, field of vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus (for duties such as traffic control, driving, maintaining control and security of situations). VII. PROBLEM SOLVING Please identify the typical types of problems you solve on a regular basis in performing your job. Also, include information on who else may be involved in helping with problem resolution. Deputies respond to a multitude of incidents and calls for service which require problem solving and mediation skills. Some common examples include but are not limited to disputes between individuals, civil disputes, juvenile matters, response to complex criminal cases, and traffic crashes. Ability to prioritize assignments in order to complete duties. In working to resolve disputes and solve problems, Deputies routinely work with other law enforcement officers and agencies, Courts, other emergency services providers, citizens and community groups, County or other human services agencies. Note assets, facilities, equipment, or funds, if any, for which you have some degree of accountability. Department issued vehicle and equipment including but not limited to firearms, weaponry, computer, electronic devices, and safety equipment. IX. UNUSUAL / UNIQUE MENTAL REQUIREMENTS Page 5 of 6

6 Does your position require any unusual or unique mental requirements? Law enforcement officers are frequently placed in a position of physical and mental stress. Duties involve frequent contact with the public and individuals who can become hostile, verbally abusive, combative or act in other ways making the job less than desirable. Deputies must be capable of using tact and courtesy in dealing with these individuals. Duties frequently include driving in extreme weather conditions, working under time pressure constraints, stress, and risks associated with potential life threatening situations. Work requires constant attention to safety procedures, proper law enforcement practices, and techniques. X. ADDITIONAL DATA/NOTABLE INFORMATION Please identify any other information that would help someone else understand your position more clearly: Because law enforcement officers are required to uphold judgments and the law and they are exposed to certain temptations to show favoritism, corruption and unlawful monetary gain, it is a business necessity that officers exhibit a history and characteristics of honesty, reliability, ability to manage personal finances, interpersonal skills and integrity. This position is in a primary category for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and requires the ability to complete all appropriate blood-borne pathogens training and implement precautionary procedures as warranted. Must satisfactorily complete all required training during time period established by department. XI.
