As of Jan. 1, 2015, there were 5.28 million head of sheep in the U.S. Top 10 Sheep Producing States

American sheep production 70% of sheep raised in the West with high-country grazing important part of ranches. Nearly half of all sheep spend some share of the year on Federal Grazing Leases. Mountain and open-range grazing require animals to be herded so thousands of men from Mexico, Peru and Chile who are under the H-2A program care for sheep. One third of American lamb to ethnic markets.

Priority Issues and Accomplishments Created the American Lamb Checkoff in 2002 with help of Barry Carpenter and Meat Association support. Program assesses lamb packing companies, feeders and ranchers with each sector having representation on board. Mandatory Price Reporting for livestock must be reauthorized by Congress (Expires September 30, 2015). Company mergers and thinner trade means less information available.

ISSUES Support of livestock protection programs between NAMI and ASI, NCBA, NPPC to offset HSUS and animal rights efforts in Congress. Wolves, coyotes, bears and lions among predators that kill a quarter of a million sheep every year despite management. Loss of damage control tools and USDA support would devastate ranches and companies.

Let s Grow Efforts Increase production from current producers. Encourage and facilitate new producers into sheep production. The goal is to grow total sheep inventory to meet the needs of traditional and non-traditional lamb markets and wool companies.

Dietary Guidelines

Nutrition and Health Dietary Guidelines: Misleading Recommendations not Supported by Science The Advisory Committee removed lean meat from what they consider to be a healthy dietary pattern. According to the report, dietary patterns with positive health benefits are described as high in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, seafood, legumes, and nuts; moderate in low- and non-fat dairy products; lower in red and processed meat; and low in sugar-sweetened foods and beverages and refined grains. Recommended a reduction of red and processed meats, despite their own review of the evidence and endorsement of a Mediterranean style diet. Included recommendations based on topics outside of nutrition and health, which is outside their scope and expertise. WHO s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) IARC announced a meeting on red meat and processed meat to evaluate the carcinogenicity of red meat and processed meat consumption. For 10 years NCBA, on behalf of the Beef Checkoff, has extensively reviewed the research of red meat and cancer, the research is being updated along with summaries and scientific references for IARC. Independent scientists researching this topic have consistently concluded the totality of the available scientific evidence is not supportive of an independent association between red meat or processed meat and cancer.

Increased Focus on Millennials #BeefsOnMyPlate #ProteinChallenge Showing Health and Human Services Secretary Burwell and USDA Secretary Vilsack that beef has a place in American s diets and as part of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines. 678 uses of the hashtag, so far. 244 of those mentions Over 100 photos posted with beef on a plate Dozens of trade media stories on the campaign, including online, print and radio. Launched campaign April 1 st 5,300 consumers have subscribed to daily s #proteinchallenge

Market Access Cattlemen support open markets, level playing fields and science-based standards in international trade. Every effort should be made to develop an integrated domestic-foreign trade policy which encourages reciprocity, elimination of unfair trade restrictions and movement toward private enterprise and free markets. Free trade agreements offer great potential to increase market share in key markets for U.S. beef in Asia and South America. Approximately 12 million American jobs depend on exports. Important Trade Developments Top 5 Export Markets in 2014 for U.S. Beef Japan: $1.58 Billion 241,129 Metric Tons Mexico: $1.17 Billion 242,566 Metric Tons Hong Kong: $1.15 Billion 154,520 Metric Tons Canada: $1.03 Billion 137,532 Metric Tons Korea: $847 Million 117,567 Metric Tons World Total: $7.14 Billion 1,196,752 Metric Tons Trade Promotion Authority (TPA): NCBA strongly supports approval of TPA. TPA gives the President the authority to negotiate trade agreements that reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers with other countries while giving Congress the final say over the trade agreements. Without TPA, it will be difficult to shepherd TPP through Congress The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a multi-lateral trade agreement currently being negotiated by the United States, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, Canada and Mexico.
