Married with three children Dr. Mahabub Hossain, a Bangladeshi national trained in development economics in the University of Cambridge, U.K has made substantial contribution to research on development economics and agricultural policy in South and Southeast Asia, and application of his knowledge for poverty reduction and empowerment of marginal people in Bangladesh as Executive Director of BRAC, the largest NGO in the developing world.. Throughout his long career as a researcher and research manager, he has contributed to advancement of knowledge in many fields such as agrarian structure and land reforms; rural non-farm activities; evaluation of technological progress in agriculture, micro-credit and infrastructure policies; impact of technology on income distribution and poverty; and Asian rice economy. The knowledge on the operation of agriculture and rural economy in Bangladesh that he has advanced with analysis of primary data has made substantial impact in the formulation of agricultural development policy in Bangladesh. For this contribution, he was awarded the first Gold Medal by the Bangladesh Agricultural Economists Association in His studies on the development of Asian rice economy, and constraints to technology adoption and impact of agricultural technology on income distribution and poverty has similarly influenced the formulation and priority setting of research programs at IRRI and in several national agricultural research systems. He is a former Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), and Head, Social Sciences Division, IRRI, Phipippines. He joined BRAC in 2007 as its executive director, and directed this reputed development organization till December 2013 to achieve its mission of reduction of poverty and empowerment of marginalized people in Bangladesh, and ten other countries in Asia and Africa. He is a member of the Global Panel for Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, and a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Global Fund for Agriculture managed by the World Bank.
