4 iue 1 reviion 1 page 4 of 18 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Applicability The document contain an evolving lit of requirement commencing with the original experimental facility requirement. It i intended to record a et of complete requirement for future development of the CDF. Currently it contain the requirement gathered from the leon learned from the firt tudie completed in the facility. Thi include uggetion from the team member that took part in thee tudie. Thee idea are pread acro variou apect of the CDF. Further evolution will incorporate thoe new requirement agreed by the CDF Configuration Control [1]. 1.2 Purpoe Thi document contain the Sytem requirement for the development of the ESTEC Concurrent Deign Facility (CDF). The CDF i a continuing development and the ytem requirement document tructure reflect thi apect. 1.3 Scope The document record the top-level requirement for the evolving development of the ESTEC Concurrent Deign Facility (CDF). The ytem concept i decribed briefly and then the hardware, oftware, operational, documentation and adminitrative requirement are defined. The rationale for thee requirement ha been decribed in reference [2]. 1.4 Definition of Term The ue of the word facility or CDF in thi document refer to the entire internal working environment, including the team, hardware and oftware within the facility. 1.5 Reference [1]. 5 iue 1 reviion 1 page 5 of 18 2 GENERAL SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS The top-level requirement on the facility come from two major ource: The philoophy behind the deign approach. The interaction with external entitie that place demand on the facility. The philoophy hould be a reult of the demand placed on the facility, but in practice it i neceary to eparate them. The concurrent deign and management approach can lead to requirement being placed on external entitie and via-vera. 1 The ESTEC Concurrent Deign Facility hall be a deign centre capable of producing ytem deign at varying level of detail at a high rate of turn over and to a high tandard of work. 2 It hall achieve thi uing a concurrent engineering approach and the expertie of it peronnel. 3 A tudy room() will be ued to complete the work and to aid communication between team member, the cutomer and other expert. 4 The tudy room() will contain all the relevant tool needed to complete the work including hardware and oftware. 5 A team of engineer and cientit hall be aembled to complete the deign work, and will meet in a tudy room at variou interval through a given tudy to work concurrently. 6 A ytem model will be developed for each project baed on the oftware available within the facility and limited ue of external pecialit oftware. 7 The facility will be able to produce variou ytem model for different pace ytem, including Earth orbiting atellite, exploration pacecraft, planetary probe and rover. 8 The tudie worked on in the CDF will be at varying level of detail depending on cutomer requirement. 9 The CDF hall adhere to the General Concurrent Engineering Philoophy defined a follow: Development of an engineering deign team covering all relevant dicipline from the kick-off; working and communicating in a ingle environment; to etablih a ytem() deign; within a hort period of time; and in a more conitent way; with repect to other approache. 10 The internal organiation will be developed around the concurrent engineering approach. 3 HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Facility Layout The facility architecture cover the environment in which the CDF operate.

6 iue 1 reviion 1 page 6 of A focal point hall be created within the CDF Seion room to direct dicuion and allow preentation to take place. During Seion thi will be the focal point for dicuion, preentation, and group deign work. 12 Two projector creen hall be placed at the focal point of the Seion room to allow the preentation of data. The creen hall be viewable by all Team and cutomer poition during a Seion. 13 The poition of the computer for each domain will be et out taking into account the frequency of communication between dicipline. Related dicipline hall be placed cloe together to eae communication. 14 The CAD ytem operational control hall be placed cloe to the projected diplay to allow fat and eay control of the diplay while preenting to the group. 15 The room in which the Seion take place hall be large enough to adequately cope with Entire Team (at leat 20), the Cutomer (at leat 3) and other guet (at leat 5). They hall be given adequate room to it (including a chair) and work. 16 The CDF hall be et-up to allow everal dicuion to take place at the ame time, without the diturbance to one another. However, all group hall be quickly gathered together when neceary. 17 The Team hall be provided with adequate condition to work individually at any point in time (including Seion) and for over both hort (minute) and long (week) period of time. Thee working area will be quiet (enough to think clearly) and not cramped. 18 The facility room hall have fale floor to allow cabling to be hidden under it and re-routed quickly. 3.2 Computer Hardware 19 The facility will contain enough PC/worktation to allow the Team to work together in the facility at the ame time. 20 PC/Worktation hall intalled for the following area: Sytem Miion Analyi Power Intrument Telecommunication Structure and Configuration Ground Sytem and Operation Thermal Data Handling (DHS) Propulion Attitude and Orbit Control (AOCS) Mechanim CDF Manager Adminitration Cutomer Cot Documentation Rik

7 iue 1 reviion 1 page 7 of 18 Note: other dicipline may be added or replace the above dicipline according to the tudy need and a related workbook and data ource intalled. 21 A minimum of 4 general-purpoe machine hall alo be required for the ue of other peronnel involved in a project. 22 (Silicon Graphic) Computer/worktation hall be available to run pecialied tool. 23 The following machine hall be intalled: CAD Station Simulation Station 24 The following machine will alo be preent: Thermal Analyi Station Structural Analyi Station 25 The CDF hall have an independent network to top external network problem affecting the facility. 26 The CDF network hall be upported by appropriate peronnel. 27 A fat A4 black and white laer printer hall be intalled. It hall include a large enough buffer memory to cope with large word document. 28 A4 colour LaerJet printer hall be intalled. It hall include a large enough buffer memory to cope with large word document. 29 An A0 Plotter will be intalled, capable of reproducing high reolution, 3D CAD image. 30 Video witching hall be intalled to allow fat witching of (at leat) key computer for the projection ytem. Thee key computer include CATIA and EUROSIM Unix worktation, a well a at leat two PC (including Sytem PC). The goal i to have every computer linked to the projection unit. 31 Hardware hall be intalled to allow diplay creation, and control of the flip-chart oftware. 32 The facility will have the capability to create mall phyical model of the pace ytem under development. Thee model will be eaily modified during Seion to aid dicuion. 33 Computer hardware hall be available to create back-up of all file that can be tored externally form the facility. 34 A CD writing machine will be intalled in the facility. 35 A Colour A3 Scanner hall be intalled to allow the electronic torage of all graphic and document.

8 iue 1 reviion 1 page 8 of 18 4 SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Overall Operating Sytem 36 The file management and interface will be contructed o that the uer can be guided to file with the minimum effort. 37 The oftware will prevent any incorrect aving, deleting, overwriting and moving of file. 38 A CDF uer interface hall be provided The Core Sytem Model 39 The Core Sytem Model hall be baed on Microoft Excel97. Thi oftware i ued throughout indutry, a well a being intalled a tandard on mot PC. It provide the mot flexible tool for imple calculation, and i upported by Viual Baic for more complex tak. MS Excel alo ha good preentation capabilitie, and i integrated with Microoft other Office tool (uch a Word, PowerPoint and Acce). 40 The Core Sytem Model hall be eparated into domain workbook to allow pecialit to work of their pecific part of the Model concurrently. Thee workbook hall be linked together to form an integrated model. 41 A central workbook (the Data Exchange) hall be ued, which all data flow between workbook hall pa through. 42 Domain workbook hall not pa deign data electronically without paing it through the Data Exchange workbook. 43 The configuration management of the Model hall be analyed and implemented in a clear and uniform manner. 44 The Sytem Deign hall be included in the configuration management. 45 The Equipment Lit will be tored in the Data Exchange a a reference for the Team and ue within domain workbook. 46 The Equipment Lit hall be controlled within the Sytem workbook. 47 The model mut be able to cope with everal (at leat 5) integrated pace ytem being developed at the ame time. 48 The Model hall allow both eparated and integrated output from the ytem. 49 The model hall produce everal different type of output. Some output are required to generate other reult within the model and to ae the current tate of the ytem() deign. Other are required a reult of the tudy itelf for the cutomer.

9 iue 1 reviion 1 page 9 of Training And Support 50 Uer guide hall be produced for all Excel workbook of the model, allowing new uer to undertand how to ue it and why it ha been et-up in uch a way. 51 The uer guide hall provide ufficient information to enable new uer to develop the workbook for required tudy and dicipline pecific tak. 52 The Uer Guide() explain all the MS Excel facilitie ueful to model workbook. It hould explain how they are ued, and what they can be ued for. Thi could be known a a reference of model implementation method. 53 Support in the ue of MS Excel and Viual Baic hall be available to help dicipline pecialit to develop their model, through training and/or direct modification of workbook. 54 Support hall be provided to the Sytem Model Adminitrator for the maintenance and development of the entire Model. 55 Support hall be provided to the Sytem Model Adminitrator for the organiation of all workbook and link Workbook Layout 56 Each domain workbook hall include a Summary heet, containing information on the given domain (ub-ytem), including all relevant (ummaried) deign information, uch a aumption, deign feature, ma & power budget. Thi heet hall be given a uniform format acro the entire model. 57 The tyle format of every workbook mut be tandardied throughout the model. 58 Workheet layout (epecially common heet) mut be the ame including font, layout and margin. 59 Every ub-ytem workbook hall include a heet containing a block diagram of the deign of the ub-ytem. 60 The heet containing the block diagram will include any other diagram ueful for communicating deign information. 61 The heet containing the block diagram hall be uniformly formatted for all workbook. 62 The Reult workheet of the Model domain hall be formatted o that they can be ued in report, and clearly diplayed (projected) within Seion. Thi hall alo apply to reult from other oftware tool External Input Data 63 A comprehenive databae of launch vehicle information hall be available within the facility and for ue with the Model. 64 Reearch will be conducted to identify exiting databae of information that could be ued to enhance tudy tak uing the CDF.

It hall be kept controllable, allowing election of different workbook to be updated. 74 When opening workbook to update the Data Exchange, the proce hall not allow calculation within domain workbook to be updated that can automatically change output value. 75 The ource (domain workbook) of each et of output parameter hall be defined, and any overlap removed, i.e. output parameter hall only be produced in one place. 76 The tructure of the output parameter of domain workbook hall be formalied throughout the Model. 77 Parameter link between workbook hall be et out in a centrally controlled way. 78 All workbook parameter will be uniformly defined. 79 The flow of information, which cannot be paed through the Data Exchange, hall be analyed to ee if it need to be tranferred, and how it can be tranferred. 80 The flow of information proce that i not paed through the Data Exchange hall be formalied and recorded in the model. 81 Each workbook of the Model hall be cleared of any obolete link (reference), either between heet, or to other file (workbook) at the beginning of a new tudy.

There are a number of way to find reference for removal: The Link window - Thi i found in the Edit menu, and how all the external file referenced by the workbook. Thi can be ued to identify what link have to be removed. It can alo be ued to change the ource of reference, and to check that the directory path point to the correct file. The Auditing menu - Thi can be called up and ued to identify reference with a workbook. The Define Cell Name window - Thi i found in the Inert menu under Name Define. All Cell Name preent in the workbook are hown, electing them bring up the ource of the name, which can include external file. Obolete Name can be removed here. 83 The Model hall be developed to allow reference (link) within workbook and macro, to be changed eaily when a file i moved to a different directory, or it name i changed. 84 The Input and Output heet of each workbook hall be made a uer friendly a poible. 85 Method for automatically creating input link to the Data Exchange and Reult hall be tudied and implemented a the CDF deign evolve during ucceive tudie. The ue of unit (item, equipment) for data exchange hall be defined, taking into account the need of the variou pecialit. 86 The ue of Deign Margin throughout the Model hall be tandardied and documented. 87 The deign margin hall conider deign maturity, and calculation uncertaintie. 88 Deign margin hall be clearly viible within the Model. Standard maturity level margin can be applied to each ub-ytem, and then (when defined) each piece of equipment. Thi tandard ha three level: 5% - Sytem i developed (off-the-helf) 10% - Sytem require modification 20% - Sytem require development Other margin can be added where the uncertaintie lie with calculation, and can be added to either the input or output of a calculation. Thee hould be clearly highlighted in the domain model. To make the margin clearly viible they could be added to the Data Exchange and ummaried for analyi. 89 Miion information hall be available within the model which can be modified within a eion, or at leat within a working day. Thi information hall include all parameter required by other domain to complete their work. 90 The Model hall be capable of recording change in the iterative deign, and will allow the team to tep back to earlier iteration.

12 iue 1 reviion 1 page 12 of Adminitration 91 The ue of MS Excel (the Model workbook) during preentation, a well a MS PowerPoint, hall be ued. 92 Where practical, the MSExcel Model hall be ued directly to produce report and other documentation. 93 All key word, abbreviation and acronym hall be documented and tandardied. 94 Method for flagging error and mialignment in data hall be invetigated a part of the evolving CDF deign during tudie, and practically implemented into the Model. 95 A databae that contain information on pat deign olution will be developed, including earch engine to find required information. 96 Limit will be et on the expanion of the core model according to the demand of the tudy being conducted in the CDF, and definition on the level of detail required from each domain will be created. 97 It will be poible to viualie (imulate) the miion within the eion a early a poible in the tudy. Specifically needed for developing the miion characteritic. 98 The ue of the Rik pecialit and model hall be developed o that rik data can be produced quickly. 99 During CDF tudie identify and record where the Rik pecialit could be ued more effectively for deign aement for continuing evolution of the CDF capability. 100 Implement a leon learned record for continual ue during CDF tudie by all Team member. 101 The ue of Radiation and EMC data when developing the deign hall be implemented. Thi data will be ued at an early tage to reduce the chance of under-deigning (or over-deigning) certain ytem. 102 File protection hall be ued through out the model to top unauthoried change taking place. Thi protection hall be uniformly ued throughout the Model Recording Of Seion Dicuion 103 The flow of the dicuion with Deign Seion will be recorded along with the minute. Thi will be at a high level, indicating the topic of dicuion rather than pecific information. Thi will be ued to gather undertanding about the deign proce, and to allow all dicuion topic to be concluded uccefully. 104 Any action given during a eion hall be prioritied o that thoe that could halt the deign proce are given top priority. 105 A oftware tool() hall be elected and intalled to allow information to be created, preented and tored electronically within a ingle Seion. 106 The oftware tool for eion information record hall allow the ue of both graphic and text.

14 iue 1 reviion 1 page 14 of 18 5 OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Operation uing the CDF are derived for planning, eion conduct and team tructure and reponibilitie. 111 Time hall be allowed for training the Team and Cutomer to work in the CDF environment, including dealing with Seion and ue of the Model prior to each tudy period. 112 A chedule hall be produced for each project, indicating time and date of Seion and miletone of the tudy. A Gantt chart will be produced for thi purpoe. 113 A high level plan for the deign proce hall be produced, outlining the ideal progreion of the deign proce. Thi will include a timeline of, domain definition and area of dicuion. 114 The facility hall be made available for training to increae participant knowledge of pace ytem engineering, ESA practice, and concurrent deign. 115 The CDF hall be capable of conducting meeting with people in external both viual and audible. 116 Meeting involving the whole Team during Seion, and with everal (at leat 2) external ite at the ame time hall be poible viually and audibly. 117 A method of verifying that everyone ha undertood everything in the ame way in a eion hall be developed and implemented. 118 All reult of meeting held outide of the main Seion hall be recorded and preented/communicated to the entire Team and Cutomer. 119 The Model hall be ued extenively within Seion to preent information and produce realtime reult. 120 Time and facilitie hall be made available for individual to have off-line contact with one another, either one-on-one or in mall group. 121 The Model hall have at leat one Model Manager (Sytem Analyt), who i in overall charge of the maintenance and development of the Model. 122 An expert (CDFAdminitrator) in the ue of MS Excel and Viual Baic will be made available to the Team to help them improve their model during each tudy. 123 An expert (CDF Adminitrator) will be available to the Model Manager (Sytem Analyt) to help olve overall ytem level problem. 124 A member of the CDF Team will be reponible for planning the future of the CDF including the following tak, chedule future project and eion and plan the overall development of the facility. 125 A flexible manning ytem hall be developed in co-operation with the ESTEC department that upply taff to make up the CDF Team. 126 During the development of the CDF aement hall be made of the impact of hort-term availability on the department and the CDF.

If a Team member i not available, a temporary replacement hall be found. 130 The Team will be given guideline a to their role within the CDF and the tudy under deign. Specific guideline will be given to each pecialit, a well a general intruction for the whole Team. 131 The Sytem poition within the Team hall be analyed to ee what i exactly needed from each individual. 132 When the Sytem poition function i etablihed for a particular tudy a job decription hall be produced, and the ret of the Team informed. 133 The cheduling of Seion hall be aeed, taking into account the availability of taff, and time needed in-between Seion to completed adequate work. 134 The eion Team Lead hall not allow the dicuion to wonder too far from the objective of that eion. Dicuion that move away from the objective will be concluded and recorded for dicuion at a later time at the dicretion of the Team Lead. 135 Method() hall be found to reduce the effect of dominant peronalitie on the direction of the deign. 136 All Team member hall have an influence on the deign relative to the technical iue and not peronality. 137 All relevant information noted by the Team during a eion hall be tranferred to an electronic format, either in the Model or accompanying electronic document. 138 At the end of each a tudy an archive hall be tored (and a CD hall be cut) containing all the important electronically tored data for that tudy. Thi hall include a a minimum report and the model and the eion minute.

16 iue 1 reviion 1 page 16 of 18 6 DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS The CDF documentation include ytem requirement and decription and Uer Guide for the facility and output from the tudy eion conducted in the CDF, the eion minute and upport document and tudy report. 139 The rationale/philoophy behind the facility and facility decription hall be documented in a Sytem Decription document. 140 An identifier/logo will be developed for the CDF, and ued throughout the facility, Model, and document. 141 Guideline will be developed indicating how the eion are conducted and Team and Cutomer interaction and reponibilitie. 142 The facility documentation hall be made flexible enough for reviion a the CDF develop. 143 A Uer Guide document will be produced for each individual element of the model, including domain workbook and other oftware tool. 144 The Uer Guide will be ued to train member of the Team. 145 A uniform format hall be adopted for the Uer Guide with flexibility conitent with domain pecific content. 146 The method of producing minute of Seion/meeting hall be made a efficient a poible.
