Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme for the Mediterranean: Key Milestones

Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme for the Mediterranean: Marine Litter Ecological Objective 10: Marine Litter Common Indicator 22: Trends in the amount of litter washed ashore and/or deposited on coastlines (including analysis of its composition, spatial distribution and, where possible, source); Common Indicator 23: Trends in the amount of litter in the water column including microplastics and on the seafloor; and Candidate Indicator 24: Trends in the amount of litter ingested by or entangling marine organisms, especially mammals, marine birds and turtles.

IMAP Guidance Fact Sheets Pollution and Marine Litter (WG.439/12)

IMAP Guidance Factsheets: Marine Litter CI22

IMAP Guidance Factsheets: Marine Litter CI23 Seafloor Marine Litter

IMAP Guidance Factsheets: Marine Litter CI23 Floating Marine Litter

Meta Data Templates: Pollution and Marine Litter (WG.439/14) CORMON on Marine Litter Monitoring (Madrid, Spain, 28 Feb. 2 Mar. 2017) reviewed a proposal by MED POL on the main elements to build data and metadata reporting on Marine Litter in the Mediterranean. MEDPOL Focal Points Meeting (Rome, Italy, May 2017) reviewed and approved the amended versions. Agreed Meta Data Templates for i) Beach Marine Litter, and ii) Seafloor Marine Litter; Floating Marine Litter and Microplastics will be developed during the biennium.

From 2017 MED QSR to 2023 MED: Key steps and lessons learned Mediterranean 2017 Quality Status Report Decision IG.23/6 (COP 20, Tirana, Albania, December 2017) IMAP implemented at national; where applicable subregional level; Towards the Fully Data-Based 2023 MED QSR MED QSR 2023 Roadmap, including better linkages pressures/impact/states

From 2017 MED QSR to 2023 MED: Key steps and lessons learned Implementation of the IMAP at national and where applicable subregional level: New data are required deriving from the implementation of the updated integrated national monitoring and assessment programmes; Improve regular reporting to a fully-fledged and operational IMAP Info System ; Ensure sufficient resources to contribute to the preparation of the 2023 MED QSR; Towards the Fully Data-Based 2023 MED QSR: Follow-up on the proposed general, biodiversity, coast and hydrography, and pollution and marine litter directions.

National Implementation of Libya 2018 Egypt 2018 (EEAA)

National Implementation of IMAP 3 pollution workshops and progress on regional level: 24 new/updated pollution assessment criteria: - Morocco (Rabat, Feb. 2018); - Egypt (Alexandria, Feb. 2018); - Tunisia (Tunis, March 2018).

Development of the Candidate Indicator 24 Defining the most representative species for IMAP Candidate Indicator 24 (ENG/FRE) (WG.452/Inf.4); A training session for sharing technical skills on marine litter ingestion by sea turtles was successfully organized in Portici, Naples on 6 July 2017 (Cooperation with INDICIT project); A French-speaking training session will be organized in Monastir, Tunisia (1-2 November 2018) where sea turtle experts from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Lebanon will participate; A specific Protocol on monitoring the amount of litter ingested by or entangling the selected species to harmonize methods and data collection has been developed (ENG/FRE).

Development of the Candidate Indicator 24 Within the framework of Assessment of available data to propose GES Targets with regards to the amounts of litter ingested by or entangling the sea turtles, a specific questionnaire has been prepared and disseminated through the SPA/RAC focal points and the Med Marine turtles specialists Network. The first draft of the assessment, the review of which is ongoing, was prepared based on the questionnaire. An agreement will be done with the Marine Turtles rescue centers of Tunisia and Lebanon in order to implement the specific protocol on monitoring the amount of litter ingested by or entangling by sea turtles. SPA/RAC will define the executing phases for the preparation of an operational strategy for monitoring the IMAP Candidate Indicator 24, which is planned for the end of 2018.
