MIGRATORY FISH AND FISHWAY SYMPOSIUM OF THE NORTH 8 9 October 2013 Technical and economic comparison of Taivalkoski, Ossauskoski, Petäjäskoski and Valajaskoskifish pass alternatives Dr. Kenneth MacDougall EnviroCentre Ltd, Scotland kmacdougall@envirocentre.co.uk
EnviroCentre and Fish Pass Experience Environmental consultancy Based in Glasgow, Scotland 40 technical staff Experience on all main Scottish Salmon rivers Technical appraisal/design for over 50 fish passes Scotland Finland (Kemijoki, Oulujoki) Russia (River Tuloma) River basin restoration plans River process restoration
River Restoration Rottal Burn, River South Esk 1.2km new channel Largest pure restoration project in Scotland Spawning & nursery habitat Salmon and sea trout Fresh water pearl mussel
Kemijoki Hydro Power Plants
Typical River Flow Conditions Hourly flow: May-October Hourly flow: 1-7 July 2010
Typical Water Level Fluctuations Daily variations in water levels: 1-7 July 2010 Daily variations in water levels and flow: 1-7 July 2010
Water Temperature
Fish Tracking Study Summary salmonids detected throughout tailrace larger fish more frequently detected upstream most fish detections within 60m of the power plant increased upstream movement during higher flows twice as much upstream movement during daytime increased downstream movement during evening more fish detected further upstream on right bank Threshold of flow between m 3 /s with noticeable increase in the activity of the fish moving upstream.
99 m 3 /s 1m 3 /s 3m 3 /s Typical River Conditions Below Power Plants T1 5m 3 /s Turbine operation (% time ) 1 Turbine ~20% 2 Turbines ~35% 3 Turbines ~45% 3D flow modelling (Process Flow Oy) Three fish pass entrance locations Three attraction flows Seven turbine operation/flow scenarios 569 m 3 /s 909 m 3 /s 5m 3 /s 1m 3 /s T3 T1 3m 3 /s 5m 3 /s 3m 3 /s T3 T2 T1 1m 3 /s
Appraisal of Fish Pass Locations A consistent approach has been adopted to appraising each Hydro Power Plant Primary Attraction Secondary Efficiency, Exit, Adaptability Tertiary Cost, Operation & Maintenance Fish passes to be designed for Salmon and Sea Trout Similar design approach for fishway types where possible Pool fishways (vertical slot, weir, orifice), roughened channels, borland Entrance locations critical, so will be informed by 3D flow modelling (left and right bank are looking downstream!)
Similarities at Hydro Power Plants Three kaplan turbines operation dependent upon flow Flow regime high variability Water level range variations Immediate surrounding area owned by Kemijoki Oy Constraints (power plant, switch gear, transformers, sub-stations, cabling, maintenance access, public road.) Opportunities (log channel, controlled access, operational regime )

Summary of fish pass routes identified Taivalkoski Ossauskoski Petäsjäskoski Valajaskoski Numer of identified fish pass routes Consise summary of all routes Challenges Opportunities Number of feasible options Left bank: 1 Right bank: Upstream exits will be either close to spillway and HPP intake or be excavatedthrough earth dam under road Options available on both banks Left bank: 4 Right bank: 2 Infrastructure on both banks (Hatchery and HPP access) Could utilise discharge from hatchery to enhance attractive flows Left bank: 3 Right bank: 1 Steep sided incised channel Right bank heavily constrained Nature like sections possible on left bank Left bank: 3 Right bank: 1 Right bank heavily constrained Small area available between HPP intake and spillway Could potentially utilise former log channel with screening
