6 Set Science Free On behalf of the PhD Association, the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University and this year s Organizing Committee, we welcome all students, faculty members and distinguished guests to the PhD Day You are invited to enjoy five oral and 30 poster sessions as well as the Fogh Nielsen Competition. Furthermore, this year s topic aims to inspire your to answer the question What can I do to set science free. Our Keynote Speaker, the inspiring biologist and author of best-selling books, Rupert Sheldrake will provoke our current paradigm for scientific thinking. The panel discussion will question issues related to entrepreneurship, education, ethics and the research environment, based on presentations by PhD Student Peter Sinkjær Kenney, AU, Professor Charlotte Ringsted, Vice-Dean, AU, Professor Gorm Greisen, KU and Professor Jens Christian Djurhuus, AU. By the end of the day we hope that every one of you will be full of ideas as how to set science free. A warm thank you goes to everybody who has taken their time to participate and help to make the PhD day of 2016 a joyful and inspiring event. Professor Ebba Nexø Chairman of the Organizing Committee Health, Aarhus University Vice-dean Lise Wogensen Bach Head of Graduate School Health, Aarhus University Professor Allan Flyvbjerg Dean Health, Aarhus University PhD student Christoffer Tobias Witt Co-Chairman of the Organizing Committee Health, Aarhus University

7 The Keynote Lecture Rupert Sheldrake, Biologist Dr Sheldrake is the author of more than 80 scientific papers and 11 books. He was educated at Cambridge and Harvard Universities, and has a PhD from Cambridge in biochemistry. He was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, a Research Fellow of the Royal Society, Principal Plant Physiologist at ICRISAT (the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics) in Hyderabad, India, and from the Director of the Perrott-Warrick Project, funded from Trinity College, Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, in California, a Fellow of Schumacher College, Dartington, England, and a visiting professor at the Graduate Institute in Connecticut. In his book Science Set Free (2012; published in the UK as The Science Delusion), Sheldrake shows that science is being constricted by assumptions that have hardened into dogmas. The 'scientific worldview' has become a belief system, which claims that everything is material or physical, nature is purposeless, and is governed by changeless laws of nature that suddenly appeared at the moment of the Big Bang. Consciousness is nothing but the physical activity of brains, and is imprisoned within our skulls. Sheldrake examines these dogmas scientifically, and shows that science would be better off without them: freer, more interesting, and more fun. In 2013 the Duttweiler Institute in Switzerland placed him among the top 100 Global Thought Leaders. In 2014 he received the Doshi Bridgebuilder Award at Loyola University, Los Angeles, and in 2015 he was awarded the Lucia Cianci Prize for innovative thinking in Venice. He lives in London with his wife Jill Purce, and they have two sons. His web site is

11 Student counsellor for PhD students Surviving you dissertation From time to time it is more than a book title. In the knowledge that studying for a PhD can be an overwhelming challenge, then Health has established a student counsellor for PhD students. What would you answer if I asked: Is it difficult to plan your daily work? Are things not working? Is it hard to collaborate with your supervisor? Do you find your situation as a PhD student difficult or unsatisfactory? I am always an interested listener. As PhD student counsellor I am a professional interlocutor. Conversations with me are confidential and anonymity is promised. It is not an alternative to the professional research supervision. By means of conversations, the counsellor can help students become aware of what they perceive as difficult and why. This is done in close collaboration with the Secretary of The Graduate School of Health if the process related issues have administrative elements. The intention is to help PhD students gain clarity, come to terms with their situation. It is also to help them to see other opportunities, if they experience personal problems or other difficulties related to the process of working and studying as a PhD student. The counsellor can also assist students to make competent decisions. You are always welcome to contact the PhD student counsellor! Sometimes sooner is better than later - no problem is too small for a talk. Personal contact: Sanne Angel phdstudievejleder@sun.au.dk Phone:

13 International Academic Staff Services (IAS) at the International Centre In close collaboration with AU Human Resources, International Academic Staff Services (IAS) helps foreign researchers (incl. PhD students) and their families through the practical challenges tied to living in Denmark. As part of this, the unit operates a help desk and a website IAS provides counsel for international PhD students and their family about issues of relevance, incl. job for the spouse, international schools and nurseries. The unit also provides information about practicalities for PhD students planning a research stay abroad. Furthermore, IAS assists international staff and PhD students with the paperwork and practical challenges during their stay in Denmark, e.g. health insurance and extension of residence and work permits. The IAS help desk is open Monday, Wednesday & Friday 10am-2pm and Thursday 10am-1pm at the International Centre. To make the transition to Denmark as easy as possible, IAS encourages new internationals to participate in the AU introductory events. The AU Introduction Day gives a general introduction to AU as an organisation and takes place every other month. Additionally, twice a month IAS organises Getting Started in Denmark which provides important on-arrival orientation and registration for newly arrived international PhD students and researchers. Lastly, IAS helps to arrange social and cultural activities for staff and their families through the University International Club (UIC). PhD House Activity Group The PhD House Activity Group is an interdisciplinary group of volunteer PhDs and postdocs that organises a wide range of social and academic events primarily aimed at both Danish and international PhDs and post docs. The group is working to enhance the junior researchers environment at Aarhus University and is always looking for new enthusiastic members. The PhD House The PhD House is located in the Dale T. Mortensen Building (International Centre). The PhD House offers a combination of administrative services, lecture rooms for PhD courses on transversal skills and Dale s Café offering quality coffee, sandwiches and a wide selection of beers. Furthermore, the PhD associations have the possibility to use the facilities in the PhD House for events. IC Dormitory for international PhD students is also part of the Dale T. Mortensen Building. The PhD House is, thus, a focal point for national and international PhD students to meet both professionally and socially. The International Centre AU International Centre is located in the Dale T. Mortensen Building (Høegh- Guldbergs Gade 4). Among others, it contains IAS and the housing department, which deals with housing matters for international students and staff.
