35 Will the 2020 target of 10% MPA coverage be achieved? MPAs in the Mediterranean Sea region accounted for 1.08% of its area in 2010 (Pelagos Sanctuary excluded), and grew up to 3.21% in 2015, most of the new designated MPAs being located in EU waters. The area to reach 10% is equal to marine Natura 2000 network designated over the last 20 years. > 4% It is thus unlikely that the 10% target will be achieved year in 2020 at the Mediterranean regional scale. Global It is highly possible that the growth in maritime trade sector activities and the increasing competition over space may slow down or even hinder the designation process of new MPAs.

48 Key questions Which are the key recommendations from the different sectors of the MPA community (MPAs managers, national authorities and regional organizations) to implement a sustainable Maritime Spatial Planning and Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Mediterranean? What are the economic sectors for which high environmental standards are required? What are the recommendations that marine conservation community needs to produce on this topic? How to guarantee a successful implementation of the ecosystem approach from the MPA perspective in GIZC and MSP processes?
