10 The challenges of complex systems engineering Can you build an aircraft with just one tool? If yes you are hired! Unfortunately it s not that easy! all-round tool So we need a set of tools! Today we have about different software tools in use (real figures are up to 1000) From office tools to management and actual engineering Can you use all the tools and build an aircraft alone? Unfortunately this is also not that easy! We need a lot of engineers who know how to use the different tools! 10

20 But what distinguishes the IBM Rational solutions today from other vendors? Tool features come and go what really matters is the foundation the tools are build on! Jazz solutions support open and common integration and interoperability - Important aspect in today s complex engineering environments! 20

21 The Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) A community of industrial users, tool providers and domain experts developing specifications on how to integration tools used in the product lifecycle Approach based on open and standard internet technologies How it s built: ALM and PLM Specifications based on a core specification The OSLC Core specifies the primary integration techniques for integrating lifecycle tools, such as communication protocols and basic data representation The OSLC domain workgroups specify additional vocabulary specific to their lifecycle domain, but do not add new protocols For further information see: 21

23 How to implement and deploy such a complex environment - Best Practises Identify purpose and scope of your activity Don t think tool or solution oriented Identify the Engineering disciplines which shall be involved Find supporters in this teams (call them local champions) The right people who apply and communicate it later! Get support from executive management Define a use case or scenario which represents your day-to-day engineering challenges Don t just put requirements together as they will not reflect your real needs! Expand the solution incrementally by providing additional use cases and user stories 23

24 Challenges which needs to be addressed by IBM Issues between different versions of the Jazz tools - Migration from one version to another - Integration and Interoperability to 3 rd Party tool providers No proprietary solutions please we need more collaboration between IBM and other major tool providers We need to make it more simple for not advanced people - Basic version of the tools should have minimum features advanced users may activate additional features - Customization of Jazz 24
