1 DESIGN STANDARDS Division 02 Existing Conditions- Site Work General I. This Division includes: A. Demolition B. Clearing and Grubbing C. Excavation, Backfill and Compaction D. Pavement Base E. Paving and Surfacing F. Fences and Grates G. Pedestrian Fence H. Bicycle Rack I. Landscaping II. Cribbing and Other Support During Excavation During construction, provide appropriate cribbing and/or other soil support method to assure a safe condition. III. Trench Engulfment Keep trenches pumped free from water. IV. Paving and Surfacing A. Bituminous Paving 1. Material used to be as per State of Ohio, Dept. of Transportation, Construction and Materials Specifications, with the exception aggregate, only, be used in asphalt concrete Design Specific I. Demolition A. Structural Removal 1. In open areas, foundations of structures shall be removed to a minimum of 3 feet below finish grade elevations. Where new structures will replace existing structures, indicate extent of foundation removal on the drawings. Existing building slabs, sidewalks, concrete walls and other subterranean structures to be removed before fill and/or new structure is to be placed B. Recycled and Salvaged Materials 1. All materials to be recycled or salvaged shall be clearly identified. Provide the following information: i. Existing location ii. Quantity iii. Method of removal iv. Protection of item and surrounding v. Disposition of items II. Clearing and Grubbing A. Protection of Trees 1. For general construction purposes, is to be done by fencing around the existing tree(s) using the tree s drip line as a guide. For construction that includes excavation work, a chain trencher (not a backhoe) is to be used to cut a trench a minimum of 36 deep around the tree, again using the drip line as a guide. B. Excavation within the Drip Line of Trees
2 III. 1. Any scheduled excavation which abuts the drip line (the area under the canopy or branches of the tree) is to be trenched first around the tree using the drip line as a guide. This is to be accomplished with a chain trencher (not a backhoe) cutting a 36 minimum deep trench. Consult University Maintenance Department if more than 30% of the root area is to be removed C. Uncovering of Existing Roots 1. All tree roots uncovered during the above trenching requirement or during other construction work that are 3 or greater in diameter are to be cut with a chain or hand saw Excavation, Backfill and Compaction A. Disposal of Excess 1. Excess fill material which is not required nor permitted as fill shall be removed from University property at the Contractor s expense B. All Excess Topsoil 1. All excess top soil shall remain the property of the University, and at the Contractor s expense, stockpiled at a construction site, or other site on the University s grounds, if deemed so by the University. Topsoil deemed unsuitable by the University is to be removed from University property at the Contractor s expense C. Compaction 1. Trenches shall be mechanically compacted in 6 lifts (maximum) 2. Grass areas (prior to installation of topsoil) shall be compacted to 95% D. Compaction Under Special Foundations, Isolated Pads, and Footings 1. Compact to 100% E. Foundation Backfill Under Planting Beds and Sod 1. The upper 2 feet of soil, below the topsoil, - 90% maximum. Remainder of backfill 95% if depth is less than 10 feet; - 100% if depth exceeds 10 feet F. Backfill Around Manholes and Other Underground Structures 1. 95% if depth is less than 10, 100% if depth is more than 10 G. Trench Backfill 1. Density of trench backfill shall be equal to densities specified for all other fill and backfill 2. For pipe trenches, excavate 4 below the intended bottom and provide a sand bedding, which extends halfway up the side of the pipe IV. Pavement Base A. Under Paved Pedestrian Walks and Courts 1. Compact to 95% B. Parking Areas 1. The top 1 foot of sub grade shall be compacted, in 6 lifts, to 102% of maximum dry density V. Paving and Surfacing A. Tar and Chip 1. The use of Tar and Chip (Chip and Seal) surfacing is not permitted for any parking lot, driveway, walkway, street or any other permanent facility B. Asphalt Sealer 1. When requested by the University, areas to be sealed to receive two (2) coats of coal tar emulsion conforming to the U.S. Air Force and Federal Specifications RP (GSA-FSS) C. Bituminous Walks 1. Bituminous walks shall be a full 2-inch compacted thickness of No. 404 on a 4-inch compacted thickness of No. 304 base. The base and the bituminous shall be compacted to 98% of their densities
3 VI. VI. D. Expansion Joints 1. Expansion joints in concrete walks shall be approximately every 30 E. Concrete Walks 1. Concrete walks shall be a full 4 1/2-inches thick (4,000 psi concrete) with #42, 6x6 welded wire fabric over 4-inches of No. 304 gravel base F. Concrete Mix 1. Concrete mix shall be ODOT Class C concrete with clean natural sand, limestone aggregate and 6% to 10% entrained air. Use of slag or slate is prohibited G. Curing Compounds 1. Curing compounds must be of non-staining type. Clear chlorinated rubber compounds are prohibited due to possible staining H. Base Drainage 1. Drainage trenches, over impervious sub base, filled with stone, through the earth berm, perpendicular to the edge of pavement, located at low points and at intervals of 100 or less I. Site Drainage 1. Turf areas should be designed with positive drainage at a minimum 3% slope Fences and Grates A. Chain Link Fence 1. Vinyl-clad Fence i. Vinyl-clad chain link fabric, framework, and fittings shall be as manufactured by Colorguard Fence Products, Inc., (trade name Colorbond II) or equal B. Wire Coating 1. Plasticized Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) with low temperature (-20 degrees C) plasticizer C. Stretches of Fence 1. Stretches of fence more than 500 feet in lengths is to have one intermediate 3 inch O.D. pull post with braces in two directions, for every 500 feet D. Fittings and other Appurtenances 1. Fittings and other appurtenances are to be aluminum alloy, galvanized pressed steel, malleable or castle steel; epoxy-phenolic primed and coated with matching vinyl (PVC) by the fusion-bond method. Painted fittings are not permitted E. Pipe Framework 1. Pipe framework to be Schedule 40 and high-yield vinyl-clad. Posts are not to be greater than 10 feet apart and set not less than 3 feet into the ground 2. Pipe Framework Sizes: i. Top Rail/Gates 1 5/8 ii. Line Post/Gates 2 iii. Line Post 2 ½ iv. Corner/End/Gate 3 v. Corner/End/Gate 4 vi. Gate Post 6 5/8 Pedestrian Fence A. Post Spacing 1. Spacing of posts are to be 8-0 o/c B. Post Height and Chain 1. Top of posts are to be 39 above grade, with chain fasteners placed 3 below top of post. Chain is to swag to 30 above grade C. Hardware Finish and Color 1. All hardware (except chain) including caps, clamps, posts and bolts shall receive a thermally bonded vinyl clad coating equal to or exceeding Colorbond II by Colorguard. Color to be Forest Green
4 VII. VIII. D. Post Finish 1. Posts are to be schedule 40 (vinyl clad), and chain is to be galvanized Proof Coil Bicycle Rack A. Non-moveable Racks 1. Are to be 3/8 x 1 ½ diameter formed steel with plastisol coating B. Moveable Racks 1. To be approved by the University Architect C. Location of Racks 1. To be placed on concrete pad Landscaping A. Landscape Plan 1. Landscape plan to be designed as part of overall construction project. It will be bid as an alternate or as an allowance. Design and cost are to be established in association with the University Representative (See Appendix C Landscape Guidelines) B. New Topsoil 1. New topsoil shall be obtained from local sources or areas having similar soil characteristics from naturally well drained sites. Topsoil is to be free of roots, weeds, debris, and stone of more than 1 in diameter C. Topsoil Compaction 1. Topsoil compaction to be by natural effects and normal working conditions. Topsoil is not to be compacted mechanically D. Seed Only 1. Seed only between February 15- May 20, or August 15- October 1 E. Grass Seed 1. Comply with following mix requirements i. 70% Finelawn 5 GL Fescue ii. 25% Manhattan II Rye or PHD Rye Blend iii. 5% Baron Kentucky Bluegrass F. Provide Sod Composed 1. Sod is to be principally of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis) 95% Construction Specific I. Excavation, Backfill and Compaction A. Pre-Excavation 1. Before beginning digging, notify University Project Manager to arrange for all utilities 2. Cut paved areas before excavation B. Soil Replacement 1. In certain cases where poor conditions exist, it may be necessary to excavate nonbearing or inconsistent soil and replace it with engineered fill C. Materials for Fill and Backfill 1. Grits are prohibited as backfill material 2. Where allowed, excavated material, free from large clods or stones are acceptable fill. Under paved or hard surfaces areas shall be backfilled with graded gravel (3/4 to fines) D. Site Damage 1. The Contractor shall, without compensation, repair any damage done during his excavation E. Topsoil
5 1. Topsoil compaction to be by natural effects and normal working conditions. Topsoil is not to be compacted mechanically II. III. Paving and Surfacing A. Repairs 1. Depressions and abutments to existing pavement shall be repaired by cutting out the surface to a minimum depth of 1 inch with vertical cuts, filling, and rolling the areas. Feathering of patches and abutments to existing pavement will not be permitted B. Curbs and Gutters 1. Curbs and gutters shall be non-reinforced combination curbs and gutters. Cast-inplace concrete shall be used unless other design is used to match existing conditions. Curbs and gutters to be formed and poured as a monolithic cast C. Drains in Sidewalks 1. Provide scupper, corner drains in locations where this is likelihood of regular drains being clogged with leaves Grading A. Notification of Final Grading 1. All final grading operations are to be reported to the University Project Manager, a minimum of 72 hours prior to commencement B. Sub-Grade Inspection 1. Prior to the placement of topsoil, the University is to inspect a sub-grade C. Approval of Methods 1. Methods of final grading and placement of topsoil are to be approved by the University
