1 WE HARVEST THE SUN IN HARMONY WITH NATURE
2 The sun gives light and creates life. In just one and a half hours the sun sends enough energy to the earth to cover the energy consumption of the whole world for a whole year. It makes good sense to harvest the world s largest energy source. Here efficient energy supply and environmental consideration are going hand in hand. GREEN ADVANTAGES Meadows and green field areas close to the cities are scarce, but yet to find. Maybe this used to be an industrial site, or heavy traffic is passing nearby? A solar installation can convert bare ground into an environmental and sustainable heating source for the city. And additionally the natural vegetation can be kept, and the area will transform into grazing land for sheep and other animal life. A solar heating installation may be situated several kilometres outside the city, and from there the energy can easily be transported to the households which are connected to the district heating station. Solar heating is the renewable energy source which takes up the smallest piece of land. The solar heating installation beats both photovoltaics, wind turbines, biomass, biogas and bioethanol when it comes to quantity of produced kwh per square kilometre. The environment will not be harmed. If the installation should be dismantled once in a distant future, the land will still be the same as before and the solar collectors can be put apart for recirculation. Denmark is known as a front runner for renewable energy and this is where Arcon-Sunmark is at home. Since 1974 Arcon-Sunmark has installed more than 1 million m2 solar collector area, and we are behind Europe s and even the world s largest solar heating plants. We have the necessary experience. 2 3
3 SOLAR HEATING ON THE BEAUTIFUL ISLAND OF ÆRØ Many tourists love the island of Ærø from holiday visits and vacations. The island has been admitted to the EU project 100 communities for 100% renewable energy. Solar heating installations from Arcon-Sunmark to a wide extent contribute to achieve the goal of self-sufficiency. Nature advisor Knud Nielsen says: Tourists and other visitors see Ærø as a beautiful island. Luckily, there need not be a conflict between nature conservation and production of alternative energy. The solar collectors do not jut up into the sky, and therefore, whenever required, a band of plants may act as a sight screen. On the isle of Ærø sheep are keeping the turf on the pasture so that the area produces a lot of heat and also supplies feed to the animals. This makes good sense all the way around. DRONNINGLUND S SOLAR HEATING PLANT IS SITUATED OUTSIDE TOWN In Dronninglund, Denmark, the inhabitants have half of their heating consumption covered by a solar heating installation from Arcon-Sunmark. It produces 18,000 MWh annually. Johan Frey, Production Manager, says: The plant is situated 3 kilometres outside the town. This works well and the transportation of the heat over a distance costs a heat loss of 1 degree only. In regard to the consideration of landscape and nature, before the installation some neighbours worried about the solar collectors reflecting light and others found them unsightly. This scepticism is all gone today. A green fence surrounds the installation and makes it merge with nature. We cut the grass 5-6 times in the summertime so that no shadow hits the collectors. The rest of the grass is left to go into bloom thereby generating a great biodiversity with lots of animal life. Johan Frey is Production Manager at Dronninglund District Heating station 4 5
4 THE SUN SUPPLIES CLEAN ENERGY The sun is the cleanest of all energy sources. The sun comes free of charge, it makes no noise, it does not smell and it leaves no residue. A solar heating installation converts sun rays into sustainable energy year after year. Therefore the world s best energy is yellow like the sun. Emission of CO2 is one of the biggest climatic problems of our time. A typical solar heating installation replaces fossil fuels and will reduce a district heating plant s CO2 emission by about 2 tons a year for each household it supplies. IT MAKES GOOD SENSE EACH AND EVERY DAY There are several good reasons to be happy when the sun comes out. Even when the costs for installation and equipment are included, large-scale solar heating provides the lowest possible energy costs. The price of fossil fuel energy is fluctuating, whereas all costs are known and fixed from the very beginning when a solar heating plant is implemented. The price of one MWh remains unchanged throughout the installation s lifetime of minimum 25 years. Solar heating is perfect in combination with all other energy sources. With an accumulation tank or a seasonal storage it is possible to store the heat and make up for temperature differences from day to night, and with a seasonal storage even from summer to winter. 6 7
