The Centre for Applied Genomics ( Dr. Dennis McCormac, Director Platform Development Presentation: Applied Genomics Translating genomics discoveries into clinical applications TCAG is advancing projects aimed at developing therapeutics and diagnostics for genetic diseases and disorders. The Centre is active in the identification of targets for drug and gene therapy, genetic variation in disease states, and profiling of populations with genetic diseases such as autism, cystic fibrosis, and certain forms of epilepsy and cancer. By understanding the genetic basis of disease, TCAG can compile vast databases of genetic information, such as the Database of Genomic Variants ( which has led to the development of genome-wide microarray technologies. The Centre for Applied Genomics (TCAG) is a research organization, led by world-renowned geneticist Dr.Steven Scherer, providing applied genomics technologies and services to companies and institutions in the bio/pharma field. TCAG is a core facility within the Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children, and is a Science and Technology Platform of Genome Canada. TCAG also houses vast databases of genetic information and applies advanced techniques in bioinformatics to specifically identify disease causes and potential therapeutic targets. 3

4 TCAG collaborates with multinational pharma companies and major research institutions on research and development programs for specific diseases and genetic therapies. The Centre provides services to over 1,100 laboratories worldwide in a variety of genomic and genetic disciplines, including health, biotechnology, agriculture and food sciences. TCAG also provides consultative resources related to genomics project design and implementation, access to high performance computing, bioinformatics support and data analysis. University of Alberta Metabolomics Platform (UAMP) ( Ian Forsythe, Program Manager Presentation: Metabolic Profiling Characterizing disease states for better therapeutic strategies. The University of Alberta is a world leader in human metabolomics and metabolic profiling. It is home to unique and internationally important databases and chemical libraries including DrugBank, DrugMet (the drug metabolite library), the Human Metabolome Database and the Human Metabolome Library. These resources, combined with nearly $7 million in state-of-the-art equipment and 20 specially trained personnel, allow the University of Alberta Metabolomics Platform (UAMP) to rapidly and inexpensively identify, quantify and contextualize thousands of metabolites or xenobiotics from almost any biological sample. This capacity is many times greater than any other commercial or academic facility in the world. ID Labs Biotechnology Inc. Since inception, PDI has conducted hundreds of successful biomarker discovery projects on a fee for service basis, in addition to growing its internal and collaborative research network. In late 2007, PDI incorporated a personalized metabolic health research and monitoring subsidiary, which will open its first research center in Saskatoon in VIDO (Vaccine & Infectious Disease Organization) ( Paul Hodgson The University of Saskatchewan s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) is a world leader in the research and development of vaccine and immunity-enhancing technologies for humans and animals. VIDO is a non-profit organization owned by the University of Saskatchewan and operates with support from the governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Government of Canada, industry competitive grants, and charitable foundations. In recent history, immunization has had a profound impact on saving lives, preventing an estimated two million deaths per year. Yet despite advances in available technology, vaccine delivery techniques have not greatly improved, leaving some populations inadequately protected. VIDO is developing novel vaccine formulation and delivery systems including powerful, naturallyderived vaccine additives and needle-free methods. Much of this work is applicable across species and diseases. In an interdisciplinary environment, VIDO is working to improve the health of humans and animals, and reduce suffering caused by diseases like influenza and hepatitis C, and by the lack of effective vaccines for newborns and populations in developing countries.
