Protecting people companies environment Our Journey From environmental responsibility to long term sustainability. Pittsburgh Corning
Pittsburgh Corning and Responsible Sustainability ENERGY, a necessary component in the world we live. Sustaining our current life styles will require an on-going effort to conserve energy and reduce the consumption of natural resources. This is essential in preserving our existing resources long-term, thus sustaining our future energy supplies. One way to accomplish this is through the design and engineering process. From commercial buildings to power plants, from homes to factories, the efficient use of our energy is now a global initiative. Pittsburgh Corning pledges to: Keep environmental concerns an integral part of any business planning or operating decision making process. Operate its facilities in such a manner as to minimize the environmental impact on natural resources and to provide the training, management systems and resources necessary to do so. Mitigate or restore any adverse environmental impact caused by our operations. Maintain open communication regarding environmental issues with employees, government agencies, public officials and residents of the communities in which we operate. Work to continually improve our Environmental Management Program by establishing objectives and standards against which we will track our performance using audits and assessments. Ensure the proper handling and disposal of waste materials, minimize their creation and pursue opportunities to recycle and reuse waste materials. Identify hazardous substances and manage them effectively to ensure their safe handling, movement, storage, reuse or disposal. Identify, monitor and control air emissions of volatile organic chemicals, ozone depleting chemicals and combustion by-products generated from our facilities. Conduct environmental reviews for new products, processes and materials to confirm regulatory compliance, assess environmental impact and consider energy efficiency.
Commercial and Industrial Development Sustainable design and engineering are at the forefront of commercial and industrial development. Countries and cities worldwide have embraced programs such as LEED in North America and BREEAM in the U.K. that promote green facility design. As a result, the demand for products that contribute to sustainable design strategies, with low environmental impact, continues to grow. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, residential and commercial facilities account for almost 39 percent of total U.S. energy consumption and 38 percent of U.S. carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions 1. In 2007, 32% of that energy was used to create a comfortable indoor environment through mechanical heating and cooling 2. Improving the efficiency of mechanical heating and cooling systems, has a significant impact on the reduction of energy used. How is this done? The Whole Building Design Guide 3 offers numerous strategies for energy reduction in buildings. One of the most effective ways of reducing energy consumption in commercial and industrial facilities is the proper use of insulation. 1 Pew Center Building Envelope Fact Sheet. Climate Tech Book. 4 FOAMGLAS Insulation is Part of the Solution Because it s Made from Natural Materials Sand is considered one of this planet s most abundant natural resources with large deposits constantly generated by numerous geologic conditions. These deposits renew annually from mountain and glacial runoff, moving large amounts of sand to rivers and oceans. North America alone generates sand deposits totaling nearly two billion tons annually a much greater amount than is used for producing glass. Because of the widespread availability of raw materials, as much as 75% (by weight) of the raw materials used to make FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation come from within 500 miles of our manufacturing facility. Sand, recycled glass and other natural and abundant materials are all that is required to produce Pittsburgh Corning FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation. These raw materials are mixed together to produce molten glass. The glass is then ground into a fine powder and put into molds. It passes through a cellulating oven and heated, where a natural reaction causes the powdered glass to rise, producing a glass block with millions of hermetically sealed glass cells. It is these cells that give FOAMGLAS insulation its superior strength, moisture resistance, and thermal performance. FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation does not contain organic compounds, oil or oil by products and no toxic or flammable materials.
Manufacturing Efficiency and Performance FOAMGLAS insulation manufacturing facilities constantly strive to improve efficiency and performance. Waste heat is captured and reused. Water to cool equipment is recycled and re-circulated. Glass scraps and/or post consumer/ industrial glass is diverted from landfills and recycled for feedstock in production. Materials such as cardboard for packaging and scrap metals from production are also recycled. Continuous process improvement and recycling efforts have significantly reduced waste and energy consumption in the manufacturing of FOAMGLAS insulation. FOAMGLAS insulation manufacturing facilities use LEAN processes to eliminate waste. They meet strict U.S. and European requirements with respect to emissions from production. Including: compliance with the U.S. Clean Water Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the Environmental Planning and Community Right-to-know Act, and the Toxic Substances Control Act. FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation is a manufactured ISO 9001 product and is a non-combustible insulation and has no contribution to fire or toxic off-gassing. Current global manufacturing locations: Sedalia, Missouri Fresno, Texas Tessenderlo, Belgium Schmiedefeld, Germany Klášterec nad Ohri, Czech Republic
Industrial and Mechanical Applications Because of the unique characteristics of FOAMGLAS insulation, it is a preferred product in industrial and mechanical applications such as piping, tank storage and vessels, and is ideal in a wide range of temperatures. Using Pittsburgh Corning FOAMGLAS to insulate mechanical and industrial applications can save thousands of times the amount of energy that is actually used to produce FOAMGLAS insulation. This makes insulation a key contributor in reducing energy usage and consumption.
Building Applications Improved insulation is a key element in a superior building envelope. FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation is manufactured without the use of blowing agents and is free of CFC s, HFC s and HCFC s. One of the oldest and most effective ways of maximizing the use of energy is the use of insulation. Whether applied in the building envelope or other mechanical applications, insulation is one of the most cost effective means to reducing energy usage.
Superior Indoor Air Quality Mold, in heating and air conditioning insulation systems, is a primary concern with indoor air quality. Mold requires a food source and moisture to grow and propagate. The best strategies to eliminate mold is to focus on eliminating food sources and moisture control. A food source can be internal or external to insulation in a heating and air conditioning system. The EPA recommends not using materials containing cellulose in the insulation system. FOAMGLAS insulation contains no cellulose or other known food sources. More important to avoid mold is to control moisture. FOAMGLAS insulation has a permeability of 0.00 Perm-Inch (the lowest of any insulation tested). It will not lose insulating value in the presence of moisture. Other common mechanical insulations can rapidly lose their insulating properties when subject to moisture. They include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short-and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOC s are generally ten times higher indoors than outdoors. VOC s are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides and building materials. FOAMGLAS insulation has no chemical additives and zero VOC content. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC s) can also have a significant impact on indoor air quality based on the type of insulation materials used on a heating and air conditioning system. VOC s are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids.
LEED and FOAMGLAS Cellular Glass Insulation LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO 2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. LEED is flexible enough to apply to all building types commercial as well as residential. It works throughout the building lifecycle design and construction, operations and maintenance, tenant fitout and significant retrofit. And, LEED for commercial development extends the benefits beyond the building footprint into the community it serves. FOAMGLAS Insulation can contribute toward earning LEED points on a project. While no one product or material alone can earn LEED credit points, FOAMGLAS Insulation can be used as part of a strategy to earn points in several credit categories.
Sustainable Sites vegetated roof LEED-NC Credit 6 storm water management LEED-NC Credit 7.1 roof heat island effect FOAMGLAS insulation can be part of a vegetated roof design which is one sustainable strategy that can be used to earn both of these Sustainable Sites credits. Energy & Atmosphere energy performance and refrigerant management LEED-NC Prerequisite 2 minimum energy performance LEED-NC Credit 1 - Optimize energy performance In the LEED rating system, up to 19 points can be awarded for improved energy efficiency. FOAMGLAS insulation can be used as part of strategies to help achieve the required energy performance and to further reduce the amount of energy consumed. LEED-NC Credits 4.1 and 4.2 recycled content FOAMGLAS insulation that incorporates post consumer recycled materials can be included in this calculation of the total recycled content in all building materials. Materials & Resources recyclable, recycled content and regional material LEED-NC Credits 2.1 and 2.2 construction waste management FOAMGLAS insulation scrap waste can be recycled. LEED-NC Credit 4 enhanced refrigerant management LEED-NC Credits 5.1 and 5.2 regional materials nearly 75% (by weight) of raw materials used to make FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation come from within 500 miles of our manufacturing facility. Indoor Environmental Quality low-emitting materials LEED-NC Credit 4 low-emitting materials Though insulation is not considered in this section, FOAMGLAS insulation would also eliminate another potential source of VOC s in a building. Low-VOC sealants and adhesives sold by Pittsburgh Corning could be used as part of this strategy. Pittsburgh Corning FOAMGLAS insulation is committed to conducting its business in an environmentally responsible manner that protects the public, its employees, and our country s natural resources.
