"Post-2015, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Private Sector EU DEVCO Infopoint, 4 November 2015, Brussels UNIDO Industrial Resource Efficiency Unit

UN Agenda 2030 Challenges Potentials

29 October Industry in 2030 Growing recognition of the important role of industry in accelerating in sustainable and inclusive manner - economic growth and social development. Raise industry s share in employment and gross domestic product, by 2030, and double its share in least developed countries Upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes.

The Challenge Resource use increased twice the rate of population growth Raw material input from industry is returned to the environment as waste within one year Production and consumption are moving to developing, transition economies By billion new mid class consumers will be added to the present 1.8 billion

5 Decoupling Decoupling of Growth from Natural Resource Consumption and Negative Environmental Impacts Resource decoupling Human well-being Economic activity (GDP) Impact decoupling Resource use Environmental impact Time Source: International Resource Panel, Decoupling Natural Resource Use and Environmental Impacts from Economic Growth, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Nairobi, 2011

7 The UNIDO Industrial Resource Efficiency Programme

Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) Increase productivity Reduce emissions and the use of natural resources 20 YEARS OF RECP celebrated in October 2015, under the umbrella of the Global RECPnet Conference and the World Resources Forum in Davos, Switzerland Improve the well-being of workers and communities

The Global RECP Network The network currently has over 70 members delivering RECP services in over 60 developing countries. Through RECPnet, knowledge and know-how is exchanged and North-South and South-South cooperation is promoted. Supported in cooperation with UNEP

EaP GREEN Program Greening Economies in the European Union's Eastern Neighbourhood Partnership for Environment and Growth Donor: European Commission Countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova & Ukraine Duration:

Programme Components COMPONENT 1: GOVERNANCE AND FINANCING TOOLS Mainstream sustainable consumption and production into national development strategies COMPONENT 2: USE OF SEA AND EIA AS PLANNING TOOLS Promote the use of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) COMPONENT 3: DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS IN SUPPORT OF CORPORATE ACTION Apply sustainable consumption and production practices in selected economic sectors (agriculture and manufacturing) OVERALL OBJECTIVE Enable countries of Eastern Partnership to move towards a green economy

Activities and Achievements Capacity Development Implementation and dissemination of RECP Technology Support Achievements 47 national experts trained RECP Primers developed in national language Teams established & service units contracted in each country to support project activities Detailed RECP Assessments in 40 SMEs RECP clubs ongoing in 2 municipalities per country Assessment of RECP monitoring equipment needs National roundtable on financing for RECP investment held in Georgia, jointly with DBA Future Another 70 national experts will be trained Detailed business plans for the institutionalization of RECP support mechanisms will be developed Advanced assessments in 15 companies Approximately 300 SMEs conduct assessments through RECP Clubs Opportunities for the adaptation and adoption of cleaner technologies Pilot projects demonstrating the potential of industry modernization and adoption of BAT/BEP

UNIDO Innovative Chemicals Management Policy framework and scientific support Innovative Chemicals Management Innovative Technology Solutions Innovative Business Models Green Chemistry Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production

Innovative Chemicals Management - Results 23 company assessments finalized in different sub-sectors in Colombia, Egypt, El Salvador, Morocco and Peru and respective case studies developed Toolkit and three technical manuals developed for application of paints; formulation of paints and wet processing in textiles Toolkit to be integrated in IOMC toolbox for SAICM (Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management) implementation

Case: Upgrading Waste By-product Company: Alico, Colombia Products: flexible packaging products for food industry Problems: 1) 2K ink printing requires solvent for cleaning of machines and parts 2) Distillation recovered some solvent but significant waste generated 3) > 55 t/year waste sludge Innovative Solution Analysis of properties of the sludge and find potential markets & customers for the waste Modification of the distillation process in a way that sludge meets requirements to be used for coating wood products (solvent recovery) Benefits Turned a cost burden into a revenue-generating product Reduced chemical waste by 100% 42,000 USD/year savings

Chemical Leasing Sustainable Chemicals Service Solutions Shifts the focus from increasing sales volume towards a value-added and functional based approach UNIDO Global Chemical Leasing Programme initiated in 2004 Capacity Building and Demonstrations International multi-stakeholder working group Global Award Business model & policy instrument for sustainable chemistry
