Industrial Applications MEE condensate treatment for Pharma and Chemical Industries. Pharmaceutical Effluent ( Formulation & API) Chemical Research Organizations (CRO s), Biotech companies Petrochemicals, & Pesticides Sugar Effluents& CPU s Textile, Dyestuff and Dye intermediates and many more 7

Zero Liquid Discharge: Approach Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) approach involves a series of processes (like membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, evaporation and crystallization) that extract pure water from industrial effluents, leaving behind sludge, dissolved solids, suspended particles and salt crystals Pre-requisite for ZLD needs physical and chemical treatment and followed by biological system to remove organic load. The treated effluents can be subjected for concentration and evaporation. The concentration method quite often involves the adoption of Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Nano Filtration (NF) methods. The evaporation methods involve incineration/drying/ evaporation of effluent in multi effect evaporators (MEE)

ZLD : Myth or Reality for MEE condensate

Problems related to ZLD While the benefits of ZLD are significant, adoption of the technology has two key environmental considerations: Energy consumption for the evaporation process Disposal of the solid waste. The energy cost for evaporation accounts for over 90% of the operational expenses of ZLD There is also the issue of dealing with the highly toxic rejects of a ZLD plant. Presently in Tamil Nadu, there are designated landfill zones (away from the industrial centers) for disposal of the sludge. This increase the cost for the manufacturers because they have to store the sludge (often for up to a year) before transporting it to far off locations, Problem arises with MEE condensate with low boiling point organics mostly industrial solvents with low BOD/COD ratio, making it difficult with conventional biological treatment

SBT Layout

Scientific principle for SBT Chemical Oxidation: Combination of Advance oxidation process breaks down the complex molecules in the simpler form and subsequently, facilitates adsorption in SBT system as well as biodegradation Adsorption: The molecules gets adsorbed in the filter due to adsorptive properties of the filter media. Filtration: Chemical and hydraulic properties of the filter media helps in the adsorption of organic molecules and drains the fluid. The hydraulic loading carefully selected helps in the retention time of the fluid in the filter bed required for effective solid-liquid contact for adsorption. Biodegradation: Filter media which houses filter material, culture & catalyst helps in biodegradation of the adsorbed organic molecules which is essential for adsorptive site rejuvenation. Range of microfloraensures the microbial diversity required for degradation of various contaminants. It siprimarily aerobic oxidation coupled with some anaerobic pockets in the filter bed. Oxygen supply is ensured by catalytic oxygen supply as well by means of surface diffusion of atmospheric oxygen.

USP s of SBT system as against ETP Handles recalcitrant COD Work for BOD/COD less than 10% Effective against many non degradable molecules without addition of external carbon and nutrient Does not require frequent acclimatization period Effective against fluctuating chemical composition of wastewater such as Pharma-API, Biotech companies, CRO s etc. Low Maintenance cost No chemical suldge Odour - free Low energy requirement and Green environment are its unique features. 14

SUCCESS STORIES

CASE Study: Anupam Rasayan India Pvt. Ltd. (Surat) Gujarat Surat

Background of the Project AnupamRasayan is a manufacturer of Specialty Chemicals, with products catering to a plethora of market segments such as Agrochemicals, Anti- Bacterial, Polymers, Pharmaceuticals, Material Sciences etc. Product chemistry is majorly based on Phenol Derivatives. Major Constraints of their effluent was to treat Phenolic compounds, Before installing SBT they were facing lots of problem of degradation of Phenol as well as of very high cost of O&M in terms of Energy & Chemicals. After Installing SBT their Energy cost of treatment of effluent cut down by 1/10 with Phenol degradation of >90%.
