4 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 3 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE UNIT 1: DESIGN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT LEARNER ASSIGNMENT BRIEF APPLIED PURPOSE (AIMS) The purpose of this assessment is to help candidates understand and appreciate the processes of design and planning, the provision of primary service utilities and the impact of health and safety in the context of a potential construction project. Client WJ (Joinery) Limited Background and aspirations WJ (Joinery) Limited grew from William James hobby of turning and working with wood. Beginning with a lathe and workbench in an out-building of his grade II listed country house, William would make items of furniture for his own use and then for friends and family. The hobby soon became a full-time business run from the house and using an adjacent converted barn as a work shop. The business has enjoyed year on year growth and today employs 15 local craftsmen. It specialises in the supply of bespoke joinery items for refurbishment and high end new build projects, including doors, mouldings and staircases to traditional designs, all made from seasoned hardwoods obtained from sustainable sources. The business is at a critical stage. Order books are full and demand continues to grow. Staffing levels could be doubled, but the workshop is too small and lacks modern facilities. The business aspirations include an ambition to become a market leader in their specialised field; to promote traditional design and the use of sustainable materials; and to hand on the skills and knowledge of their craftsmen via in house training schemes. BRIEF Your brief is to assist WJ (Joinery) Limited in the achievement of their aspirations: Key project outcomes Core building requirements Modernisation of production process, leading to increased productivity. Showroom, demonstration facility to increase sales. Modernisation of staff facilities to comply with legislation and improve motivation. Office accommodation similar to the existing Showroom Doubling of production space, Separate materials storage, quality control, despatch areas. Staff restroom and new sanitary accommodation.

11 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 10 ASSESSOR INFORMATION WJEC Approach to Assessment Unit 1: Design the Built Environment is internally assessed and externally moderated. The following principles apply to the assessment of each unit: All units are assessed through summative controlled assessment. Details of controls for this unit are provided in this model assignment. All assessment criteria must be met under controlled conditions, as specified in this model assignment, for the unit learning outcomes to be achieved. WJEC Level 3 Applied Diploma in Professional Construction Practice has adopted the principles of controlled assessment as set out in the Joint Council for Qualifications document GCSE, GCE, ELC, Functional skills, Principal learning in the Diploma and Project Qualifications instructions for conducting coursework. This document can be accessed through the JCQ website ( Each centre must ensure that internal assessment is conducted in accordance with these controls. There are three stages of assessment that will be controlled: Task setting Task taking Task marking Task setting WJEC have produced this model assignment for the assessment of this unit. Centres are, however, allowed to modify the assignment, as outlined in the Accepted changes to assignments section of this model assignment. This will allow centres to tailor the assessment to local needs. This model assignment has been written to ensure the following controls are in place: Each unit is assessed through one assignment. Each assignment must have a brief that sets out an applied purpose. An applied purpose is a reason for completing the tasks that would benefit a business or scientific investigation. The assignment can specify a number of tasks but tasks must be coherent i.e. show how the assessment requirements all contribute to the achievement of the applied purpose of the assignment. The assignment must provide each candidate with the opportunity to address all assessment criteria and all the marks available. The assignment must indicate the acceptable forms of evidence. Where a centre has adapted the model assignment, there must be evidence of quality-assuring its fitness for purpose. Sample documentation for this activity is provided with each model assignment.

12 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 11 How the learner assignment brief meets these controls This is a single assignment that addresses all assessment criteria for this unit. There is a clear applied purpose. The context for the task is fictitious although it has been developed in conjunction with industry representatives to ensure it is credible and appropriate for the level. The assignment brief provides learners with opportunities to engage with real employers. All tasks are coherently related to the applied purpose. The summary table makes clear the evidence requirements. Task taking There are five areas of task taking that are controlled: time, resources, supervision, collaboration and resubmission. Time Time has limited control. There are 20 hours available for assessment of this unit. The learner assignment brief suggests how this time can be allocated. The allocation of the 20 hours is based on the assumption that significant work has been undertaken in advance which will help inform the final evidence. Resources Resources has limited control. The assignment makes clear the type of resources that learners must have access to. Learners can have access to class notes (including electronic files and documents), their research (including electronic files and documents), text books and the specified documents provided they may be allowed access to the Internet for any tasks where it is deemed essential. Supervision Supervision has medium control. Learners must be supervised by an assessor whilst completing tasks. Centres must have in place systems to ensure learners cannot access evidence they have been developing outside of supervised activities. Authentication Supervision is in place to ensure the authenticity of evidence produced for summative assessment. Assessors are not expected to provide input or guidance to learners during the controlled assessment time. This includes providing formative feedback on the evidence being produced. Assessors can provide guidance on the requirements of the task and remind learners of the mark bands and how they can be interpreted. Assessors must intervene where there is a health and safety hazard observed. Candidates can review and redraft evidence independently within the time controls for the assessment. Candidates cannot redraft based on feedback from an assessor. Learners must sign the declaration in this model assignment to confirm that all evidence submitted for moderation is their own work and that any sources used have been acknowledged. Assessors must sign the declaration in this model assignment to confirm that evidence submitted for moderation was completed under the controlled conditions set out in the model assignments.

13 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 12 Collaboration Collaboration refers to group work and has limited control. For this model assignment group work is not allowed. Task marking All marking of evidence must be made against the mark bands given in each unit of the specification. Marked evidence must comply with the controlled requirements set out in this model assignment. Written evidence must be annotated to show how it relates to the assessment criteria and mark band requirements. Marking should only be undertaken by a designated assessor. An assessor should have appropriate expertise in the subject and level for a specified unit. The assessor is responsible for ensuring that: Assessment is conducted under specified controlled conditions They are clear of the requirements of the learning outcomes, assessment criteria and mark bands prior to commencing controlled assessment Evidence presented for assessment is authentic Assessment decisions are accurately recorded Evidence is appropriately annotated Observation records contain sufficient detail for objective corroboration of decisions Judgements are only made against the assessment criteria and mark bands

14 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 13 Assignment Brief (Task setting) Type of evidence ACCEPTED CHANGES TO THIS MODEL ASSIGNMENT For this assignment, the type of evidence is specified in the assessment summary. Tasks Only references to the context of the assignment brief can be changed in the tasks. Purpose It is anticipate that there will be no significant variation in the applied purpose. Context The context must be realistic and credible but can be fictitious. There must be reference to a construction organisation. The brief must be written to address the same criteria as the model assignment and additional resources should be provided. Both the adapted scenario and resources should provide a similar level of demand to that of this model assignment. How Assessment is Managed (Task taking) Time The time suggested for each task, as set out in the learner assignment brief, takes account of the contribution of the task to the overall assessment requirements. There can be no changes to the total time available for controlled assessment, as set out in this model assignment. Centres can, however, amend the suggested time available for each task. Resources Learners must have access to an assessment grid. Details of essential resources are provided in the Summary table of the Learner Assignment Brief and the task-taking: resource section of this Assessor Guidance. There can be no changes to these. Collaboration Group work is not allowed for this unit Supervision No changes are allowed Feedback No changes are allowed

BRIEF Gillsbury House A refurbishment project to provide head office accommodation at Gillsbury House for AltGreen Energy Solutions plc, a company which specialises in the design and implementation of efficient and environmentally friendly energy generation systems. The brief requires a highly sustainable workplace designed to achieve the BREEAM Excellent standard for refurbishment projects. Gillsbury House is a city centre development located on a prominent corner site. It is owned by Parkwood Property Holdings Ltd and is currently vacant. Project introduction The five-storey Gillsbury House was constructed in the 1980s and is energy inefficient with high operating costs. The directors and employees of AltGreen Energy Solutions plc want to work in a building that lives up to the company s green aspirations. AltGreen has agreed terms for a 15-year lease to occupy the upper three floors of the refurbished building, which will provide them with a total of approximately 2250 m 2 of office space. The building owners have set a budget of 7m and a construction period of 32 weeks for the project. The refurbishment work is to include the installation of new heating, lighting, ventilation and energy management systems, with raised floors and new suspended ceilings throughout the office space. AltGreen are to be responsible for their own internal fit-out of floors 3, 4 and 5. Floor 2 is to be left open-plan and offered for rent. The retail units on the ground floor (floor 1) are to have new shopfronts and are also to be offered for rent, on a shell only basis. Floor 1 is also to include a fully fitted reception suite, adjacent to the existing toilet facilities, lifts and main staircase. The reception area is to serve the office accommodation and be completed to a high standard of interior design. The existing toilet facilities, lifts and the main staircase are to be refurbished. A typical floor plan of Gillsbury House is included as figure 1.

42 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 41 The building includes a basement (floor 0) car park and is a typical framed structure of the period with flat roof, concrete floors, brick/block cladding and aluminium framed double glazing. The envelope will require a considerable upgrade if the project is to meet the target C EPC rating.

51 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 50 ASSESSOR INFORMATION WJEC Approach to Assessment Unit 4: BIM and construction projects is internally assessed and externally moderated.

52 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 51 How the learner assignment brief meets these controls This is a single assignment that addresses all assessment criteria for this unit. There are 40 hours available for assessment of this unit. The learner assignment brief suggests how this time can be allocated. The allocation of the 40 hours is based on the assumption that significant work has been undertaken in advance which will help inform the final evidence.

53 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 52 Collaboration Collaboration refers to group work and has limited control.

54 APPLIED DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE isam 53 Assignment Brief (Task setting) Type of evidence ACCEPTED CHANGES TO THIS MODEL ASSIGNMENT For this assignment, the type of evidence is specified in the assessment summary.
