1 Executive Director of Advancement ORGANIZATION As Canada s largest and most influential faculty of education, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto occupies a unique place in the educational landscape. OISE is recognized at home and around the world as a leader in initial and continuing teacher education, graduate programs in education, and cutting edge educational research. There has never been a time in the history of the world when education has been more important to more people than it is today. Around the globe, individuals, communities, and nations increasingly look to education to strengthen and sustain their cultural, linguistic, social, and economic development. And while education does not guarantee equity or a successful life, it is a letter of introduction a golden ticket and without it today, most don t have a chance. Standing on the shoulders of one of the world s greatest universities the University of Toronto and mindful of their special responsibility to lead, OISE is united by the shared understanding of what and how they will each contribute to shape the world of education. OISE is at a special moment in its history. Under the leadership of a new Dean, Julia O'Sullivan, the faculty is setting new directions, positioning for the future with a new strategic plan, new leadership team, and transitioning to a new departmental structure. With over 80,000 alumni, a strong base of potential donors, and a focus on one of Canada and the world's most important priorities, education, the advancement team at OISE, under the leadership of the new Executive Director of Advancement, has a critical mandate to help OISE keeps its place as a leader in the national and international world of education. 1 Page

2 OPPORTUNITY The Executive Director of Advancement has the opportunity to be a pivotal player in helping OISE realize their new vision for education at home and abroad. For advancement professionals who derive satisfaction from building a thriving advancement office that will have impact for years to come while being part of University of Toronto's $2B Boundless Campaign, this is a great opportunity. POSITION Position Mandate Reporting to the Dean, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, with a dotted-line to the Division of University Advancement, the Executive Director of Advancement provides the strategic vision and leadership to the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive advancement program that includes all fundraising (major gifts, gift planning and annual and leadership giving), alumni relations and communications related to those activities for the Faculty. Responsibilities Fundraising Develop and implement a strategic, integrated development plan to secure significant external support to effect permanent improvement in the level of longterm and annual support. Develop a culture of philanthropy among all key stakeholders. In collaboration with the Dean, develop the Faculty s list of Funding Priorities. Provide strategic direction for and implementation of OISE s fundraising campaign within the context of the University s $2B Boundless campaign. Define goals and desired outcomes for fundraising programs, identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors, and effectively steward all donors. Initiate and build relationships with donors and potential donors and develops and cultivates those relationships and commitments to be translated into financial and volunteer support. Identify and recruit appropriate volunteers to serve on OISE s campaign cabinet or in other volunteer capacity. Develop and maintain an effective stewardship, recognition and communications program for all supporters. 2 Page

3 Alumni Relations Develop strategies that will help build the Faculty s relationships with its alumni for the purpose of strengthening group s potential as active financial supporters and volunteers and further develop the alumni cohort as goodwill ambassadors, an effective lobbying group for specific issues, recruitment of students and general community relations. Oversee the development of new initiatives and strengthening of existing initiatives to enhance alumni relations, in particular with younger alumni. Oversee the organization of annual alumni events and fundraising campaigns. Communications Provide leadership in the design and development of a comprehensive marketing and communications program for the advancement function (including alumni relations) which will enhance the image, visibility and reputation of the Faculty at the University as well as locally, nationally and internationally. Has overall responsibility for all print, web and communications for the purpose of advancing fundraising activities. Human Resource & Administration Create a human resource strategy to meet the strategic objectives of advancement at OISE. Prepare and present the annual advancement budget. Oversee the use of the University s computer networks and databases as well as prospect management, co-ordination, donations management, donor recognition and acknowledgement programs. Other Duties Raise the profile of OISE both within the University community and outside of the University by providing input to the Dean and Associate Deans in the development and implementation of an external relations strategy. Serves as an ex-officio member of the OISE Alumni Association and the Dean s Advisory Board. Participates in advancement meetings and committees, on Faculty Council and executive committees and working groups as assigned by the Dean. 3 Page

4 Experience Minimum eight years experience fundraising with a proven track record of success increasing revenue. Experience working in a large, complex organization, managing multiple stakeholders and decision makers. Has developed and implemented an integrated advancement strategic plan, achieving buy-in and commitment from a large number of diverse stakeholders. Demonstrated major gift development experience, both corporate and individual. A track record working with organizational leadership to set fundraising priorities and compelling cases for support. Experience managing a team of staff with varying functional responsibilities. Setting expectations for advancement goals that are deliverable while meeting the funding needs of an organization. University and alumni experience an asset. Skills Possesses considerable initiative, creativity, and determination to solicit significant funding support from alumni and other benefactors. Superior oral and written communication skills. Is able to influence, inspire, and engage key stakeholders in a variety of communication mediums. Strong organizational and analytical skills. The ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously and to assess relative priorities to complete tasks. Is able to take into account not only the short-term needs of the Faculty, but also its long-term objectives. Possesses a high degree political acumen, tact, and diplomacy. Proven ability to motivate and manage others. Is able to build highly productive and successful relationships with a large number of constituents. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, under pressure in a hectic and results oriented environment. 4 Page

5 An deep understanding of the role and impact of technology on future advancement initiatives. Has the unique skill of being able to think big picture strategy while still being detailed oriented with regard to the result. Understands how to work for a senior leader with limited time and resources. Knows how to present plans, ideas, and strategies in a concise and effective manner. Personal Characteristics Outgoing, energetic, positive, dynamic, ambitious. Assertive, confident, resilient, competent, respectful. Creative, innovative, thoughtful. Presents professionally. Passionate about education. Education: University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation an asset.
